What kind do you use. Do you shampoo everyday or not at all? Any cool tricks you learned and can pass on?

When I bought some Indian made Godrej shaving cream from Amazon.com, I poked around to see what other Godrej products were available. One of the items that looked interesting to me was the Godrej Shikakai soap bar for washing hair. From the Godrej website: Godrej Shikakai New Godrej Shikakai contains Shikakai, Amla and Bhringraj to cleanse condition and nourish hair. With this 3-in-1 enriched formulation, New Godrej Shikakai makes hair soft, silky and gives it a healthy shine. Its AmlaPlus conditioning gives the hair a conditioning experience like shampoos. So, this morning I tried it in the shower. I rubbed the bar between my hands and made a little lather and then I worked that lather into my hair and it became a lot more lather and in no time my hair was squeaky clean. Afterward I used no conditioner or hair tonic because I want to see if this stuff is going to give me any problems (e.g. dandruff, itching scalp, rash, premature balding, etcc). After one use, it seems ok. I will not go beyond saying more than that until Ifve used it for a week to see if there are any real benefits or horrible side effects. Ifll keep everyone posted; especially if this experiment goes terribly south and I develop lumps on the back of my head, or something even worse. All the best, Mike

Boy! Wouldn't that be cool, to have a soap bar that doubles as shampoo and conditioner? I haven't seen that product over here, Mike.
Every time I find something I like, they make it New & Improved and I don't like it anymore. Usually it is too perfumeeee.

Shampoo in bar form - great for the carry-on bag on the plane. For those of you who are unaware, I have a modest obsession with the TSA and air travel. You know the War on Terror (TM) aka The War on Liquids. Liquid shampoo is a challenge for any one who doesn't check luggage, which would be me. I have found toothpaste in powder form (paste=liquid in TSA land), so solid shampoo would be way cool.
I will have to check out this stuff. Boatbabe, Mike said he got it on amazon, maybe we can too.

I must admit, I waver back and forth between ridiculously overpriced hair products from the salon and bargain basement stuff like Suave, bought on sale at the grocery store for 99 cents a bottle. At the moment, however, I am going through a decluttering phase, so I am using up all the little travel sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner that my husband has brought home from hotel stays while on business trips. My current favorite amongst these little bottles is the Aveda rosemary mint shampoo, which I googled and learned costs $9.50 for an 8.5 ounce bottle. Do I have good taste, or what?

Emi and I recently stayed in a 5-star hotel in Seoul Korea and they provided Aveda rosemary mint shampoo; good stuff! Mike

I'm dying to try this stuff, too, but I have some Avon to finish first. Avon has good sales and nothing they make is tested on animals, so I've been buying it for awhile. Trésomme is cheap, right there in the drugstore, and is never tested on animals. So after we all get clean and conditioned, here's my hair tip: rinse your hair totally and then - standing back in the shower - do a quick rinse with cold water. It really does work - your hair will be much shinier. The theory is it closes those little watchamacallits on the hair shaft.

Thanks for the link Mike. I've put the shampoo in my shopping cart and I am nearing critical mass for an order. Whenever I see a book or something else I'm interested in, I put it on my Amazon wish list, or sometimes the shopping cart if it is especially high priority.
It's part of my decluttering process - don't buy it in the first place unless you really want and need it. Amazing how many things I take off the list later on, or never get around to ordering.
Mostly I get shampoo and conditioner at the place where I have my hair cut. A little pricey, but very nice products, also no animal-testing. And it helps support two local small businesses - the salon owners and the product manufacturer.

One might ask, how does the Shikakai shampoo bar smell?
Describing the aroma of the Shikakai bar shampoo is a little difficult. Have you ever been to an open air fruit/vegetable market in Thailand or any other tropical country? The scents from all the products sort of mingle and merge into a somewhat pungent odor that is neither good nor bad, but you wouldn't want to use perfume/cologne that smelled like it. Well, that's what the Shikakai bar smells like to me. The good news is that after you use it and rinse your hair the odor does not linger.
Regards, Mike

~B~ , are you implying that a can of Pledge and a buffing cloth can be easier reference by the word "Poo?"
What a sham! (TeeHee!)

I use original Prell. Lather, rinse. I don't repeat.
I use it when I shower, which is generally every two or three days, as needed. More often when it's really hot and humid.

The experiment continues:
A little background info first: I’m not one of those daily shampoo your hair kind of people. I wash my hair every other day and sometimes I go a couple days without shampooing. I like to give my body’s natural moisturizers and whatnots a chance to do their thing. I’m of the opinion that one can over wash their hair and that will lead to problems. The older I get, the truer this seems to be. Secondly; I don’t use any conditioner/rinse on my hair – just shampoo. However, I do use a little dab of brylcream or hair oil to make my hair a little more manageable to comb and have it stay in place throughout the day. Lastly; I prefer bar soaps for bathing over body washes and creamy body soaps. I guess I’m old fashion like that. If something was good enough for Grandma and Grandpa, it’s good enough for me. So, the idea of a soap bar shampoo is appealing to me.
Having said all that… I used the Godrej Shikakai shampoo bar for the second time today; Emi is using it too. Unlike me, she did read the fine print on the package and informed me that it is recommended to leave the lather setting on your head for a minute before rinsing with water – so I did. And, again, my hair is clean and I have nothing bad to report.
All the best, Mike __________________

According to an article at NPR's website, if one washes their hair more than twice a week, they could be doing more harm than good. I concur.

I'm a Daily Shampoo Girl, although I use one of those conditioners that I massage into the damp hair and don't rinse. I don't lather twice like the people selling the shampoo instruct.
Works fine for me.
Might I add, I actually have hair, and do not use Pledge and a buffing cloth for the best Dome Glow. ;D
(That's for ~B~, Mike. I'm assuming you DO have hair, thus the Shampoo topic.)

The advantages of bar soap/shampoo:
I'm reminded of that scene in the old "Cheaper by the Dozen" film (1950 original, not the remake) when Clifton Webb, playing Frank Gilbreth, demonstrates how to take an efficient shower - while fully dressed in a suit and tie. He was an efficiency expert and could finish a full shower in about 90 seconds. I don't think he included a shampoo though.
Of necessity, for us females, especially if we have long hair, gotta add at least a minute or two.

Off topic, but somebody said "bar soap" which I suppose means soap that is in bar form, not soap you find in a bar. Anyway, I've been reminiscing about how nice my grandmother's place always smelled because of the Palmolive soap in the bathroom. And I've looked for Palmolive in the supermarkets and drugstores where I usually trade, and I haven't seen it. Does anybody see Palmolive where you shop?

I don't think I've seen Palmolive lately, but the jingle is in my head. "Don't wait to be told, you need Palmolive gold."
I think there are internet websites that specialize in selling nostalgia-type products that are no longer nationally distributed. Maybe find it there?
