Ever since this forum began, there have been different opinions about Karma Points. Some thought they were cute, fun and a non-obtrusive way for one to show appreciation (or dislike) for another's post, and healthy for the forum if used correctly.
Others thought they were offensive, not needed, cliquish and not healthy for the forum if misused ("Hey, let's go over to prairieCHATTER and give each other more Karma Points...").
I really didn't have an opinion - except, because of my position, I have refused to participate in exalting or smiting (especially when I REALLY felt like it - There have been some very creative and meaningful posts here from very talented people; I am honored and humbled to be a part of this community.) My opinion about Karma Points was, "Let's keep it and see what happens (and how people react)." Well, enough time has passed for us to determine whether or not we want to keep them.
What do you think? Has your opinion about Karma Points changed over the year? Have they run their course or just getting started? Are you attracted to them or offended by them?
Your vote will determine the future of Karma Points at prairieCHATTER. Please vote and give your views if you so desire so we all can learn something from you. I will tally them on May 10, and we'll ether stay with the system we have now or drop it.
Thank you for your vote – and your opinion.

If I could sell them or trade em for food or bullets I would say "Oh yeah" but I've tried and I can't so "No"

I'd like it if they weren't public. If when a person logged on and had received a karma, s/he'd get a little fireworks display or smiley-face that said, you've been karma-ed. Because I do like to exalt folks here. I think it's fun. But that's easy for me to say. iykwim

What slb said. Sometimes I'm really impressed, touched, amused by something someone says but I just don't have more to say. If we had a little clapping emoticon I could use that. I've never smited anyone, but that happens very rarely, doesn't it?
It's true from time we get little games going on - where a friend or friends jack up each other's karma - but it's just a game. still, I can give it up completely if it's making anyone uncomfortable.

Another thought - if you look at karma and # of posts, we're all pretty "even." I mean they're sort of proportional. So those of us who post way too much have more pts. If we add a whole post just to say "Yay" or "right on" (which only some of us elders would date ourselves by saying ), then people would be clicking on posts only to find there was no real reason to. So a thread would indicate "new" when the only post was a smiley.

still, I can give it up completely if it's making anyone uncomfortable. Yes, while I will probably vote to keep 'em, if anyone says the exalt/smite makes them sad or uncomfortable, the game should go. Obnoxious flirting is a part of my core, but karmas exist on another plane for me.

karma karma karma karma karma chameleon, stay or go, I don't know. Meaningful feedback, positive or negative, in my opinion requires more than clicking a "karma" button. Some folks have helped me so much by telling me what they thought. I would not have gotten that just by looking at the karma total. So, Trusty, take my vote as a No-Opinion

The only problem is people seem to take them seriously, with the result that smiting someone is seen as extremely harsh. I wish they could be all in fun both ways and we could have fun exalting and smiting each other. I've tried to provide good example in smiting people now and then, but it hasn't caught on. If people are just going to be building up karma points without end, there's not much point to it, but if we are constantly seesawing back and forth, it could be enjoyable.

What slb said. I think the karma points are cute and harmless, all in good fun.
But then, I am not someone who would be crushed to be smited. In fact, how would I know unless I check my karma points frequently? Someone smites, someone exalts - it all balances out.
If some feel strongly that the karma points are deleterious, I don't think we have to have them.

I am smitten.
And now, for no good reason, I'm declaring it "Smite gailkate Tuesday!"
And now just watch: people will rally around to exalt her to make up for the smiting.

I'm picturing Bl and me with locked arms, our fierce expressions defying any assault. "Red rover, red rover, let Mike and Joe come over - let's just see you try, you big poopy chicken butts!"
Sometimes we're not entirely lovely and kind.

Now we're getting somewhere! Take that, booklady! (BTW, maybe I should have smitten slb2 instead of gailkate. After all, she's the one who invented "Exalt gailkate Friday." But anyway, the scales must be redressed! Besides, I can smite her and brutus and Trusty when they get a bit too risqué.)

Not fair, not fair!!! Why am I getting all the spankings smitings?! Because you're so cute! Guys tend to smite the cute chicks as a way of getting their attention. Bookie, you should feel exalted to be smited. Understand? Mike P.S. I justed gave you a great big loving smote!

Trusty, since you asked, we've been having fun with the exalts and smites, but I wonder if it wouldn't be a relief to some to simply quit the karma for a while. I'm suggesting that you turn it off for a month and then return to the poll.
If some people truly don't like it, they also might not be very forthcoming about their discomfort, particularly with all this gaity afoot.
Seriously.
