Well a Happy First Saturday of the NEW YEAR to everyone. It's time for most folks to be keeping their NY resolutions still, packing up the decorations of the season, wondering what that strange stuff is in the leftover containers, and generally wondering what the difference is this year compared to last! But the wise will gather together on a Saturday evening and listen to the radio show as they have faithfully done for many years together. This brings them comfort as good as Ketchup, Powdermilk Biscuits, and an update on what has been going on in the little town that time forgot, where are the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children are above average! During this week's classic rebroadcast, we revisit a great show aired live on January 6, 2001, from the Fitzgerald Theater on Exchange Street in downtown St. Paul as A Prairie Home Companion welcomed Laurie Lewis, Tom Rozum, and Bruce Molsky on their “Winter's Grace” tour, plus a salute to Twelfth Night with actor Charles Keating and a 12-person drum ensemble with Marc Anderson. Highlights include the “Boogie-Woogie Dance” by Pat Donohue and the house band, “Sail Away Ladies” and “Winter Grace” by Laurie Lewis, Tom Rozum, and Bruce Molsky, some banging music from the Drum Ensemble, a Tom Keith Sound Effects sketch, The Lives of the Cowboys, the Twelfth Night, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57841.html

Fiddler, singer, and songwriter Laurie Lewis grew up in Berkeley, California, and began playing violin as a child. It was at the Berkeley Folk Festivals of the 1960s that she first caught the folk bug. And while she drifted away from the music after her high school days, she always kept her fiddle stashed under the bed. A prudent move. In her early 20s, she discovered the Bay Area bluegrass scene and realized that music would be her life’s work. In the mid-1970s, she helped found the Good Ol’ Persons, an all-female ensemble, and she went on to form the Grant Street String Band, Blue Rose, and the Right Hands. Mandolinist Tom Rozum, Laurie's longtime collaborator, joins her for today’s show along with Bruce Molsky
Charles Keating was best known for his role as Carl Hutchins in the daytime soap opera Another World where he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal. Born in London, he immigrated to Canada as a teenager — and later moved to the U.S. His stage appearances included the Guthrie Theater, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and more. He also appeared on Broadway and in film. He passed away in 2014.

I’ve just tuned in, ready to sit and listen since I just spent 4 hours downstairs dealing with packing and cataloging and arranging the books we plan to sell. Exhausted!
Ah the Innocent Years prior to 9/11

Hi DW! Thanks for posting the link. How’s your week been? I wish I could report that all is wonderfully blissful in the NEW year. Alas, once again I have found that the service industry is both underqualified and less than honest when it comes to making professional repairs. Long story short, after enduring several cold nights (by Florida standards) without central heat, the HVAC tech finally showed up about 4:30 yesterday for what he said was a 30 minute replacement. I knew I was in trouble when he said he was replacing the heating element in the AC with a smaller one but it would work fine ... several hours later after trying to explain that it must be something else wrong with my system... he demanded payment and left with a promise that someone else would come this morning to give it a new set of eyes. And late this afternoon when I called the office and talked to their friendly telephone answering person, they promised to call me back as soon as they could contact the on call technician, and still not heard a thing. But today was unseasonbly warn and we opened the windows and have enjoyed the mid 70's all day.

Do you have a calendar with the different special days of this season? I never followed them, since my faith did not celebrate religious holidays.. but I was intrigued when I was looking at recipes and found that there is a french pastry that is baked in France to celebrate Epiphany.. which is what this guest is talking about! The same thing.

I don’t know of such a calendar but Epiphany or “Twelfth Night” is celebrated in the Episcopal Church, in which I was raised. It represents the day that the 3 Magi arrived to visit/honor the Christ Child. December 25 is only the first day of Christmas, though publicly and commercially it is regarded as the end.
I can’t remember that France has an official state church but I think not. However, the largest portion of French people are nominally Roman Catholic though it’s my impression that many are not practicing nor particularly religious. But wow are there ever a lot of fabulous cathedrals!

