Greetings fellow travelers around the sun. Tonight we "fall back" to take advantage of more daylight in the early morning, which is fine by me since I have been serving food in the dark to the homeless! Our show tonight comes from...November 5, 2011. A lot of bluegrass it sounds like. It’s a weekend for remembrances this Saturday, as we head to Murray, Kentucky, and the CFSB Center on the campus of Murray State University to recall the life and music of the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe. An impressive line-up of Bill's musical colleagues and friends joins us, including “Blue Grass Boys” alumni: fiddler Bob Black, singer-guitarist Tom Ewing, bassist Mark Hembree, fiddler Bobby Hicks, singer-guitarist Peter Rowan, mandolinist Roland White, and banjo player Blake Williams. Also joining in the celebration, fiddler Stuart Duncan and singer Kathy Chiavola along with our own Rich Dworsky and Pat Donohue. Plus, a few kind words for our dear friend and colleague Tom Keith. For decades, Tom Keith provided sound effects and character voices for A Prairie Home Companion. A St. Paul native, Keith performed with Garrison Keillor beginning in 1976. With vocal gymnastics and a variety of props, he created creaking doors, footsteps, barking dogs — even elephants. Tom recorded an interview before he passed away... shop.garrisonkeillor.com/blogs/column/tom-keith-sound-effect-man?Grammy™-nominated Pat Donohue (guitar) is a native and resident of St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a National Finger picking Guitar Champion and an innovative songwriter, with a stack of albums to his credit on Red House Records and Bluesky Records. His songs have been recorded by Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss, and Kenny Rogers. He performed on A Prairie Home Companion as a regular member of The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band for almost two decades. I'm logged in and ready to listen to some of my favorite performers. Peter Rowan is at MerleFest every year and still he is amazing.

Good afternoon Doc. I saw on the national radar where there was snow in the mountains of Washington today... can you see snow covered peaks from where you are?

Good afternoon Doc. I saw on the national radar where there was snow in the mountains of Washington today... can you see snow covered peaks from where you are? Not from my house, as we are on the Puget Sound side of our hill (view to the west), Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan are to the east and are snow-covered year-round, although the level varies. We are so far north that the tree line and snowline are quite low relative even to Colorado. However, if we go down the hill and look east, we can see the mountains and the snow. And on clear nights in the winter, we can see the lighted ski slopes of North Vancouver, BC, about 50 miles north/northwest.

I love this old-time blue grass music, to which today's "country" can't even hold a candle.
I saw Bill Monroe and band (forget which one he had back then, it was the 1970's) decades ago at the Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention.

The music and stories are great... much better than the tabloid news about artists of today.

The music and stories are great... much better than the tabloid news about artists of today. Amen. There are some great artists out there, but they can be hard to find amongst the volumes of dreck.

OK, I'm settled. I find a lot of good music on Radio Bristol. Which does a lot of live broadcasting on the 'net. So I get to watch as well.

I don't know how old Kathy Chiavola was in this broadcast, but she can certainly project and belt out a tune better than the current grade of female performers. The ones that get the air-time, anyway. I've found a number of ladies who are really keeping Country "alive".

Well, I'm finally feeling like I'm on the road to recovery. I've been at the gym with a trainer for about 6 weeks, finding just how much I've fallen off since about this time a year ago. It's spooky how much we can lose just sitting around.

Congrats on your betrothal, DW! I hope all is more than delightful. Life is good and full. The wife just was watching and smiling as I sang along with the group as they did the old Gospel song "Each Day I'll Do" which I learned as a young child. She had never heard it before. She enjoys the old shows even though she was not aware of them when they were originals.

Music is something that is fun to share. She sings in the church choir so its a nice fit.
