This week on the classic episode of A Prairie Home Companion, we return to The Town Hall show of December 2006-. New York's Town Hall served the show’s seasonal needs almost every December. Our special guests: Jerry Douglas, the prolific resophonic guitarist and the most recorded Dobro player in history, and his band. We've got Billy Collins — former poet laureate of the United States and a Distinguished Professor of English at the City University of New York (1968–2016). Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting (Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman), the News from Lake Wobegon, and sitting in with the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, the cunning commander of catgut Andy Stein. Highlights include talk of Hanukkah and a special medley from Rich Dworsky, Billy Collins reads his ode to aging (“The Golden Years”), Jerry Douglas picks the classic “Away in a Manger” with his band, Garrison’s humorous ode called “The Waffle Song,” plus Catchup, Rhubarb, Guy Noir, a few words from Mom, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57097.htmlOnly 9 days until Christmas!!

JERRY DOUGLAS These days, when someone mentions a Dobro, Jerry Douglas immediately comes to mind. Little wonder. The 15-time Grammy winner and Country Music Association’s Musician of the Year can be heard on more than a thousand albums, including discs by Garth Brooks, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Vince Gill, and Ray Charles. Born in Warren, Ohio, Douglas developed an early interest in bluegrass. His father, a steelworker, played music, and Jerry took up the mandolin at age five. He switched to Dobro when he was 11, after seeing a Flatt & Scruggs concert featuring Dobro master Josh Graves. Before he was out of his teens, he had joined the Country Gentlemen. He has been a member of other groundbreaking bands like J.D. Crowe & the New South, Alison Krauss & Union Station, and The Earls of Leicester — and he has a thriving career as a solo artist as well. The New York Times called Douglas “Dobro’s matchless contemporary master.”
BILLY COLLINS Billy Collins was twice appointed United States poet laureate and also served as New York State poet laureate. In 2004, he was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Poetry Foundation's Mark Twain Award for humor in poetry. The poems in Questions About Angels; Picnic, Lightning; Sailing Alone Around the Room; Nine Horses; The Trouble with Poetry; Ballistics, and his other best-selling books have sparked a firestorm of interest in the art. His most recent collection of poetry is 2022’s Musical Tables: Poems.
ANDY STEIN Violinist and saxophonist Andy Stein was a regular member of Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band on A Prairie Home Companion from 1989 to 2001. He collaborated with Garrison Keillor to create the opera Mr. and Mrs. Olson. He has appeared on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman, and has performed with such artists as Itzhak Perlman, Eric Clapton, Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, and many others.

I will try to be here but am not sure since my laptop is kaput and I am limping on with this iPad. Can I possibly make it let me listen at the same time I read and post? No idea.
And I am worn out with this electronic challenge plus I spent several hours “cleaning the basement” earlier today. Really Wore me out but I had to take advantage of rare December sun. The daylight part of our “daylight basement” faces west. Have to work there in late morning to early afternoon. It’s dark by 4pm.

I'm ok - how are you all? No, the only work I do for GK anymore is when he loses a file on his laptop and calls me - it averages once or twice month. He's been out on the road doing solo, duet, and PHC 50th shows. I guess they were just at Town Hall in NYC. Sam from the old crew is about the only one left, though Janis works some east coast shows and Todd still does house sound on occasion. I took my wife to a recent Wailin' Jennys show - and sat next to Tony Axtell, former FOH guy for PHC. I've never actually seen a whole Wailin' Jennys show, so that was a treat. Heather set us up with tickets and we chatted for quite a while at intermission and afterward. Miss those ladies...

I saw the Wailin Jennys a few years ago when I was at a meeting in Omaha. They were great. And of course Heather has been on many of the shows and cruises.
Jay is going to a APHC 50th Anniversary show in Florida early next year.

It's funny - Rich Dworsky e-mailed me recently looking for a Hanukah song from an old show - I guess he wanted to pitch it to GK for the Town Hall show. He gave me the date of a repeat it had been on, but I sent him the original, which wasn't online anywhere. He asked me how I did it so fast and it's because I have a complete archive on my computer...
It's too bad - when GK's show ended, MPR didn't care too much about the archive or anything from the old show. I understand the Library of Congress may be getting it, so all is not lost.

Well that is a special treasure for sure. I have always wondered when someone has an archive, how many copies do you keep someplace else/? There are four that I know of. When we were all still working, I made three clones to keep off site, just in case. I had one, Sam had one, and Jason had one. We primarily used them to produce the repeats. Now there's a fourth that Kate Gustafson has, which will likely go to the Library of Congress.

Does GK have an archive? I guess Library of Congress is an appropriate site, kind of a relief to know that. Once in Flag staff my computer died and when I went to best buy to fix or replace it they were able to fix d some important stuff I needed from 2 computers earlier. They had to wait a couple days for the guy with biggest "institutional knowledge" to come in. I waited, he found and fixed it. Must have been the Thomas of Flag BestBuy
