A Prairie Home Companion hosts a slew of guitarists: Phil Heywood, Dan Neale, along with our own Pat Donohue. Prudence Johnson treats us to her voice as well. Some familiar musicians--Butch Thompson and honey-bear Andy Stein (he's really racking up the frequent flier miles!) all coalesce in St. Paul for a fine show. I didn't mention that I, well, I should put this on the music review thread, but I recently heard a woman, Delores Matthews, at a luncheon hosted by a local synogogue, who sounded reminiscent of Jearlyn Steele. Hard to believe, but she did. She also omitted reference to sweet Jesus in her gospel songs.

How can it be gospel without Jesus?

Well, bookie, Delores was invited by Jewish women. Singing about the Lord and God is gospel, too. I would have felt uncomfortable sitting there in the audience, surrounded by Jews, inc. rabbis and cantors, in a synogogue, hearing about Jesus.

So, does that make me too passive a Christian? I hope not.

I would have felt uncomfortable sitting there in the audience, surrounded by Jews, inc. rabbis and cantors, in a synogogue, hearing about Jesus. Well, I "got" the message of the concert at the synagogue, but it just seems to me that by definition, Jesus is going to be involved in the gospel....i.e. the "good news" of Jesus Christ. Then again, it's only been in the last year or so that I learned that "blues" could function as a noun. What do I know about music? <coughzilchcough>

heh heh. I didn't pick up on how, absolutely yes!, the gospel does include Jesus, so I see your point more clearly now.
But there's not only content, but context when it comes to gospel and Delores kept her songs' context culturally accurate, but adjusted the content so that it was respectful of all who attended the event.
cheers!

I can't wait to hear some pieces of the Grapes of Wrath opera. We turned in our tickets because we were sure it would be too modern and dissonant for us. But I feel ashamed for not being avant-garde.

Just tuned in a bit late. Hi all.
And I'm racking my brain - who did the first version of "Got along without ya"?

Oh, Brit, if I didn't know better I'd say you were up in the midwest, with an outdoor toilet, having to use old corncobs for personal clean-up purposes. Sit down, ( if you can comfortably) and enjoy the show and the company. Evening, folks.

I can't place it either, DrK, because she made it much too sweet and pretty.

So we're got country music, dogs having accidents, green bean casserole and banana cream pie. Feels like home.

I'm not sure about being "first" but Skeeter Davis made it a big hit over here.

Right Brit - Skeeter did a great cover. Found the original I was thinking of - Patience and Prudence.
Very ancient, must be the 50's.
