Twas the day before Easter, when all through the house Much cleaning was happening, which upset the mouse. Weeks of pollen from the tall pines, followed by oak catkins Has cluttered the decks, the yard and even the compost bins. People, dogs, and shoes track in so much debris We are swiffering, vacuuming and dusting all we can see! Meanwhile our good friend Garrison is bringing us a fun and entertaining option for the evening listening. A classic show from the archives from March 30, 1996, performed live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, it’s the Second Annual Talent from Towns Under Two Thousand Show with The Freight Hoppers, a Southern-Mountain string band from Bryson City, North Carolina (pop. 1556); 10-year-old Emily Shackelton, a young singer from Biwabik, Minnesota (pop. 1428); The Fly Creek Philharmonic, from Fly Creek, New York (pop. 350), a 13-person group of performers playing toy instruments; The Griffin Family, Rich "Eureka" Jones, and The Smith Brothers --- all from the small towns and rural areas of the U.S. www.prairiehome.org/shows/58375.html?

Nice opening from the Griffin family.. reminds me of some of the early folk music/country performances on black and white TV, the radio, and the contests!

Hi DW! Thanks for posting the link.
I was cleaning ad clearing in the basement and garage, had to reach a suitable stopping point so I'm late. Oh well, as they say...

Hmmm, some electronical challenges already.
I had a hard time getting the post function to work. Perhaps I was overly excited about hearing the talent is all from towns of under 2,000. My little NC town would qualify and there's lots of talent there!

By the way, I know Flatwoods, WV pretty well and didn't think it was that small, same with Bryson City, NC. Now I had a college classmate from Fry Creek, and that is indeed a very small town. She verified that.
Flatwoods, WV is important because it is where statewide committees and associations meet because it is in the middle between Morgantown (home of WVU) and Charleston, which happens to be the state capital. And it has the IMHO scariest take-offs and landings at its airport of any place in the eastern US.

An old Carter Family great, and a West Virginia family to perform it! Who could ask for more?
There were so many things I loved about living in West Virginia and we remain Mountaineers forever, wherever we live. (along with orange blood because we are Broncos fans too of course.)

Just how big of a plane can land at Flatwoods international? lol Glad you got to hear some, that cleaning up is always more lengthy than expected.

So I should not reveal anything if you started from the beginning right?

Oh we drove to Flatwoods because it was in the middle. It's Charleston that has the scary airport. When landing you a cannot see any airport anywhere in the vicinity until the very last second, and you better land quick or else you will go off the other end because the airport is built on a mountaintop. When taking off, you are certain you will run out of runway before you are in the air.
Morgantown is theoretically worse because it is not quite a mile long, although the road running next to it is euphemistcally called "The Mileground." However, only little planes fly into MGW - only Beechcraft 1900's when I lived there. They can land on a dime practically, and I never worried there. If you are in the first or second row you can look out the front window and watch the landing! Charlestown has real jets that require more landing space.

So I should not reveal anything if you started from the beginning right? It's OK to reveal. I think there is something else I need to do at 5 (I forget but I wrote it in my book so I'll check later) so I'll have to catch the end of the show tomorrow.

I suspect that the small town contestants must have needed to fit the general mood of the PHC to make it to the show... not hearing rock and roll, punk rock, etc. LOL
Did you find some bourbon for your glaze??

No, Howard says he will get it tomorrow morning when he does the usual Sunday morning shopping. He says that he knows bourbon and the Jim Beam will do fine, as it is "a medium grade" bourbon. And it can be purchased in 50 ml bottles (I already checked the web site) while most brands must be purchased in at least 375 ml, and most commonly in 750 ml bottles. Since we don't drink bourbon, or much alcohol at all, no sense buying a big bottle when the recipe calls for only 1/4 cup (about 60 cc).
I noticed the WaPo recipe was for a 4 pound boneless ham while I bought a larger bone-in ham, on sale of course. So I think I will need 2 or 3 of those little bottles but still much less than 375 or 750.
I have been reviewing recipes for leftover ham too.

Oh yes, Great Smoky Mountains. Not far from home and quite beautiful, though more crowded and touristy than our neck of the woods.
I took the kids to Gatlinburg and we had a great time though we haven't yet got around to Pigeon Forge and Dollywood. It's on my list, maybe with the grands.

My wife, Marie, is a hallmark channel addict. During the pre-Christmas season she has me watching so many Christmas shows... all with pretty much the same plot! There is one that takes place at Dollywood, and of course Dolly is a guest star. It might be better at holidays (Dollywood) when there are special themes and areas.. deorations.. I just cannot imagine it during the Summer!

I can recall when it was not possible to purchase hard liquor on Sunday at all! I think that all alcohol sales cannot start until noon on Sundays in parts of North Carolina... when I first started going, there was no alcohol at all for sale in Jackson County on Sunday, unless you were a "club" member.

Dollywood is in the mountains, or at least the foothills, so it is not as hot as a lot of theme parks can be in the summer. But I bet it is crowded during the summer.
I prefer to travel in May and October, the proverbial shoulder season: better weather, less crowded.
These days I really can't travel much as it is best if Howard is not left home alone for very long. I miss working and seeing patients but I think 40+ hours/week is too much time away. Oddly, nobody wants to hire a part-time family doc, especially one over 65 years old. Age discrimination is overt, unless you are already full-time in one place for years and want to "slow down." That can be accepted, but doesn't apply to my lifestyle.
Oh well. The slowing down allows more time for all this cleaning out and move prep.

I asked Howard to call and check to be sure the liquor dept is operating on Sunday. Even here is Washington the State, the most unchurched state in the nation, you might get surprised. I think there are still dry counties in NC and perhaps elsewhere in the south. There are no bars in our little town there though you can get wine with dinner at one of the restaurants (there are only 2 or 3 that are not fast food, pizza places or diners) and beer is sold at the bowling alley food stand.
When I was a kid in Virginia suburbs just outside DC they had blue laws that prohibited selling anything other than essentials on Sunday. There was an unfortunate incident with the goldfish bowl and my mom had to persuade the store manager that purchase of a fishbowl was truly and emergency. They relented, but it wasn't easy!

I like this group too. Carter Family tune is always a good bet. Our NC place isn't far from the Carter Family Fold, and it is also on my list because I haven't ever been there! How could I have missed that?

OK, time for moving over to TCM and maybe a little more cleaning before it gets dark. The garage door and lower level (daylight basement) face west so good for evening work.
Have a great week!