Breakin Up Christmas - I usually wait until Epiphany to take the tree down so I will do that this weekend. I’ll leave my Christmas Village up a little while longer - still thinking of buying another village building or two, and maybe some more villagers because I can often negotiate some lower prices after the holidays.
I am sorry you had such a hard time with the central heat. Maybe there is good news on the horizon with the emphasis on local community colleges teaching useful trades. Not everybody needs a 4 year degree in liberal arts or STEM. We had an electrician for years who would come in to fix something with a paperback copy of Emmanuel Kant’s “On Being and Nothingness” in his back pocket for spare time reading. Howard was a philosophy major so they would talk philosophy when the work was done. I’m sure that fellow earned a lot more as an electrician than he would have as a “professional philosopher” whatever that would be.
Howard did much better with his AA in nursing, even better when he got his BSN (Bachelors in Nursing); prospects weren’t so good as a philosopher. I’ve done very well with my BA in Anthropology, but it was of course augmented by the MD.

My previous wife's mother was a collector of one brand of Christmas Village pieces and over time amassed enough to fill up an entire curio cabinet with many shelves. I am not sure what happened to all of that when she passed away. Her two daughters may have split them up or they could have been sold a few years back when the parents moved into assisted living. There are so many different types today.. collections that people cherish and get more for such a short period of display.

Well, the week has gone pretty well. No big deal with New Year's. Our daughter's family was up in Washington, DC after Christmas. I've spent some time filling in the new calendar, lining out some appointments and activities. Getting the new year started!

My village is “Hawthorne Village, Thomas Kincade’s Village Christmas” and I’m very picky about getting the right brand, though a few items are from a different brand that I wanted to integrate the village. The brand I have is otherwise all white.
I store my village in their original custom foam boxes the rest of the year, but the 30 buildings would definitely fill a curio cabinet otherwise. The original items were purchased via subscription - Hawthorne would send a new building every couple of months, thought I discontinued when we moved. I have since bought the additions on eBay. I think that my grand daughters will want them because they are fascinated by photos and videos of the village. If not, the kids can sell them on eBay.
I have fun setting up the village every Thanksgiving, and we enjoy it until after 12th night. Everyone who comes over marvels at it, and when it is lit up at night it is quite beautiful.

Well, the week has gone pretty well. No big deal with New Year's. Our daughter's family was up in Washington, DC after Christmas. I've spent some time filling in the new calendar, lining out some appointments and activities. Getting the new year started! I forgot to order the new DayTimers (I’ll do that shortly, thanks for the reminder) but we received a couple of free wall calendars. The prettiest is from our bank, as it has photos of the surrounding area, all taken and submitted by bank customers. The Seattle Times puts the year’s two-page calendar on the inside cover of the Sunday Magazine. The top page this year is a photo of Smith Tower (tallest building west of the Rockies for years) and the whole year is on the lower page. I like being able to see the whole year at once, so that calendar is on the wall by my bed or my desk.

I’ll look into purchasing the livestream. Last year I “met” a couple of ladies on one of the livestream shows and we get together about every other month down south of Seattle for lunch. It’s fun to get together in person with other fans.

We got a free calendar or two, doc, but only smaller front-of-the fridge size. So I got something larger. Plus putting things on my phone calendar. I need multiple reminders these days!

I can understand your commitment, DW. It's not as though people can just be plugged in to your schedule. One of the fellows I was helping out got caught up in a scam where someone asked him to cash a check ... needless to say it was a fake, and the homeless guy took the fall. Wound up doing 9 months in jail up here. I saved all of his possessions and now he is out so I will bring him over soon and we can go through what he wants to keep and what we can repurpose. He was carrying everything around in a shopping card with added storage poles. But he says he wants to travel lighter now. Will see how that works out. I wish several of my connections would go into a program to help them get housing, but they are convinced that they are better off on the streets.

All three of our calendars are that size, but only the bank one has room for notations each day. I use my DayTimer for that, haven’t really migrated to phone/computer calendar. There have been more than a few times that I was really glad to have a paper record. One electronic misstep and those can be gone in an instant.

I had a Day-Timer as well, but hadn't really been using it much, so I didn't mess with getting one this year. The less I can get away with dragging around is better.
