I bristle a bit at the complaints that CT wasn't as good as GK. It doesn't seem fair to compare the old guy with 40+ years at the helm to the young guy that just started.
I feel that Chris would have developed really great continuing show had he had the opportunity though it would never have been just like APHC.
I gave up donations to MPR 3 years ago, but if I were still donating, well I would stop. I know that LFH was a bit pricey to produce especially in the Covid era, and because of Covid restrictions, the show couldn't develop the necessary ensemble feel.
Ah well, all is ephemeral. However, it's hard for me to think we will ever look back fondly on 2020, as we do for most other years past.

Oh - there was a street dance after this show! But I don't think it is the one that I attended, as none of it sounds familiar. Probably that show was a few years earlier, as I met Susan and Patti, as well as both gk and Jay* and their respective then-spouses at the street dance.

I had okra this evening!! I may be a Southerner born and bred, but I do NOT like okra! How did that happen? Well, I live in western Washington now and I don't drink coffee nor do I eat salmon. Had the authorities known, they would not have allowed me into the state. So don't tell anyone!

He made noticeable progress, got easier in the job very quickly. It was just a different show, almost all music, aimed at a different demographic. I hope like hell we never look back fondly on 2020. We'll be in a world of hurt if that's the case.

Laying aside my personal opinion, it does seem to me that one HUGE difference between GK's early years and for many years was that he seems to have put more focus on the radio show than CT did. CT did not make as many episodes in a season and took breaks to pursue his other musical interests. GK toured and promoted his show best as I can tell.

Fried okra is good, okra and stewed tomatoes. That's about it.

Fried okra is good, okra and stewed tomatoes. That's about it. I will eat it fried and in gumbo, but not stewed with tomatoes! But how can Doc not enjoy fresh salmon living in Washington?? I'd love to go down and get one right from the boat and experience the freshness. I drink coffee but honestly cannot really see what all the fuss is about ..

Right, I forgot the gumbo, not being a native Southerner. We'd have okra in the garden at home when I was a kid, but that was Mom's project, she was the only one who liked it. of course, Dad would eat anything.

CT was already a world-renowned musician who had a lot of other commitments when he began the show, and he was probably limited in how many shows APM would contract for, how much risk they were willing to take. Do you recall how thrilled he was when the show was renewed for a second year, and then a third? I don't think he had any long-term commitments.
In retrospect it was wise and fortunate he retained his other income opportunities. After MPR fired GK without a proper and fair investigation (IMHO), I would not have wanted to entrust them (MPR and APM) with my livelihood. Consider how shabbily they treated Thomas and the rest of the cast and crew with the move to New York City.

And congratulations, doc, on ToTP! Thanks, maybe I'll remember to go buy lottery tickets! BoatBabe tells me we have the lottery here in Washington the State, but they sure don't advertise it. As for 2020: One of my colleagues saw a T shirt he liked. It had "2020" across the front, and under that five stars, with only one of the stars highlighted. The commentary was "Not recommended."

Did you notice that the Guy's All Star Shoe Band was not playing tonight.. a renamed Exchange Street Band I wonder if this relates to the season opener status. I think the Fitzgerald is on Exchange Street. I'm pretty sure that although the personnel changed from time to time, the name remained "GASS Band" through the next to last APHC cruise, the one to the Baltics.

Heather Masse, Robin & Linda, the Wailin Jennys, Joe Newberry, the Steeles - likely I wouldn't have known of any of them without the show, but there are many others.

Wasn't Sara Watkins in Nickel Creek with Chris? Regardless, they launched on a bigger national stage with APHC. IMO, one of GK's major talents was finding all these new younger talents.

They did post an episode for rebroadcast tonight.. here is what they said.... I like the one we are listening to just fine though..
This weekend we'll rebroadcast a great show we did out of Charlottesville back in 2003. Virginia-based Americana music masters Robin and Linda Williams were with us, as well as rollicking bluegrass musicians Mountain Heart. Mike Seeger was there, too, playing traditional songs from the rural American South.

Utah Phillips was also well-known in the folk world in the 60's but was brought to the fore again on Prairie Home.

What I meant by "grew up', was just that. Chris Thile was performing as a kid. But all those folks you mentioned, sure, they were affiliated with the show from way back. And Chet Atkins, Johnny Russel? Fourty years, a lot of folks came along with the show at one time or another.

Except on Saturday after the show I watch TCM - "The Essentials" with Brad Bird and Ben Mankiewicz, then Ben hosts one of his favorites, then Noir Alley with Eddie Mueller. After all those TCM cruisers, those guys feel like good friends - you always can grab a chance to chat with them on the cruise as they are most welcoming and friendly. On the APHC cruises, it was the other cruisers who became your friends since we all cruised year after year, and GK kept the cast and crew always working. They didn't have much time to visit with cruisers, thogh Thomas always found at least a few minutes - just like he always did at the live shows.

That's true. I was thinking along the lines of performers I wouldn't have known of, or would have forgotten, had it not been for APHC.
The good news - many of them also appear at MerleFest, Telluride and bunches of other music festivals. IF we ever get to go to festivals or other gatherings again. I may have to start working on a second citizenship again so I can attend live music. Too late for Canada, Ecuador is too infected at the moment, so maybe I'll reconsider Finland. Or rustle up enough money for Portugal if the EU doesn't get too bad again.

Quick local report.. the big storm that hit Alabama and Florida earlier this week brought a little over 4 inches to my rain gauge.. and a lot of that was in a short period of time. I am blessed with fairly sandy soil so it soaks in pretty quickly. There were no tree limbs down and I never lost electricity which happens during summer thunderstorms regularly. My street is a combination of gravel, old patches of hard-packed ground up asphalt, and sand.. so it gets some pretty deep pockets which fill up with water that stands for a week or longer. The neighbors just drive around them.. as it is a private road we would have to take up a collection to get something done to fix them.. so I decided I would tackle part of the job, one wheel barrow at a time. Making good progress by picking up the material that has washed down to the roadside ditch and bringing it back.. but it is a long journey.. but good exercise.
