About the guests:
Old Crow Medicine Show With a little luck and a whole lot of talent, Old Crow Medicine Show went from playing their slash-and-burn brand of old-time music on the streets of Boone, North Carolina, to bringing down the house at the Grand Ole Opry. Now based in Nashville, these Grammy winners and Grand Ole Opry inductees are bringing audiences to their feet coast to coast and then some.
The band for this broadcast: Critter Fuqua, Kevin Hayes, Morgan Jahnig, Gill Landry, Chance McCoy, Ketch Secor, and Cory Younts.
Butch Thompson For 12 years of his five-plus-decade career, Butch Thompson was the house pianist on A Prairie Home Companion, dating back to the show’s second broadcast in July 1974. As a soloist, he earned a worldwide reputation as a master of ragtime, stride, and classic jazz piano. Described by Jazz Journal International as “the premier player in traditional jazz today,” Thompson also performed with his well-known trio, his eight-piece New Orleans Jazz Originals, and with symphony orchestras, including the Hartford Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Cairo (Egypt) Symphony. Butch passed away in 2022.
MARIA JETTE Versatile soprano Maria Jette can sing dozens of operatic roles. She also performs pop songs, chamber music, oratorio, and show tunes. She has appeared with orchestras nationwide, including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, New York Chamber Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra. Among her recordings are two albums of P.G. Wodehouse songs, with pianist/accordionist Dan Chouinard: In Our Little Paradise: Songs of P.G. Wodehouse and The Siren’s Song: Wodehouse & Kern on Broadway.

Looks like a good show, and I may not have been there if it was storytelling weekend. If it wasn't storytelling I may have been at the live show in St. Paul because sometime around that year I did attend the season opening show with the meatloaf dinner and street dance.
I couldn't go to story telling this weekend, so I will tune into the show. Jay is at storytelling and he hasn't been around much anyway lately so I doubt he'll be seeing us on the radio this week.

I have a conflict with a certain football team playing on TV so will join you as soon as that is finished!

Oh and check the historical record for October 4, 2008, where indeed you and Jay were at storytelling while others munched on the meat loaf!

Hi dw! Then I think that wasn't the year when I went to St Paul. I traveled alone but met up with slb2 and gailkate & JayStar and their spouses. That was the only time I went to the opening show and it was a good one.
That was a good year - I went to Ghana in January, then Afghanistan in the spring (all were medical aid trips) and to Israel in November. Israel and the Palestinians were involved with increased hostilities that culminated in "incursions" into Gaza before Obama took over from W in January. I went to a silent witness peace protest at the Erez crossing into Gaza with Maread Maguire (1977 Nobel Peace prize winner for her peace work in Northern Ireland). We were fired upon by rockets aimed at nearby Ashkelon but it was not nearly like the current situation and we were never really in any danger.
Obviously all the efforts at peacemaking have still failed but the current war looks really bad. I fear for the lives of my friends and colleagues.

Butch sounds great, as always. I still love listening to his old CDs. He is much missed.
Great memories of Butch on the APHC cruises. When he did a solo performance I'd sit at the piano and take notes on each song he played and where/who it came from. Lots of ragtime and old New Orleans tunes.

I have always liked OCMS, seem them many times at APHC shows or MerleFest in NC. But last time I saw them, maybe a year or two ago at MerleFest I was disappointed.
They opened with some bland generic "Hello North Carolina" and were all glamor glitz and high-tech. This was at MerleFest where they got their start after Doc Watson ( who founded MerleFest in honor of his deceased son Merle) found them busking the streets in Boone, NC.

The Seminoles won, but there were a few moments when it seemed they were not doing what needed to be done! Now they have won 5 straight games and are looking good to keep up the hard work!

You do have to wonder if groups that have been around for a while start to get advice they need to "change things up". We got to see Chicago last night here in Tally and they still have 3 of the founding members playing with the group. They played their big hits, and had a good time, audience singing along. It was a lovely evening and I was surprised that I had not actually listened to their music in some time, but the words still came out!

That final scored looked like the Seminoles won big time.
When Amber was at WVU she hated the Hokies but seems to have calmed down since graduation, but it's never tragic to her if Tech loses. Me - I consider Virginia my home state but about half my VCU med school class went to Tech, most of the rest to UVA. At MCV-VCU, UVA was our major comepetition but I have to say that although it has a great reputation, I just don't see how you can get a great medical education in a tiny town like Charlottesville. But nothing personal, just that at the time there were only 2 medical schools in the state, so most Virginians went to one or the other to get their medical education.

Yeah, since they moved to Nashville, OCMS has changed but then they are still currently popular, not just "golden oldies" like Chicago. I had a similar experience with Elton John. I had never been a big fan but his tunes were always background music for a couple of decades of my life. But Howard and I went to see his show in Las Vegas when I was there for a medical meeting and was very importance with his high quality showmanship, great songs and singing, and found I remembered much more than I thought. We really enjoyed that show. That trip we saw Elton John (my choice), Don Rickles (Howard's choice) and "Eau" a Cirque du Soleil show we both wanted to see. Good trip all around.

GK has been putting up some interesting stuff on Facebook and his Blog. He genuinely seems to be happy about his tour, enjoying life, and giving out recommendations on what to focus on when one gets up in the years. Sometimes it seems that people arrive at a place too late in life to really enjoy it, but if his writing is a true reflection, seems like he is very satisfied with things.

I've found that ironic, given how generally gloomy he has previously been for many years.

Yeah, these old show broadcasts are seeming older and older. That's of course because they are older, and so are we! At least we are on what is usually considered the good side of the grass.
