This week we revisit a show from the Fitzgerald Theater from the fall of 2006 (October 28). We’re carving blue-ribbon pumpkins and drinking hot spiced cider. Our very special guests: Queen of the Blues Bonnie Raitt and firecrackers of the Canadian prairie The Wailin’ Jennys. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Tom Keith. Manhattan maestro Andy Stein is sitting in with the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band. And watch for the guy in a tuxedo and red sneakers handing out the candy. Highlights include The Wailin’ Jennys’ take on “Bright Morning Stars” and “Glory Bound”; Bonnie Raitt kicking it on “Thing Called Love” and the Sippie Wallace classic “Women Be Wise”; Tim Russell and the “Vampire Blues”; talk about the fall season, Bush, and Martin Luther; plus, Catchup, a few Halloween-inspired sketches, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57111.htmlI won't be around at the start of the show but may be able to tune in near the end!

Bonnie Raitt
Minnesota has a claim to fame in music legend Bonnie Raitt's extraordinary career: Her first album was recorded in the Twin Cities suburb of Minnetonka and produced by Minneapolis blues stalwart Willie Murphy. Born to a musical family (she’s the daughter of celebrated Broadway singer John Raitt and pianist/singer Marge Goddard), Raitt grew up in Los Angeles. Her creative journey began the Christmas she was eight, when she got her first guitar. In her teens, she heard the album Blues at Newport 1963. “That one record changed my life,” she says. By the late ’60s, as a Harvard/Radcliffe student majoring in African studies, she was making the rounds of Cambridge coffeehouses. After three years, she quit college to commit herself full-time to music. Soon she was opening for the likes of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son House, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker. These days, Raitt can claim legions of fans, stacks of recordings, and a host of awards, including thirteen Grammys and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She continues to record and tour.
The Wailin’ Jennys
When three solo performers with powerful voices joined forces for a one-time gig in 2002, everything changed. The collaboration was a huge success, surprising everyone, including The Wailin’ Jennys. Soon the ad hoc trio was on tour, and within a few weeks the word was out: People were calling them “a bona fide Canadian sensation.” Writing in the Sydney [Australia] Morning Herald, one music critic said, “This is about as good as contemporary folk gets.” Closer to home, a Winnipeg Free Press reporter proclaimed that the group’s harmony singing has “the ability to send shivers up your spine.” Those tight harmonies have won over countless fans and loads of awards.
And here’s a message from the Fearmonger’s Shoppe for this Halloween season. Fearmonger’s — serving all your phobia needs since 1954.
Just remember to keep your thermostat turned low. Spiders slow down quite a bit around 58 degrees. So do rattlesnakes. (SLOW RATTLE) Of course your bed may get warm once you crawl into it, so make sure you take a baseball bat before you get in and (WHACKS OF BAT ON SOFT MATTRESS) make sure there aren't snakes under the covers. Then take out your duct tape (SFX) and use it to close off the little gap under the doors (TAPING) where someone could insert a hose and pump poison gas into the room. (TAPING) And any cracks in the windows. And then load your gun and put it by the bed. (SFX) And put the carpet tacks around on the floor by your bed so if intruders come in you'll hear them yell. And now lie quietly on your back. (HEART POUNDING) With your helmet on. And go to sleep. All you have to worry about is carbon monoxide. That’s all. (HEART POUNDING) Did you check the carbon monoxide alarm? Better get up and do that. First look out for the —(YELPS OF PAIN)

Also from Thomas,
Well....
Believe it or not, not only do we have Bonnie Raitt and her band, plus the Wailin Jennys, but GK has hired - get this - a mime to come out at various points in the show and "undulate". You all will have to tell me how that looks on radio...
;-)
LOL. Not quite sure how this is going to work... The plan is for her (the mime) to come out at three points - during the warm up, during Powdermilk, and during greetings - this to include some costume changes as well... She's going to "slither" up from under the stage and eventually work her way to GK. During greetings, she's supposed to climb him and find something in his jacket pocket, then slip away. She has a stretchy black (what I would call a) cat suit reminiscent of Momenchance, and this bright orange dress-like thing straight out of Wonderland.
We're also going to have a skeleton drop down at some point and hand Garrison a piece of paper...
So, if you all hear the crowd react to something odd, or nothing in particular, there's your clue.
Talk to you later.
P.S. Bonnie Raitt is SO excited to be here - she's listened to the show forever and will even show up in Guy Noir. A very nice lady...

