It is the last get together for 2023 and the few and happy folks have made it another year! I'll peek in and join when I can during the final game for the unconquered FSU Seminoles playing against the Georgia bulldogs who lost and got dropped way down the list. This week, we revisit a classic show to see the New York December 30, 2006 engagement with American bebop jazz pianist and vocalese singer Bob Dorough, and jazz singer Prudence Johnson. Plus, the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band seemed ten feet tall with the addition of early-jazz superhero Vince Giordano and the mad hatter of violin, Andy Stein. We’ll also have the Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, the News from Lake Wobegon, and much more this Saturday. Highlights include a great song about New York, “The One I Love” from Prudence Johnson, “Back to Me” from Pat Donohue, “Moon River” from Bob Dorough, Guy Noir, Bob, Catchup, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57091.html

When Bob Dorough was growing up in Arkansas and Texas, he wanted to be a cowboy, but changed his mind once he began playing music. It was the right choice. His career in jazz took him to Paris in the mid-’50s, where he recorded with singer Blossom Dearie. Then it was on to New York. He collaborated with Miles Davis, the Fugs, and Allen Ginsberg, and he served as musical director for ex-boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. He also launched his solo career with the album Devil May Care (Bethlehem). Then, in the early 1970s, he began a project that would endear him to generations of young TV watchers — even if they didn't know his name. "Schoolhouse Rock" (remember Dorough’s jingles “Conjunction Junction,” “Three Is a Magic Number,” and “My Hero, Zero”?) was on the air from 1973 to ’86, and has appeared from time to time in the decades since. Bob passed away in 2018.
VINCE GIORDANO grew up on Long Island listening to old 78s on his grandmother’s Victrola. He joined the musicians union at 14, playing a number of instruments. After high school, he joined the Navy and played in a big band that toured South America playing jazz, rock ’n’ roll, and music indigenous to the countries they visited. He later formed his own band, The Nighthawks, which continues to perform at Birdland and other venues. Also a big-band historian and collector, Giordano has more than 30,000 scores in his collection, most of which were found on cross-country trips spent poking around in musicians’ basements.
That silky alto and striking style — you’d expect to find Prudence Johnson singing at a high-tone nightspot. And you might. But be it a concert hall, a little jazz club or A Prairie Home Companion, Pru is the perfect complement. As one music critic put it, “[There’s] not a genre she hasn’t interpreted with her ducky, sensual alto voice and terminally good taste.” Her 10 album releases include Moon Country, featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael, and ’S Gershwin. On the silver screen, she appeared in Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It, and in Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion. Prudence continues to perform and regularly does appearances with Garrison across the country.

Well my poor Seminoles are having a wood shed whupping because so many of the 1st stringers deserted the team and skipped the bowl, thinking they can make it in the pros or else transfer somewhere else for next year. A real mess that college football has become, players getting paid big money and yet don't have to play the whole year, sigh, Anyway I just wanted to let yall know why I am not chatting and listening along.

Thanks for posting the link. Sorry about the Seminoles. You are right about the ruination of college football.
Now lemme see if I can find the show.

I don't think I'll be doing any listening or chatting. I've been in a straight-back chair all afternoon with my fellow Dulci'murkins and I need to switch positions. Also, we had our pre-New Years' feed and I'm feeling a little snoozy. So I don't know if I'll be completely engaged wherever I am. Take care, all. And pleeeeze, let's do our best for a Happy New Year!

Alrighty then, I got tuned right in. I left the sound on for this iPad because it doesn’t make as much noise at me as my PC does.
I remember this show as it comes from the era after I took the APHC cruise when I started tuning in regularly, and it talks about the NYC and the Greenwich Village I knew in my youth. I met a lot of those people GK is talking about. They hung around Washington Square in the Village and so did I.

Ah the Brill Building, font of great music the accompanied the text of the youth.
GK and the cast would include all these great Brill Building tunes in the sing-alongside that followed the lived shows.

Hi BoatBabe! This is a good show to tune into. Did you hear the Brill Building medley?

Brill Building medley is just starting now. Excellent. Know all the words, and can sing harmony to most.
Edit: All. I can sing harmony and lead to all of them. This has got to be Prudence Johnson.

Yup, it’s Prudence. Whatever happened to her? It’s been Heather Masse on the duet circuit lately. GK used to always insist on a young blond. Maybe that’s the problem, Prudence isn’t young any more, but I guess Heather isn’t either, nor are we.

Limping in from the massacre ... Well if they are going to contract like professionals and aren’t amateur college students any more, then they should fulfill the contract and stay put, attend ALL games. Even post-season. Poor home training, but waddaya expect once it’s become All About the Money?

Oh I am so disappointed in the world these days, makes me glad that I am involved in serving the homeless... it is hard to complain when someone says thanks for a pastry!

Christmas has been commercialized to the point that all have forgotten that December 25 is the start of the Christmas season, not the end. You know, the 12 days of Christmas and all: (12 televisions, 11 missionaries, 10 can of beer, 9 pound of poi, 8 ukelele, 7 shrimp a swimmin, 6 hula lessons, FIVE BIG FAT PIGS, 4 flower lei, 3 dried squid, 2 coconuts and one mynah bird in one papaya tree!). The 12 days don’t end until Jan 6 when Mardi Gras Season starts. By the time Mardi Gras is over, it’s spring time and we have survived.
Don’t give up during The Big Dark! I have to keep reminding myself this time of year.

I check WeatherUnderground and we are up to 8 hours and 18 minutes of daylight and tomorrow will be 49 seconds longer!! Sunrise still gets later each morning, it’s at 8:04 tomorrow, but sunset at 4:22 pm is getting later faster than the sunrise so we are still gainin’ on daylight.
BoatBabe, you are one lucky duck, I bet you have at least 4 or 5 more minutes of daylight (almost mistakenly labeled that “sunlight” - Hah!)
