One of my favorite shows of the year, APHC will be at Wolf Trap, in Virginia. We will be pampered with the poetry of Billy Collins and weep in ecstacy with the Wailin' Jennys. Thomas told us earlier that they've added a new (or two) voice(s). There's a few new-ish guys with the Shoe Band whom I don't know: Dave Bargeron, Jon-Erik Kellso, and Scott Robinson.
I think I might be able to listen to the show as it airs! But posting here is another story....

Those are the guys in our fabulous horn section, anchored by Andy Stein on bari sax... They've been on a few times this season.

Here's my review of the Wailin' Jennys when I saw them in Omaha earlier this month:
"The new Jenny is Heather Massey and she is terrific. She wrote one of the songs they performed ("Drivin'"), which was of course, excellent. What is really amazing is that there are still so many talented female singer-songwriters out there undiscovered, who also play instruments! She plays the bass, I think - it was a tall skinny four-stringed instrument that had deep tones and matched her voice, but looked quite different from the usual bass I've seen. She is from Maine, lives in Brooklyn, and met the other Jennys through a mutual friend. They first tried singing together in a women's bathroom in Philadelphia, a funny story they might tell you.
Heather is very tall and slender, and there were lots of jokes about height on stage. They had a great fiddle and mandolin player with them, Jeremy Penner, also from Winnipeg, and he had great hair, which was also the subject of many jokes. Their sound engineer is named Grant Johnson, and it's not my area of expertise, but the show sounded incredible. Some of that must be engineering as well as talent.
The Jennys did say they would be recording "Calling All Angels" soon; in the meantime, I console myself with the Jane Siberry version. And their a capella rendition of "Bring a Little Water Silvy" was truly stunning. Even though I had seen it on TV, the in-person performance in a small venue was ever-so-much-more-so.
I'm confident you can count on a marvelous performance at Wolftrap."
It's a great thing when a humdrum business trip affords the opportunity to see the Wailin Jennys live, isn't it?

slb2, I didn't really post the review anywhere except here. Thomas just asked me how I liked the Jennys, especially with the new addition, Heather Massey. So I reported in after the concert - they were great!
I'm looking forward to Saturday's show. Just on the radio, this time, though I did consider visiting my daughter who lives near Wolf Trap. She even offered to get me tickets!

Thanks, Thomas. I'm sending this to a fellow Alabamian who just retired from the USDA. This guy is unquestionably the finest foreign animal disease diagnostician in the US. Our loss that he's no longer working. In any case, he's one of the few folks from these backwaters who'll not miss PHC on Saturday afternoons.
Have a fine day, Thomas!

Thanks Thomas. I thought maybe I was nuts or confused thinking that tall skinny thing that sounded like a bass must be a bass, even if it didn't look like one. So it's portable for traveling musicians. Cool!

Hi kitehill. So are you still waiting for spring? We've had downright hot days here in the Politically Correct Northwest, where warmth is illegal til after the 4th of July!

I hope you have a fan Thomas!
And does anyone note the irony in the song - suggesting that "retired" Congresspeople leave Washington?
Actually, most of them just stay there and get lucrative K Street consulting jobs.

I'm incoherent tonight...spent most of the day with friends in the sun and wind on Great Pond. I guess I've OD'd on too much fresh air.

Hi dw. You're not alone. I'm just stunned into silence by the Jennys. They are so wonderful!
As for the guy - Jeremy Penner, who plays the fiddle and mandolin - I don't think he did any singing during the Omaha concert I saw. But he sure is a great fiddle player. and he has really nice hair.
