Well Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve to all. My wife (Marie) and I went out for a tasty adult beverage and some sausage and sour kraut earlier today to beat the crowds and enjoyu the late Spring weather break. (Yes it is early!) Temps in the 80's with blue skies and a few puffy white clouds drifting over. Some folks were already out with their green outfits.. some creative and some not so much! This week, we travel back to March 16, 2002 for a show that was broadcast live from the Fitzgerald Theater, with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Mollie O'Brien, Robin and Linda Williams, Peter Ostroushko, and accordionist Dan Newton. Highlights include “End of the Line” from Garrison and the Hopeful Gospel Quartet, a rousing “Caught in the Crossfire” from Rhonda Vincent, “Wild About my Loving” from Dan Newton and the band, the Peter Ostroushko original “Coming Down from Red Lodge,’ plus Catchup, the history of broadcasting, talk of St. Paul, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57701.htmlBe sure and wear some green when you listen to the show!!

About tonight's guests:
Rhonda Vincent was barely five years old when she began performing with her family band, the Sally Mountain Show. She’s been in the spotlight ever since. Named Female Vocalist of the Year seven times by the International Bluegrass Music Association, this ace mandolinist has dozens of albums to her credit, including her latest, Music Is What I See.
Mandolinist, composer, arranger Peter Ostroushko, who made his first Prairie Home Companion appearance in 1974, grew up listening to tunes played at family get-togethers in the Ukrainian community of northeast Minneapolis. It’s the music that provided the basis for many of his compositions — works that have been performed by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, among others. Peter won an Emmy for the score of Minnesota: A History of the Land. He passed away in 2021 and below is a compilation of some of his work on our show.
The Hopeful Gospel Quartet makes an appearance on this week’s classic show, and it makes sense to check in with Robin & Linda Williams, who along with Mollie O’Brien and Garrison, comprise this formation of the quartet.
Robin and Linda Williams For decades, Robin and Linda Williams were frequent guests on A Prairie Home Companion starting in 1976. They have made numerous television appearances on the Nashville Network’s Fire on the Mountain, Nashville Now, and Music City Tonight. The duo has also been heard on other nationwide radio programs, including the Grand Ole Opry, Mountain Stage, and NPR’s All Things Considered. With more than two dozen recordings and three musicals to their credit, they are considered to be among the finest songwriters in the folk-country tradition.

When I used the link in your post DW I got "Page not found" but if I typed into Google "Prairie How March 16, 2002" then I eventually got a the show link that would play. On that link it is C&P's on the first line, but I couldn't make it work except by hand typing. (Almost) foiled again by the electron imps. now I'll post and see what happens.
ETA: This one worked this time, so I went ahead and started the show 2 minutes early, probably a first!

Ooohhh, shades of the great Traveling Wilburys. My heart is still broken over the loss of Roy Orbison.

Why is Roy Orbison not in end of the line video? As Orbison died after recording his vocals but before the video was shot, a shot of a guitar sitting in a rocking chair and a photo of him are shown when his vocals are heard.

I think our unnamed fan club is getting larger with time. By the time I put up the link and info this afternoon, I attracted at least 52 guests.. and there are a fair number logged on now, hopefully they got your corrected html!

I didn't know that about the video. But then I didn't watch a lot of music videos on then-brand-new-MTV back then.
I was in the hospital when news broke of Roy's passing. I was too sick to notice much but I did notice that.

I suspect many "fans" are bots, probably set to track particular names, identify any royalties that might be due. Permissions for using the music can be difficult to obtain and the artists' agents pursue vigorously to obtain the monies due to those artists. At my college reunion, a fellow in the class ahead of mine (he's a Hollywood type) had done a great film about the events of the day because 1968 - 1973 -ish was a very impactful time. We can view it again on his private link but it can't be posted to YouTube because of licensing and permits for the music and specific news clips. My class had such a great time at reunion last year that we are having and "encore" class reunion again this year!

When I was in 5th grade Virginia History class, we did not believe in "West Virginia." We called that city that GK mentioned "Wheeling West, Virginia."
But I guess I believe in Mollie O'Brien and definitely I believe in the Evil Boll Weevil.

Funny story alert: when my kids were young, and we listened to the show Saturday night during supper, I would jump up from the table and do a little jig during the Powdermilk Biscuit interlude. They giggled and didn't often join in... but it was just a tradition... now my wife Marie has just danced a little in the kitchen during the song! Some things carry on for generations... so to speak!

We weren't sufficient regular listeners when the girls were young but son Spencer came along on the first Alaska cruise and became fully indoctrinated.
Then younger daughter came with me on the APHC Baltics cruise to celebrate her 30th birthday. She became indoctrinated too.
I was wearing my requisite green sweater but it is HOT here - 65 degrees and sunny! - so I had to strip down the mu T shirt. My leggings are a blue-green, I say that counts for wearin' o' the green.

Our place is pretty private - foliage and fences all around - but I am well covered in T shirt and leggings.
It is very weird to have it be so sunny and warm today in March and predicted to be the same for next 3 days.

Well we have some warm weather as well.. but the bigger indicator of climate change down here is the tide. Tidal flooding is taking place in places where development is close to the ocean, the bays, etc. In wilderness places the change is seen where pine trees and even palm trees start to die because of salt water. And Florida spends millions of dollars pumping sand on beaches because the development has fixed the coastline in a place that cannot move back and forth with the normal course of erosion on barrier islands. So the future is bleak.. government will continue to bail out rich coastal owners because of their tax revenue and wind up having to charge more taxes on those who cannot afford to even go to the beach that much anymore because parking is limited and costs money!

NO annual pass to state parks? Aren't many of the beaches part of state parks? I haven't been to Florida in years except for cruise departure. Coastlines are a problem everywhere but Florda does have a disproportionate share.
Yesterday's WSJ had a front page story on a Miami Beach condo sale for a record $120 million. Obviously no slowing down n coastal development. Many people are now "self-insuring" their multi-million dollar properties. If they do so,they have the money to just rebuild, but the state and locality still have to deal with roads, power, and other public services for that area.

I didn't even think to request bratwurst or beer in the post-op recovery area. All I got was crackers and apple juice.

Miami Beach was so against "trouble" during Spring Break that they increased parking fees to $100/hour and closed down many parking garages. They also put up barricades to stop people from crossing the roads accept at intersections. State Parks require entry fees from $6 to $10 per car per day. The money hungry Florida Republicans created a state insurance fund to insure coastal residents that cannot get a policy from regular insurance companies. When a storm does come, the state insurance company tacks a fee onto all resident insurance policies for homes and cars.. so that non-coastal residents have to pay for years to pay off rich coastal residents.. its a shame but no one will start a movement to throw the bums out!

Sorry - it seems like it is that way most everywhere these days, like going back to the Gilded Age. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer subsidizing them. The surprising thing is that many of those poor people keep enthusiastically voting for favors to the wealthy. Triumph of hope over experience - they keep hoping that next time, they will hit the lottery. And I read about the Miami Beach "No Spring Breakers Here" policies. It was well-covered in the WSJ
