Listen to the October 4, 2003 show again: This classic was performed live from St. Paul at the Fitzgerald Theater, with bayou piano queen Marcia Ball as our musical guest. Jearlyn Steele brought her vocal and thespian talents to the stage. Barb and Jim were transfixed by a new gated community, Guy Noir helped a local rapper find her car, and “George Bush” made another appearance on our show. Highlights include a few duets by Garrison and Jearlyn Steele, including “In the Garden.” From Peter Ostroushko, “Radke’s Reel,” an ode about baseball and Twins pitcher Brad Radke, plus the beautiful “When the Last Morning Glory Blooms.” There’s a rocking version of “So Many Rivers to Cross” and “Give Me a Chance” from Marcia Ball, plus Duct Tape, Guy Noir, and the News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57521.html

Marcia Ball Over a five-decade career, Texas-born, Louisiana-raised Marcia Ball has amassed a huge following with her infectious, intelligent, emotional brand of Southern boogie, rollicking roadhouse blues, and heartfelt ballads. In 2010, she was inducted into the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame; in 2012, into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. She has appeared in several movies and television specials and continues to record and tour the country spreading the blues.
Jearlyn Steele Growing up in Indiana, Jearlyn Steele sang with her siblings as The Steele Children. One by one, they moved to Minnesota and started singing together again. Now music is the family business. Jearlyn also hosts Steele Talkin’, a Sunday-night radio show that originates on WCCO in Minneapolis.
Peter Ostroushko Mandolinist, composer, arranger Peter Ostroushko, who made his first Prairie Home Companion appearance in 1974, grew up listening to tunes played at family get-togethers in the Ukrainian community of northeast Minneapolis. It’s the music that provides the basis for many of his compositions — works that have been performed by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, among others. Peter won an Emmy for the score of Minnesota: A History of the Land (Twin Cities Public Television). Peter passed away in 2021, and the compilation below featured many of his live performances over the years on A Prairie Home Companion.

This week’s classic show features Garrison’s memorable song about Republicans. And being that the House of Representatives has imploded over which Republican should be in charge and everyone is already concerned about NEXT YEAR's election season, it seems ironic that we get to refresh ourselves with GK's words from 2003? If you are half of the population that enjoys this bit of satire, the sheet music (on the internet) is available so you can play it for all your friends.
We’re all Republicans now We’ve all come around somehow He’s not all that bright But his heart is right We’re all Republicans now Maybe you think we are nuts. But we believe in tax cuts. Cut ’em and cut ’em and then cut some more, If you pay five percent, then you ought to pay four. If you pay four percent, let’s make it three. We’ll give you a discount like you wouldn’t believe. We’re Republicans, We’re Republicans, We’re all Republicans now.

Hey, guys. Think I'm going to pass tonight. We had a tree cut down this week, and just finished picking up and hauling the pieces this morning, had a dulcimer practice this afternoon. I'm whipped. Enjoy the show!

Hey dw! Just tuning in 3 - 4 minutes late but I am here.
Being a "New Orleans homie" I've always liked Marcia Ball, and of course the Steeles are always good.

"The Garden" - a beautiful song, and I've seen GK perform this with the Steeles on several occasions. Lovely.

The "Inner Republican" is especially relevant today ... I just learned that Governor Desantis paid $14,000 per person to fly 270 Floridians from Isreal (the war torn part I would think?) Taxpayer dollars are like play money to this administration.

Watching WVU vs Oklahoma State, sound off. WVU just kicked a field goal to tie 27 - 27. I'd have preferred a TD. We're still Mountaineers, it gets in your blood if you've lived there.

Taxpayer dollars are like play money to this administration. Won't those civilians have to pay the money back? That's what the US feds do when they rescue civilian people in tourist type trouble, which I understand was the situation with the Floridians. Most people I know of that are trying to get out of Israel ( Americans, sometimes dual citizens, other westerners) are buying tix from the few non-US airlines that will fly from Tel Aviv to Middle East, Asia or Europe, where they connect to the US - out of their own pockets. It is not easy.

My husband was born and raised in upstate NY so when people ask him/us "Where are you from?" he just rolls his eyes. I keep pretty good track of all the places we've lived because it's the military lifestyle I grew up with, then continued in my my own educational and professional career.
Plus I've always sought out fun & adventures - had lots of both over the years. Like Ferris Bueller said "Life moves pretty fast so if you don't stop and look around you might miss something." I just pay attention and grab the opportunity when it presents itself - wherever, whomever.

Did you know that today (October 21) is known as "Back To The Future Day"? Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to October 21, 2015 in the first movie! Apparently some folks actually get together on this date and rewatch the movies and enjoy the whole concept again. Hard to believe that the first movie was way back in 1985!!

Duct tape and WD 40 - they cure most everyday problems, and then Coca-Cola for internal ailments or turpentine for external ones, that's what my grandma always said.

Oh this is a great tune also - one that GK and Co always did during the post-show singalong, which could go on for hours at Tanglewood. If Jay were here, he'd comment on those memories I'm sure. We went to several of those Tanglewood shows APHC did.

I saw the Shirelles (who originally sang this tune back in the 60's) perform at one of those "Teen Cavalcade" shows where they had several groups travel together for shows - one city after the other, different night, different town.
I think I saw them Dick and DeeDee, Gene Pitney, Righteous Brothers, several others. Looking back, it was probably more than one of those group shows, but they were all on Oahu when we lived in Hawaii.

BTW, in football news, WVU totally folded and lost the game big time. But looking at the schedule I see that Duke is playing at FSU in a few minutes. Right in your neighborhood!
We were more or less UF fans in the Florida contingency of our family, but all the military moves, we didn't care all that much much about particular college football teams. Being a military brat is a weird way to grow up.

That's the truth. I just say that "It's a good thing I don't look as old as I feel some days" (usually after working all night in the hospital). But I'm old and have packed a lot in my life, no regrets!

My wife had to tell me that this is an Edvard Grieg melody.. a famous norwegian composer! She has one of his albums.
