This week, we return to a great September evening on the 25th of 2004 where we kicked off the new broadcast season of A Prairie Home Companion by welcoming guests Old Crow Medicine Show and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings for a spirited broadcast topped off with the season-opening street dance — music, contests, and of course, the meat loaf and mashed potato supper. The show’s highlights include a few classic songs that have become fan favorites. Old Crow Medicine Show heats things up with the original version of “Wagon Wheel,” and Gillian and Dave offer up the title track of their release Time (The Revelator). Jack Knife and the Sharps add to the fun with “Something to Remember You By,” plus words from the Catchup Advisory Council, Bridesmaid’s Insurance, English Majors, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. This link is to a rebroadcast of the original show: www.prairiehome.org/shows/57289.html?

Old Crow Medicine Show
With a little luck and a whole lot of talent, Old Crow Medicine Show went from playing their slash-and-burn brand of old-time music on the streets of Boone, North Carolina, to bringing down the house at the Grand Ole Opry. Now based in Nashville, these Grammy winners and Grand Ole Opry inductees are bringing audiences to their feet coast to coast and then some. The band for this broadcast: Critter Fuqua, Kevin Hayes, Morgan Jahnig, Gill Landry, Chance McCoy, Ketch Secor, and Cory Younts.
Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings
In the early 1990s, Gillian Welch met Dave Rawlings at the Berklee College of Music in Boston while the two were students waiting to audition for the country band class. Since then, they have carved out a highly successful career, with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association and recordings that include Welch’s Grammy-nominated The Harrow & The Harvest and the Dave Rawlings Machine release Nashville Obsolete.

Be aware that there is a blank spot on the recording up to 5 minutes and 20 seconds... When that happened I checked the audio, wondered what was up, closed down and re-opened, advanced a few minutes and now it's OK. I wondered what was up.

I can't say that I've noticed that "coastal people don't travel" so it's mostly midwesterners who travel to Europe in the summer. Except maybe the APHC cruises, especially the ones including Norway - then the ships were loaded with people from Norway, supposed to be Norwegian bachelor farmers I guess. And many of them were from Seattle!

I have never known even remotely anyone that has attended the Burning Man... it looks very um liberal for an old Southern Man. lol.

Burning Man is pretty much "everything" - not liberal or conservative but more everyone is free to do their own thing. Also once you buy the admission ticket and get there, everything is free. "Gifts" only although one is expected to bring everything they need to take care of themselves for the duration of the visit.

Not as done as I'd like, but this thing that'll come across the Gulf doesn't look too bad. We have a new roof from last year with new, screened guttering, got new fence this summer. I should refill my propane tank; I got the gas cans freshened up last week. We'll see how it goes.

Not so much prep one can do living in a mobile home structure.. but my roof is only a couple of years old and the wife has a metal roof of similar age. Our biggest fear is all of the trees!

Yeah, this sandy soil doesn't hold on to tree roots the way real dirt does. And you can't dig a basement or storm cellar. So, we're pretty exposed down here.

I haven't been to Burning Man yet but I'd like to go. I just worry that it might be too hot during the day. Spencer and his Camp travel in an air-conditioned RV that belongs to one of his friends and Camp Member. I think these principles seem pretty cool and seem to work pretty well in practice. Black Rock City, NV exists only for a couple weeks each summer but it seems to have avoided disasters of some festival events of the past.
10 Principles of Burning Man
1. Radical InclusionAnyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community. 2. GiftingBurning Man is devoted to acts of giftgiving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value. 3. DecommodificationIn order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience. 4. Radical Self-relianceBurning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise, and rely on their inner resources. 5. Radical Self-expression Radical Self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than theindividual or a collaborating group can determine its content.
It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient. 6. Communal effortOur community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote, and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction. 7. Civic ResponsibilityWe value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state, and federal laws. 8. Leaving No TraceOur community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them. 9. Participation Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart. 10. Immediacy Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

Good evening, folks. I never knew anyone who went to Burning Man, either. Knew a few who went to Woodstock. I don't think I know anyone who went to Woodstock either, even though I lived in NYC and went to college in upstate New York, neither of those is real close to Woodstock. Since I was in Europe, I didn't go to Woodstock either, though I did go to Isle of Wight Festival 2 weeks after Woodstock - it was wonderful. And dw, my sentiments are similar to yours about the dust and heat. In the high desert it gets cold at night but can be very hot during the days. Since many of the activities get going after dark, I think sleeping in the RV using solar power to run an small AC might work. That's what Spencer and his friends do.

Well, that looks like a pretty good set of principles, as long as everyone abides, and participates. Reports from Spencer suggests that people are quite compliant or at least if they are using drugs they keep it very private. There at least a dozen AA meetings every day there. Because it is not easy to hold an event that requires the organizers get all the permits needed to build a city that will accommodate 80,000 people, and it was regarded with great suspicion initially, great efforts are made to keep everything on the up and up. The northern Nevada desert is a very delicate ecosystem in a harsh environment so fairly strict regulation is required. Within those regs, everyone is free to do what they want - such as wearing clothing or not. Reality is at that altitude in the hot sun of summer, most people wear clothing and use lots of sunscreen and drink lots of water. Also wear shoes and socks because that alkali desert soil/sand can cause some serious damage to one's feet.
