We got a free calendar or two, doc, but only smaller front-of-the fridge size. So I got something larger. Plus putting things on my phone calendar. I need multiple reminders these days! All three of our calendars are that size, but only the bank one has room for notations each day. I use my DayTimer for that, haven’t really migrated to phone/computer calendar. There have been more than a few times that I was really glad to have a paper record. One electronic misstep and those can be gone in an instant. I am at the point where I need electronic and paper!! Sad sad.

I can understand your commitment, DW. It's not as though people can just be plugged in to your schedule. One of the fellows I was helping out got caught up in a scam where someone asked him to cash a check ... needless to say it was a fake, and the homeless guy took the fall. Wound up doing 9 months in jail up here. I saved all of his possessions and now he is out so I will bring him over soon and we can go through what he wants to keep and what we can repurpose. He was carrying everything around in a shopping card with added storage poles. But he says he wants to travel lighter now. Will see how that works out. I wish several of my connections would go into a program to help them get housing, but they are convinced that they are better off on the streets. A lot of housing alternatives prohibit pets or the use of alcohol or drugs. One of my friends used to manage the only “wet shelter” in town - endless prejudice against it from the community. Of course the community complains more about the same people homeless on the street. The shelter did not allow misbehavior inside the shelter - residents could not be rowdy, and had to confine substance use to their own rooms. I watched CNN’s “Hero of the Year” award show. Ten eminently worthy projects, with the winner being a veterinarian who developed and runs a program for getting free vet care to the streets for street people who may not have shelter but they have and love their pets. His project is impressive and very moving - gets viewers to see that those are human beings, people who love their pets just like other people who are housed.

There was a piece on the morning news today about some vets that take a VAN around to Indian Reservations in the Southwest to provide care to the dogs (and other animals) that are out there in the wilds of New Mexico and Arizona where there are not regular vets. It seemed like such a worthy idea.

What say you Doc, is "alert" not a good thing to say about babies?

“Rez dogs” are a common phenomenon. They are feral but there are plenty of pets and livestock who need care too.
When we first had Callie the Beagle show up in our backyard, we thought she must be a rez dog. However, it became immediately apparent that she must have been a family dog who got lost or abandoned - she knew and obeyed commands and took good care of her puppies, jumping over our 5 foot fence to get to them when we shut her out (we didn’t know about the puppies at first). DW, if you didn’t follow this in the other threads, we found her and her puppies in the backyard right before we were leaving on two weeks vacation so we took them up to the shelter in Flagstaff. They were thrilled, and mom and pups were put in a foster home until weaned.
After vacation I went back up to Flag and stopped in at the shelter - mom and pups were brought back for adoption and the puppies were immediately adopted by Callie was there still all by herself. I adopted her immediately. It wasn’t in our plan because we were moving back east just a few days later, but I couldn’t leave such a brave momma dog ther in the shelter.

Have you guys thought about the difference in how the Gore v Bush election was resolved compared to the Biden v Trump and how now 3 years later we seem to be no closer to resolving the issue?

What say you Doc, is "alert" not a good thing to say about babies? Not if it’s obvious you say that only because you don’t have anything nicer to say - “beautiful baby” or “cutest baby I’ve ever seen.”

Have you guys thought about the difference in how the Gore v Bush election was resolved compared to the Biden v Trump and how now 3 years later we seem to be no closer to resolving the issue? I’ve thought a lot about this, and as usual, have arrangements in place if I feel we need to leave the country. The issues are different - in 2000 there was the immediate question of “Who is gonna be president?” And it was decided in the appropriate legal fashion (yes, a query of partisanship in the SCOTUS), a concession was made and the inauguration proceeded peacefully. Now it’s who is eligible, what if he is convicted of a crime - can he still be president (I don’t think there is an explicit ruling that he can’t govern from prison) - will we see the end of democracy when he refuses to agree to the peaceful transfer of power? Most worrisome to me is that the SCOTUS has clearly indicated it is now a partisan entity. Trump made it clear in a speech yesterday - he busted his ass to get Kavanaugh on the court and now he is owed to “be excused” from being treated like all other citizens, so the Supremes better rule in his favor.. We’ve given up the idea of three equal powers - executive, legislative and judicial.

Pittsburgh Steelers just defeated the Baltimore Ravens, so they remain in contention for the play-offs. The Ravens have already clinched their playoff spot. The various "bird" organizations have been considering and struggling with the great cleansing movement that is spreading across the nation. It turns out that there are a number of bird species with common names that reflect persons in the past who may not have been on the correct side of today's moral, ethical and political standards. So there is a move to change the names of some species, and many people have left the Audubon Society because they decided to not drop the name. A humor columist wrote his own opinion on what birds should renamed and it was very funny... he included birds such as the Baltimore Orioles (thinking they only have the name because they look like the baseball players in uniform) and your reference to the Baltimore Ravens triggered that memory in my brain.. what exactly is a Baltimore Raven anyway? LOL

DW, I did some Sue Scott research during the monologue. Sounds like she's in pretty good shape. Still in the Twin Cities, involved in the theater scene, but doing a lot of production type work as well as performing. And she has a podcast "Island of Discarded Women". you can look it up online, and watch past, filmed episodes. So she's still busy!

DW, I think Baltimore "Ravens" refers to the city's connection to homeboy Edgar Allan Poe, not a specific Raven variety. Of course at one time they were the "Orioles". That one I don't know. Anyway, take care, folks, have a good week!

The name “Ravens” was selected because of Baltimore’s connection to Edgar Allen Poe and his poem “The Raven.” Nothing to do with the bird at least not originally.
My daughter is a birder and a social justice warrior but she hasn’t made any comment on the matter yet. In fact, in the book unpacking effort I found a beautiful book “102 Favorites - Birds of America” that of course uses Audubon prints to illustrate. Gen says she definitely wants it - don’t put it up for sale!
Y’all have a great week

BTW, I’m switching over to TCM to watch “Dominick and Eugene” - very good movie, underrated. Filmed in Pittsburgh - very well done and beautiful. Also a great back story with several “feel good” features and good deed-doers supporters.
ETA: Pittsburgh is the nicest city I have ever lived in, which is very high praise since I’ve lived in dozens of cities. Beautiful scenery, many amenities such as the outstanding arts facilities: pro sports teams; great educational institutions; and a diversity of ethnic communities with corresponding churches, restaurants and markets.

That’s old history now. Anyway, I’m loyal to a team not to a particular player. Despite my orange blood, I have the Broncos on my personal Injured Reserve List and I am a Seahawks fan!
