This week on A Prairie Home Companion, we'll wake up in the city that never sleeps and make a brand new start of it. With one of the loveliest voices in Irish traditional music Karan Casey, plus the master of tone, taste, and timing, fiddler Stuart Duncan, and a titan of the jazz tuba Howard Johnson and Gravity, this is a show not to be missed. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, the samaritans of sole, The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, and the News from Lake Wobegon. Highlights include Garrison talking about the anniversary of John Lennon’s death plus re-imagined words to a classic and a duet of ‘In My Life’ with Karan Casey, plus a spirited version of ‘Christmas Times A Comin’’ led by Stuart Duncan, a beautiful ‘Bright Winter’s Day’ from Karan Casey, scripts featuring our talented cast for Aida, Mom, Catchup, Guy Noir and the latest news from Lake Wobegon. This show was originally broadcasted on December 9, 2006. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57099.htmlI'll be scooting out early to attend a Theatre Tallahassee performance of a clever madcap romp entitled "Every Christmas Story Ever Told.. and then some"

About tonight's performers
Karan Casey The Los Angeles Times has called Karan Casey's voice "as pure and clear as the crystal from County Waterford, where she was born." True enough. She grew up singing with her family and with the church choir, then studied voice and piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. She emigrated to New York in 1993 and enrolled at Brooklyn's Long Island University as a jazz major, but she soon returned to her roots, joining the celebrated Irish-American band Solas. In 1997, she recorded her first solo CD, Songlines, and she worked on other projects, including Paul Winter's Solstice Celebrations and the PBS documentary (and album) Africans In America. Her most recent album, Nine Apples of Gold, was released earlier this year.
Stuart Duncan Multi-instrumentalist Stuart Duncan took up fiddle at age seven. Since then, he has chalked up a career that includes two Grammys, a slew of Academy of Country Music Awards, and being named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Fiddle Player of the Year nine times. He was a founding member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band and is perennially one of Nashville’s most sought-after session musicians, performing on thousands of recordings.
Howard Johnson and Gravity Since the early 1960s, Howard Johnson has garnered acclaim as tuba soloist extraordinaire. After teaching himself to play baritone saxophone at the age of 13, he learned tuba a year later. He hit New York in 1963 and soon began working with Charles Mingus. In 1966, he started a 20-year off-and-on association with Gil Evans, and over the next four decades, he lent his talents to Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, Taj Mahal, John Lennon, B.B. King and many others. He also did a five-year stint with NBC's Saturday Night Live. In the late '70s, Johnson formed Gravity, six tubas and a rhythm section. Howard passed away in 2021 after appearing on hundreds of recordings featuring him on saxophone or tuba, both as bandleader and sideman. His performance on this show was to promote the album Testimony.
The Beatles are back and have released new music. Imagine if John Lennon were here, maybe he would re-write lyrics to his tunes. . . well, probably not, so we’ve got a humorist/host who loved doing just that. Here are his re-worked lyrics to 'Imagine.’ from this week’s classic show:
Imagine there's no smoking It's easy if you try Imagine there's no parking Between six and nine Imagine we're broadcasting Going on the air... Imagine there's no hip-hop It isn't hard to do And no long black limos Just folks like me and you Imagine crowds of tourists Walking 'round Times Square. You may say I'm a weiner But I'm not the only one There are hundreds of hot dogs Walking around in big white buns Imagine there's no littering There is a littering ban No garbage in the gutter Throw it in the can No gum on the sidewalks Or on the subway stair You may say I'm a weiner But I'm not the only one There are hundreds of hot dogs Walking around in big white buns

Hi DW! Thanks for posting.
I am really sorry your Seminoles lost last week. Even way out here on the Left Coast we agree - You was robbed!
But hey the Huskies of UW are doing great and even warming my heart. I admit, I'm an alum but was never a really enthusiastic alum. And hey, I went down to Seattle this week to seek out their high level expertise and they treated me very well and were very competent and friendly, even made it easy to stay overnight when it turned out I needed more tests the next day (instead of another round trip from Way Up North - much easier that way).

The funny part is that they didn't lose a game... they lost in the national championship picking ... it is still a mess.. and on top of that, now college football players can enter a transfer portal BEfORe the bowl games.. and decide not to play because they might get injured. Shameful what is happening to the college games now.

"In My Life" - a beautiful Beatles tune and one of everybody's favorites. I remember December 8 1980 very well. Heartbreaking day. I was sick and in the hospital, but was still able to get the news.

Have a great time at the theater. Check out my post elsewhere about what a wonderful time we (me and my daughter and daughter-in-law) had at the stage play of "White Christmas" this week. Very good choice for a holiday time - evening at the theater.

Hi Jay!
It's "mid-afternoon" but here in the Big Dark it might as well be midnight. Weoll not quite that bad, but close. And it's wet and cold at 37 degrees, we may get some snow overnight. IN the nearby mountains they actually closed Snoqualmie Pass because the snow was so heavy.

We made it through official heightened danger of storms; we can have a real bummer weekend without wind hitting hurricane speed.

did I mention to you, doc, that January 11 is the PHC date in Nashville? Of course, I don't know if there are any tickets left.

I don't think you said anything to me about a show Jan 11 in Nashville. I know he's doing quite a few for this 50th anniversary year. Were you thinking of going to Nashville? There are always tickets available for almost any show, if not on the web site, then check out StubHub or similar secondary markets. There are a few tips to keep in mind about such secondary market purchases but I've had pretty good luck with them for "sold out" shows.

I had been thinking about it. There is also a lot going on down here in terms of entertainment. But January is the Florida Storytelling festival, out in Mt Dora, several good shows at the Orange Blossom Opry. And then there is Azalea Storytelling Festival in March up in LaGrange. That one is a definite "yes"!.

Although I was able to get away for my reunion and the Esalen trip last June, I am not so sure about current travel. I am real tired of sitting around home, not getting out much, but it appears to be necessary for the time being. Maybe more trips to Seattle will fill the bill for a while, so long as it's for music, theater, museums, etc - some kind of fun. Doc appointments and medical procedures don't count.

I don't like that story of "It's probably benign but let's get more tests." Can't blame Duane and Mom for getting into a "discussion" about it.

And I don't think doctors and Hospitals/Surgical Centers give out bumper stickers or things you can slap on your back window.

No but the Hutch does send out requests for charitable donations - those are flooding the mailbox this time of year.

Oh yeah, canceled checks, I vaguely remember those. I've just been relieved I have had IRS demands for proof of a payment recently. I don't know if they accept a computer printout as adequate "proof."
And it's end of the show, went by fast probably because I am tired from all the work I did earlier today. I've enjoyed the company Jay, and hope DW and his sweetie are enjoying their show.
Y'all have a great week!

I had to mail a check to one of my KY in-laws today. It sure felt weird putting on the stamp and return address sticker, sealing the envelope, etc. Charitable organizations need a little different give-away than ROA labels these days. Anyway, take care, have a great week!
