It’s an October spectacular (October 10, 2009) from the Fitzgerald Theater, with special guest Neko Case, who will conjure up a storm of song with her elemental voice and genre-meshing musical style. Singer Connie Evingson will join the fun as well, along with singers Andra Suchy and Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele. The Royal Academy of Radio Actors (Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and sound-effects man Mr. Tom Keith) is on hand, plus the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band. And of course, there’s News from Lake Wobegon. Highlights include “Ain’t Nobody’s Fault But My Own” from Pat Donohue and the band, plus “Middle Cyclone” and “People Got a Lot of Nerve” from Neko. Hear a rocking version of “Baby, I Love You” from the Steele sisters, a duet or two featuring Andra alongside Garrison, words from Powdermilk, and so much more. www.prairiehome.org/shows/56751.html

Neko Case
On her way to becoming a singer-songwriter, Neko Case worked in a supermarket meat department, unloaded trucks for UPS, and cooked in restaurants. Lucky for her myriad fans, this former art student settled on a life in music. Many know Case from her work with Canadian indie rock band The New Pornographers, whose members make a guest appearance on her 2009 album, Middle Cyclone.
Connie Evingson
When Twin Cities jazz singer Connie Evingson was a kid, she loved listening to her dad's record collection — Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee. Then she grew up to be a top-flight artist in her own right, known for her work with Moore By Four and her solo appearances on concert and club stages worldwide. She created Fever, A Tribute to Peggy Lee, which she has performed coast to coast. She continues to record and perform in and around the Twin Cities.
Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele
Growing up in Indiana, Jearlyn Steele sang with her siblings as The Steele Children. One by one, they moved to Minnesota and started singing together again. Now music is the family business. Jearlyn also hosts Steele Talkin’, a Sunday-night radio show that originates on WCCO in Minneapolis. In the 1980s, Jevetta Steele — along with her family group, The Steeles — toured the world in the musical The Gospel at Colonus. The show had another successful run at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in 2010. And many remember Jevetta’s Academy Award-nominated performance of “Calling You,” from the film Baghdad Café.
Andra Suchy
Andra Suchy spent her childhood on a farm near Mandan, North Dakota, the daughter of two talented singers. By the time she was in grade school, she was traveling around, doing concerts and festivals with her family. Andra continues to perform in the Twin Cities area.

My plan is to be here tomorrow afternoon for the Show, "just like the old days."
I think it's a nice ritual - run around doing tasks in the morning so that by 3 pm I'm ready for a break and the how is just right.

Hi Jay and BoatBabe too!
We saw Neko Case play at the Gorge a couple years ago - she opened for Brandi Carlile that night. This show is quite a bit earlier, so I guess it took years for her to become "an overnight sensation."
I did always like this tune "Walk Away Renee"

I seem to recognize Neko Case's face, but can't come up with one of her songs.

Got the insurance guy straightened out, DocK? I think so, I hope so. The NC house sustained damage in a recent storm, including a roof leak, which caused damage to the electrical. Mark & Lori, our caretakers, got right on it, began fixing the basics such as patching the leak to prevent further damage, calling in an electrician who has made sure the electric is cut off so the place doesn't burn down. Which it's lucky hadn't happened already. Now the inspector and the adjuster need to get in and take a look. We have excellent insurance coverage through USAA so it should all be covered. And to the extent allowed, we'll have reliable local people do the repairs - a fraction of the price in western NC compared to what it costs elsewhere, and I like keeping business local with qualified people. USAA is usually very member-friendly, as it is a mutual company just seeking good care for the members, not profits for the shareholders (or government grifters). A lot better than the US government is doing for active duty folks - they were lucky to get paid yesterday for protecting our nation, because Congress can't do their job of approving a budget. I was supposed to be there myself, but I was too sick, had to head back to the west coast right after the wedding.

I don't remember specifics either, just that Neko was very good in her opening-the-show performance. But being on stage at the Gorge with Brandi is a bid deal, though Brandi always tries to help out the next generation along in the industry just like Dave Matthews and others did for her.

This morning I watched Wales play Argentina in the Rugby World Cup - My Boss and his family were attending in Europe. The Score was Wales 17 - Argentina 12 (If you recall my Boss is Welsh.) In just a few minutes, Argentina scored a try, and the match ended with Argentina winning 17-29, and Wales was knocked out of the World Cup.
Usually on an autumn Saturday afternoon/night, the Boss and his family would be at Husky Stadium watching football.
Somethings work out. Some don't.
