This morning I was in the mood for music, but I wanted something different than my usual tunes. So, I opened up the vault and looked in the rarely played section and I pulled out Martin Denny’s Exotica (volume 2). Originally recorded in 1957, this is some pretty unusual stuff. Commonly referred to as Tiki bar music, it has a bit of Hawaii, Africa, the Orient and the Amazon jungle in it. Well, this CD was just perfect for this morning; I feel mellow and in love with the world! Track ListingsSoshu Night Serenade Isle of Dreams Japanese Farewell Song (Sayonara) Singing Bamboos Queen Chant (Li Liu E) Wedding Song (Ke Kali Ne Au) Escales When First I Love August Bells Bacoa Ebb Tide Rush Hour in Hong Kong Here’s the question: What music do you listen to when you’re in the mood for something different? Sorry to say, I very rarely play records or CD's anymore. So It's a question of what's on the radio when I have the radio on. Generally I listen to one of the classical stations. But of course APHC's music is mostly non-classical, and I enjoy that. And sometimes I'll listen to the last hour or so of WHRB's "Hilllbilly at Harvard" country and western show on Saturdays which precedes the Metropolitan Opera.

Truly catholic tastes, eh Joe? I don't think I rely on music as much as you do, Mike. I love all kinds, but I don't think about it the way you do. I may learn more about jazz (melodic jazz, not modern, dissonant jazz) this year, as the MN Orchestra is going to have a jazz program for the first time. Quite an experiment, brought to us by our Swedish director, Osmo Vänskä. It took an imported conductor to tell us we have an American-grown art form we should pay more attention to.

That does sound like an interesting album, Mike...I can see why you'd enjoy it.
I like so many different types of music that it's hard to say. I have six very different radio stations pre-set in my van: folk music, classic rock, classic oldies, Contemporary Christian, NPR (of course) and jazz.
In the house, I've got thousands of CDs and LPs. Thousands. And my mom and daddy just brought me a box stuffed full of 45s, from my teenage years.
In no particular order, I like all the above from my stations, I also like classical music (except for funeral marches/dirges.) I LOVE the 40s Big Band sound (heck, that's how I came to find and fall in love with THE BOOK WHOSE NAME I NEEDN'T MENTION HERE!) I like a lot of the stuff I used to dance to in the 80s; on my way to work today I had a mixed CD playing and hit repeat on Crowded House and "Something So Strong," because it just makes me FEEL so good.
I like one-hit wonders. LOVED lesser known artists like Joshua Kadison and Grayson Hugh, and especially the dark moody broody Daniel Lanois and 'Still Waters.' Loved the big booming voice of skinny little Rick Astley. I like soundtracks to movies I enjoyed, I like novelty music when I'm feeling silly (yeah, Dr. Demento is fun sometimes.)
I like instrumentals as long as they don't sound like Muzak, sometimes that's just right when I'm all curled up with a book enjoying some quiet time. When I'm really energetic and in the midst of a lot to do, say, major housecleaning, I'll put on some classic Cream/Clapton, and turn it up loud enough to do structural damage to the house. (It goes without saying I only do this when I'm home alone.)
My parents listened to only one or two types of music when I was a kid, so I like some of that stuff--Sonny James, Ed Ames, Ray Price. My teenage babysitter played Bobby Vinton constantly when I was little (especially "Mr. Lonely," because her boyfriend was in Vietnam.) Hearing any of those takes me right back. So in some ways my taste is 'older' than I am because I still like the quiet gentleman sound of, say, Perry Como, when I'm in the mood. And since I found this board I discovered a great CD by Nancy Wilson with a song that makes me think of some of you...."An Older Man is Like an Elegant Wine." (Some of you are, you know....)
Yeah, the chanteuse thing does it for me, too: Cesaria Evora, Nina Simone....sigh.
The only thing I really didn't ever like was rap, and I still don't. (But I do confess to dancing, quite joyously, to the Gap Band ("Party Train," "You Dropped a Bomb on Me") and to the Weathergirls and "It's Raining Men." IN my younger days. Grizzy still remembers watching all of us girls kick off our shoes and dance to that one when we'd go out to King's Corner in college.)
Oh and....I like spoken things. Ron Perlman reading poetry in his 'Vincent' phase from "Beauty and the Beast," which Griz gave me for a Valentine, once, and what I'll do when it wears out I do not know. I used to have an LP that was Lorne Greene reading O. Henry stories. I'd still be swooning over it if I could hear it today.
But enough about ME! (and you thought you knew who I was....hee hee.....)

I plumb don't know the answer to that. I guess it would be listening to compilation albums with different musicians for each track. I usually listen to CDs of one band at a time. Here's one that I like:Mathieu Mathieu • Cette Ville 2 DobaCaracol • Étrange 3 Martin Léon • Je m'demande 4 Annie Villeneuve • Un Homme 5 Chloé Sainte-Marie • Brûlots 6 Florent Vollant • Nitshiuenan 7 Marie-Annick Lépine • Au Chalet 8 Myreille Bédard • Il Fait Dimanche 9 Polémil Bazar • Les Viscères 10 La Bottine Souriante • La Brunette Est Là 11 Le Vent Du Nord • Vive l'amour

No! I didn't. I forgot all about it. I just recently bought "The Basement Tapes," the first Dylan music I've bought in some time. I'll definitely have to get the Wilburys.

Yes, that's where I saw it, too. Fred still blogs, as far as I know, and also does a thing with YouTubes. Check here: www.dreamtimepodcast.com/ and here:

This is the song that is doing it for me today! Summer WindPerformed by Frank Sinatra The summer wind, came blowin in - from across the sea It lingered there, so warm and fair - to walk with me All summer long, we sang a song - and strolled on golden sand Two sweethearts, and the summer wind Like painted kites, those days and nights - went flyin by The world was new, beneath a blue - umbrella sky Then softer than, a piper man - one day it called to you And I lost you, to the summer wind The autumn wind, and the winter wind - have come and gone And still the days, those lonely days - go on and on And guess who sighs his lullabies - through nights that never end My fickle friend, the summer wind Mike

Oh, golly, I love Sinatra and I especially love him singing that song. I have to do some driving around today. I think I'll get my good Sinatra tape out for good listening. Michael's gone but I'll say thanks for the good idea anyway.
