Ralph Stanley was born into a musical family near McClure, Virginia, in 1927. He and his older brother began singing mountain ballads and learning to play the banjo from their mother. After graduating and returning from the Army, Ralph and Carter built quite the following in a six-state area, performing live and recording music, which was featured on radio station WCYB. Later, Ralph would record with the Clinch Mountain Boys, and he would go on to receive multiple Grammy Awards, be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame. And in 2006, he would be awarded the National Medal of Arts. Ralph Stanley passed away in 2016 at the age of 89. On this Prairie Home show, he sings the song “O, Death,” which was featured in the 2000 film O, Brother Where Art Thou?
During a New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Bob Dylan was asked what he thought of BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet. Dylan replied, “That's my kind of music!” Lots of folks could say the same. The band — Michael Doucet, David Doucet, Billy Ware, Tommy Alesi, Jimmy Breaux and Mitch Reed — has spent almost 50 years dedicated to preserving the Cajun style and blending elements of zydeco, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, and more into a tasty musical mix.
Spencer Bohren was born on April 5, 1950, in the wind-swept town of Casper, Wyoming, and passed on June 8, 2019, in his adopted home of New Orleans. He leaves behind two legacies: a fifty-five year career as a world-traveling solo musician; and the family he and his wife, Marilyn, built over their forty-two year marriage. In his music, Spencer accompanied his expressive singing voice with blues- and folk-based guitar and lap steel over thousands of live performances and 20 solo albums.

A Mardi Gras and Louisiana-themed show with Beau Soleil and Spencer Bohren, plus Ralph Stanley. It seems like just yesterday that Spencer and Ralph Stanley passed away. I remember seeing Dr. Stanley at MerleFest one of the first times I attended, then another time when he was with the family band and pondering whether he would retire, then another time when IIRC, he was on APHC and performed at MerleFest, both the same weekend.

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Spencer Bohren is from Wyoming but is often associated with the Crescent City, as he lived there for a number of years and continues to prove a popular club attraction there. Brought up in a strict Baptist family, Bohren sang harmonies in church, and it was his passion for gospel music that led him to become an equally diligent student of blues. He left Wyoming in 1968 for the folk scene around Denver. At the Denver Folklore Center and in coffeehouses, he learned acoustic folk-blues firsthand from people like the Rev. Gary Davis before moving to Seattle, where he played with a series of blues bands and continued to hone his songwriting abilities. In 1973, he moved back to Colorado to play with folk-blues singer Judy Roderick, and after talking extensively with Dr. John one night, he decided to move to New Orleans, where Dr. John was born and raised. Bohren spent a decade there, playing clubs like Tipitina's and the Absinthe Bar. In 1983, Bohren and his family began a seven-year journey on the road in an Airstream RV; Bohren performed all over the U.S., and later began to tour extensively in Europe and Japan. In 1989, Bohren had a Top 40 hit in Sweden. Although his discography is quite extensive and Bohren has been presented at many large festivals around the U.S. and Europe, a major-label deal in the U.S. still eludes him. Bohren's albums include Born in Biscayne (1984) for Great Southern Records, Down in Mississippi (1986) for New Blues Records, 1989's Live in New Orleans for Great Southern Records, Snap Your Fingers for Loft Records (a French label), and Totta & Hot ‘n' Tots (a Swedish group featuring Bohren); Spencer Bohren for Alpha Records of Japan in 1991, Full Moon for Virgin Records of France in 1992, and Present Tense for Loft Records in France, a 1995 release. His most recent recordings on U.S. labels include Vintage, a 1994 release for New Blues of New Orleans, and Dirt Roads, a 1996 release on his own Zephyr label out of Caspar, WY.

I'm tired, but feeling much better; last Saturday was the day after my surgery in Seattle, so I was tired, probably dud sleep through the whole show. Good news - the surgical pathology all came back benign.

Some of my high school classmates still live in NOLA, though many of us moved away - college and jobs elsewhere.
It's a great city, lots of fun but the best time to go is the weekend before the weekend before Mardi Gras - the parades have started but tourists still light so you can still get reservations at the good restaurants and the hotel don't cost an arm & a leg yet. We usually have our class reunion around the time of the Jazz Festival.

Back when I made frequent drives from Florida to South Texas to visit my folks, then my Mom, I would always pick up the Cajun station in Louisiana along I-10 and listen to the radio for a while, a French/Cajun speaking DJ playing all sorts of Cajun/Zydeco and generally music of South LA. I would often stop in Scott, which is slightly west of Lafayette to get some Boudan Balls, or some other fried cajun delicacies to eat along the road!

Hey, folks. We have company in so I can't hang around. It was great seeing the old gang together for the show last weekend. Rich Dworsky was leading the band, they did Guy Noir, Lives of the Cowboys, Mom and Duane. Aoife O'Donavan and Christine DiGiallianordo were there to help with the singing. Quite a night. Everyone enjoy the show and continue healing up!

Yeah, of course living there, I've been to Mardi Gras many times, and I was down there doing Katrina relief the first Mardi Gras after the storm, which was really nice. No big crowds and it was the first time many people had seen each other since before the storm, as people were returning to the city slowly. Families usually watch the parades from the same place every year - near their neighborhood, not down on Canal Street - so they see old friends and have fun. Drunken crowds down in the French Quarter - that was for tourists.
Both Tuesday and Wednesday were state holidays when I lived there.

You have a good weekend too BoatBabe. Jay too - he ducked out a while ago. Yes, our mystery audience each week is growing while the faithful few dwindle! When I logged in to post late this afternoon, the "guest" number surged from zero to like 19 in a few minutes.

Some of those mystery guests must be people, not just bots, given the way they surge around show time.

Ah the sing-alongs! Those were always such fun, and I usually went to "Choir Practice" on the cruises too. I think he is still doing those on his road shows, and probably including the 50th anniversary shows.
Mitch Miller was a popular TV show when I was growing up, and we often had family sing-alongs too. I don't know if families do those any more.

"Roy's Rent-A-Dog" - we really should put our Bernese Mountain Dog to the task of guest control!
I tuned in late so I am about 20 minutes behind the show, but will still change over to TCM at 5pm, as usual. Catch the remainder tomorrow or maybe listen to the whole thing over again, such great music.

Sometimes it is just so nice to sit and relax and do nothing... which means watching something or listening to something or reading stuff on the internet. I did have a reality jolt today when a stranger knocked on the front door in the rain and asked if I was interestes in renting out my old place... across the street.. I had to tell him "not yet" since I have yet to clear it out!

Southwest VA is close to where our NC house is. My daughter and the grands live in NoVA (Northern Virginia) and she refers yo everyplace else as RoVA (Rest of Virginia). Good folks and pretty country in the Blue Ridge. And Dr. Stanley is right - it's Appalachia.
