We had a hell of a storm last night.
Trees uprooted, walls felled and the debris is something else.
Today is bright and clear and calm, but there is another storm on its way.
You wanted to know this didn't you?
I clicked on that link Trusty and got nothing but trouble. I had to swiftly re-boot.

I wouldn't mind so much, but the two inches, (or is that three?) of snow accumulating on my tulips and clematis as I type could be damaging.
And what about the fab, fab, fabulous horsetail/snake grass that I bought from (Sondra) Stokes Tropicals last year? A week ago they were still green at their base and bravely pushing forth after the cold, non-tropic winter. Will they survive?
Minnesota weather get a little too fickle for me.

Just so long as it doesn't hit Boston on Sunday. I've got tickets to the game (an Easter gift from a student's grandmother ).

Bookie,
If it's as nasty up your way as it is here, I'm pretty sure you won't be going to your game today. Just cleaned up a fairly large puddle in the hallway where the rain was driven under the back door. I guess we should be happy it isn't snow.

It sounds like a freaking hurricane outside. I just lit a candle in case the electricity goes out, and I'm trying to read, but really I feel quite nervous about a tree falling on the house. You were right about the game. I dressed in about 12 layers of clothes and made it about halfway up to the T station before I heard on the radio they'd postponed the game. I haven't seen yet when they will make it up. I think there was even talk about postponing the marathon tomorrow, but I guess they've decided to hold it anyway. I feel even more sorry than usual for those people!

House still standing, Bookie? It seems to have stopped raining here (for the moment), but the water is still cascading down my neighbor's driveway and several small lakes have formed in our yard.

Yep, everything is intact. Electricity went off around 4 a.m. (my daughter said; I was asleep), and sometime before I went to bed my car alarm started beeping. I looked outside, didn't see anybody, and before I could go get the button to shut it off, it stopped all by itself. The wind has died down some by now.

Shingles have blown off the roof, it's freezing cold and raining and blowing; friends' roads are washed out, trees down, power out. An old man on the subway today (I went to Boston) was telling us that "it's the end of the world!"

I'm answering the kind inquiries by Dan and Doc K from the cruise thread.
Friday was without doubt the worst rainstorms I have seen in many a year.
Maidenhead made the national news - radio and TV - the whole town came to a standstill for several hours. One girl (disabled) left her home at 8.10am to travel the three miles to the office. She got in to the office at 11am. Another who left her home 7 miles away at 8am phoned in to say she was nearer her home than she was worked and turned round and went home.
Our drinking water here is OK - but not in Gloucester (100 miles west of London). I have a friend who lives there and they will not get anything other than bottled water for three weeks. Mains water has been spoiled by raw sewage.
The water level of the River Thames here is very high, but tomorrow will probably be worse, by the time the water has come off the Chiltern Hills and downstream.
But so far, it has been plain sailing, if you will excuse the pun! I might just go to work by boat tomorrow!!!

I'm glad you are OK. This is reminiscent of New Orleans and Katrina, but fortunately your army is stepping right in with appropriate relief.
Stay safe and (relatively) dry.

It is sunny here and in the mid 80s. The humidity is much improved over yesterday. The grass is greening up a bit after the recent rain. All in all, a lovely late July day.

We talk about weather all over the place, but I thought I'd bring this thread into the new year. I'm looking at weather to see how it might affect Iowa tomorrow night. Looks very cold but clear (much like it is here). Apparently turnout will be everything to the outcome - if independents come out, the Dem caucuses could be profoundly affected and Obama will probably win. The Reps will be affected less; I guess because they don't keep deal-making the way old conventions worked.
Will NH have dug out in time for next week's primary? We need to hear from you in New England for some clues. Did Thos make it back from Maine or will he be there till Easter?

Actually, I don't know about the frozen North (New Hampshire). South of the border here, we're fine. But I think they're pretty used to getting around after it snows, so unless it's blizzarding on Primary Day, the turnout should be normal or better.

I think you're right, Joe, particularly if the Iowa results galvanize some people who might have stayed home if their candidate seemed to be doing all right.
Funny, when I look at a map I figure you should have a pretty good idea what's going on in NH. Boston looks quite close by my reckoning. Is it just that your news doesn't mention nearby states unless there's a major event?

Delta, actually. I was coming from Bethlehem and NW wouldn't have gotten me to ME the same day. My wife flew home on NW from ME and even though we both boarded our flights at the same time, hers took off and mine got cancelled. She made it home last night, albeit at 2 AM, while I had to spend the night in a hotel.

Is it just that your news doesn't mention nearby states unless there's a major event? They run occasional stories: features and major news. So we know about as much about the NH primaries at this point as we do about Iowa. When the primaries happen, they will be big stories. But for now, it looks as if McCain is challenging Romney for the top spot. N.H. weather, OTOH, rarely gets much coverage. The most recent storm was practically noting where I live, but it could have been really big in northern New England.

Here's the latest on Minnesota weather:
We don't expect to get above zero till Sunday, maybe Monday. The windchill will be -25º to -45º tomorrow night, moderating some but picking up again into Saturday night.
Just thought ya'll would like to tell people you know actual living denizens of the Northern Tundra.

More wet snow! It's beautiful but really heavy. I'm wondering what this system has done to all the flood areas - those people are suffering the way the Red River Valley did a few years ago. We're told we have no flood dangers yet this year, but how are all the rest of you? Floods and tornadoes, oh my!

We are once again covered in snow, a particularly wet, nasty kind of snow. But the sun is shining. It wasn't yesterday afternoon when it took me over an hour to go six miles due to all the accidents, the ice and the general despair that overtook us all.

Here's what I woke up to yesterday: Spring time in the Northwest and 7 1/2 inches of snow. Here is what the Ice did to the supposedly indestructable plastic docks. Each section of these docks is about $1000.00.

Temperature 82 degrees, dewpoint humidity 80%, not a breath of air stirring. But that's about to change. Just going to be one big sticky, nasty mess till this thing's over with. No real danger here, just a big PIA. Makes for a good drill, however. Pray for us, folks. I'm okay, but it doesn't have to be a hurricane to make other people nuts. Whoops, here's the first gusts from the "outer bands".
