This week, we trek out west to Montana, land of ponderosa pines, blackspotted cutthroat trout, and grizzly gears the size of compact cars. We'll be broadcasting live from the University of Montana's Adams Center, in Missoula, featuring Montana singer-songwriter Stephanie Davis, acoustic duo Growling Old Men, singer Prudence Johnson, and sitting in with the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, Andy Stein and Peter Ostroushko. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman. Join us this Saturday from Big Sky Country, where we'll turn the horses loose, “... ’cause you can’t ride ’em in the chute!” Highlights include the two Peter Ostroushko favorites, “Coming Down from Red Lodge” and “Montana”; a Rolling Stones sing-along; “Sarah Hogan” and “Madison Brown” from the Growling Old Men; Stephanie Davis and Prudence Johnson with their take on “Hittin’ the Trail Tonight”; plus a Radio Rodeo, Ketchup, the Cowboys, Guy Noir, and the News from Lake Wobegon. Show performed on September 30, 2006 www.prairiehome.org/shows/57119.html

About tonight's guests:
The Growling Old Men
John Lowell (guitar) and Ben Winship (mandolin), with Dave Thompson (bass), call themselves Growling Old Men — taking their name from the old-time fiddle tune “Growling Old Man, Grumbling Old Woman.” They’ve been key players in the Montana/Idaho music scene for a couple of decades. Winship, who took second place in the 1989 National Mandolin Championships, was a founding member of the bluegrass band Loose Ties. Lowell is a veteran of some of the region’s best bluegrass groups, including Wheel Hoss and Deep River. The three currently work together in Kane’s River, described by one reviewer as “among the brightest of a new generation of bluegrass bands.”
Stephanie Davis
In a circa 1900 one-room homestead cabin — a building on her ranch in south-central Montana — Stephanie Davis composed and recorded songs that reflected her life in Big Sky Country. Back when, she spent a couple of years in Nashville, writing songs for the likes of Garth Brooks, Roger Whittaker, Martina McBride and Shelby Lynne. But there's no place like her home state of Montana—where her family has lived for four generations—and Stephanie is the first to tell you, daily ranch life provides constant inspiration. She still writes and records, now from her home in Austin, Texas.
Prudence Johnson
That silky alto and striking style—you’d expect to find Prudence Johnson singing at a high-tone nightspot. And you might. But be it a concert hall, the silver screen, a little jazz club or A Prairie Home Companion, Pru is the perfect complement. Her dozen-plus album releases include Little Dreamer, a collection of international lullabies, Moon Country, which features the music of Hoagy Carmichael, and S’Gershwin, a collaboration with pianist Dan Chouinard.

When we moved back from NC to WA we took I-90 most of the way and I think it was Bozeman, MT that we so nice we decided to stay there an extra night/day. Howard said "Maybe it would be nice to live here," but then I reminded him that it gets very cold in the winter, and we were there in the summer. He had decided that Denver and even Flagstaff were too cold, so Montana just wasn't a wise choice

Road kill cook-off festivals and weekends were popular in West Virginia, not quite as well attended as the Rattlesnake Shoot and Beer Weekend, for which we staffed up in the emergency room.

I'm tuned in and multitasking, as usual for Saturday afternoon when I am not traveling. Welcome aboard Doc. So have you recovered from your adventure back East...? Yes the wedding itself was terrific, everything went very smoothly, weather was perfect. The cross country air travel had a few snafus as usual, and I was in the midst of an MS relapse but we made it. However I was not up to a road trip down to NC to attend storytelling so I came back to WA with Howard and the girls and I'm resting at home. Have a brain MRI scheduled, bunch of other tests. However - Storytelling will have a camera in one of the tents all day Friday and it will be broadcast live for free! Don't miss it!

Speaking of weddings, tomorrow is our 2nd anniversary. My lovely wife has planned a surprise trip, so I have been told how to pack and after we finish our activities tomorrow we will hit the road and stay a couple of nights someplace south of here.

I was trying to post a photo from the wedding but cannot unravel the complexities of Apple iPhone + HP laptop. I don't like having everything in my life on Apple

Congratulations - Have fun! I was trying to post a photo from the wedding but cannot unravel the complexities of Apple iPhone + HP laptop. I don't like having everything in my life on Apple I have coached my wife to just send a pic from her I phone to her own email, then she can open up the email on her Windows based computer and take the photo wherever she likes

For complex reasons I don't understand, I've tried that and it doesn't work. It should but even after spending an hour with the help desk at Geek Squad and my son at my side (he is more tech savvy than I) we kept getting obscure messages about systemic problem.
I can email the photos to the kids and they can email (not phone text) them to me and THEN I get them in my inbox and can post.
Did your daughter get her travel plans arranged? I thought of asking Spencer and Jaemin while we were at the wedding - Jaemin is a flight attendant for a large airline and both are expert at manipulating flight data, though they rarely pay cash for flights. They use employee and buddy passes.

While she has not sent an itinerary, i think she may have routed to MCO I thought that was likely work out best - there are more airlines serving the route and the rates are apt to be more competitive. From B'ham, flights to almost everywhere connect in Seattle and are much more expensive than direct or non-stop from Seattle by $300- $500 on a base fare of $500 - $600. I take the shuttle bus to SEA ($99, 2 hours) as parking my own car at SEA is also pricey. I could hire a limo for about the same. But you never can be sure - I always check B'ham to Johnson City for storytelling instead of just to Charlotte, just in case. Every once in a while it's only $50 more and more convenient if I don't plan to stop by our house. But if she's coming all the way from Korea, go ahead and drive the 4 hours!

Often I'll spend the night at an airport hotel on either the inbound or outbound in order to avoid awful schedules with travel through (notoriously terrible) Seattle traffic. And now My daughter lives near the SEA airport, but if I stay with them, it's an air mattress. Sometimes I'll still go with the hotel.