Hey, doc. Running a half-day of errands sounds pretty good. Of course, I can make one errand take up half a day. It helps if everything is fairly close together; you don't want to spend a half day driving.

I did have to go downtown and the north side of town, but it's not that big of a town and every stop was in town, as opposed to Seattle or Shoreline or Marysville or Canada - all longer trips though still "nearby."

I've decided not to worry any more about Life's Persistent Questions. I have a strategy now and I am avoiding questions.
But I appreciate Guy Noir's attention to the matter of persistent questions.

Sorry, I went over to the concert schedule for a while. PHC will be in West Palm in February. I'm getting a little itchy.

What is your strategy? I looked up your yoga master Schiffman. He has a lot of his stuff on-line for free now. It would certainly help to concentrate and focus better.

Are they doing a show with guest performers or is GK doing a solo show? Or does he have one co-singer, he's done that frequently recently.
This part sounds like they could bust into "Monster Mash" any second now.

Are those online items "In memoriam"? David died a few years ago - a real loss. Stan Grof and Fritz Capra and Al Huang are still up and at 'em.
My strategy is to downsize remaining junk here, sell the house and then move back to our cottage in the Blue Ridge. 6 - 12 month estimated timeline. I'd really like to get my surgery and stuff done here but still ideally move before the great summer weather that begins July 5. I may have to flex on the latter.

I didn't notice any "In Memoriam" but I was kind of breezing through it. It wasn't a sampler, they were full courses. There were some ladys instructing as well.
I'm enjoying Bonnie Raitt; it's been a long time since I've heard her.

Today was the annual Monarch Butterfly Festival at the St. Mark's National Wildlife Refuge. We left at 6 am and got down in time to watch the sunrise over the marsh and Gulf waters. Then we wandered around and saw a few butterflys and some birds. The main migration hasn't happened yet, but my colleagues at the Wildlife agency were down with nets capturing monarchs so that they could show the public (mainly kids) these butterflys and how they are tagged and released.

Hey, dw. Sounds like a good day. They'd rather tag those butterflies than brand 'em?

Hey, dw. Sounds like a good day. They'd rather tag those butterflies than brand 'em? It's amazing they can put a tiny little sticky dot on their wing, with some Identification info... and those sticky dots stay on and little tagged butterflies can be seen in other places and the data gets collected ,, and scientists are both happy and baffled.

How are the Monarchs holding up? I know they were taking a beating with loss of habitat, in Mexico as well as the US.

How are the Monarchs holding up? I know they were taking a beating with loss of habitat, in Mexico as well as the US. Some folks want them listed on the Endangered Species List... others say that there is no need to do that... that they are just insects who go up and down in population naturally. I think the verdict is one of those complicated situations, we know that they have less habitat and more challenges, but they do seem to just keep showing up year after year, and sometimes more and sometimes less. Today was a less day, but the weather is still too warm... now this coming week we may hit the 30's and after that, those butterflies are motivated to fly on south!

Hi dw! I remember loving the monarch migration when we lived in California. Somewhere in all the family photos albums there are pictures of my covered with monarch butterflies. If you're a kid that will sit still, dozens will land on you!
We are having a gorgeous sunny day today but it is only 49 degrees. My years in Denver taught me that as long as it is sunny and someplace above zero, I will not complain about the cold. But I complain plenty about The Big Dark, more every year until eventually we have to move away again.

I wish the Wailin' Jennys would come near us on tour. I saw them in Omaha, NE years ago when I just happened to be there and saw them in a cool small venue. But I think they haven't toured too much as a group in recent years. Heather Massey has done numerous cruises with APHC and solo shows on tour with GK. I wish they would tour more, and at least a stop or two in our vicinity.

I'm not sure what the butterflies were, not Monarch, for sure. But one year in the late winter/early Spring in Jensen Beach we saw some gang of yellow butterflies just keep going and going North. It took the whole flight a while to go by. Of course my favorites were the robins that would stop and get drunk from the eucalyptus berries on their way north.

My Florida version of the "Big Dark" is a minor inconvenience in the mornings when I am trying to serve food to the homeless and it is so dark they cannot see what we have on our table, so I turn on my phone flashlight and make my pitch... we have that for about 20 minutes now, a bit longer each time.. but come a week from now, the time will change and it will be light for our time. Funny thing how we would rather conform to a clock than conform to the sun cycle...

Yeah. they had that Sulfer shade of yellow. It was neat seeing so many different migrations. We saw the vultures arrive one year. It was a Sunday afternoon, we had a game on. Our living room picture window faced north and every so often one would pop down out of the clouds.
