This weeks rebroadcast of a rebroadcast will take a gamble and travel back to October 9, 1999, for a show from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Quintessential New York folksinger Dave Van Ronk brought his guitar and his immediately recognizable voice for “Jelly, Jelly, Jelly” and “Where Were You Last Night?”; Gillian Welch and David Rawlings sang their soon-to-be classic “Time (The Revelator)” and delivered a performance of Lefty Frizzell’s “That’s the Way Love Goes”; and Geoff Muldaur (master of American blues, jazz, roots, and more) stopped by with “Drop Down Mama” and “Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good to You?” Plus: Rainbow Motor Oil and the Rainbow Family of Automotive Products, presented our Royal Academy of Radio Actors in “The Story of Bob, a Young Artist,” a look at why men go deer hunting, and The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band played the “Garbage Man Blues,” featuring Andy Stein’s ferocious fiddle. In Lake Wobegon, Daryl and Marilyn Tollerud reminisced about the early years of their courtship. www.prairiehome.org/shows/52940.html

Gillian Welch: I remember this show very well. It was the first time I'd ever met Dave Van Ronk, and he was as advertised ... tweed coat devoid of any shape, paperback protruding from hip pocket, voice simultaneously graveled and gilded by uncountable packs of cigarettes. We hit it off immediately. My partner, David Rawlings, and I were generously allowed to play our new song, "Revelator," which had not been recorded yet. Then, we dedicated a Lefty Frizzell love song to our A&R man, Paul Kremen, whose wedding we were supposed to be singing at but were missing at his insistence that we must put "show business first." I believe it's the only time we ever performed that song.
about the performers:
DAVE VAN RONK Dave Van Ronk is a musician whose versatility defies pigeon-holing. As a teenager in Brooklyn, he played tenor banjo in a group called the Brute Force Jazz Band before switching to guitar and developing a style that combined blues, jazz and folk music. After moving to Greenwich Village, he was encouraged by Odetta to pursue music as a profession. From his start in the folk boom of the 1960s, to jug band music and cabaret theater, from ragtime guitar arrangements of Jelly Roll Morton, to covers of Tom Waits and Paul Simon tunes, he's done it all. Now, after nearly 40 years, he is doing the best work of his career, as his Grammy nomination for his latest CD, From ... Another Time and Place, and his 1997 ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award confirm. With two dozen albums to his credit, the gravelly-voiced guitarist has a vast repertoire of over 300 songs from which to choose. Still a resident of Greenwich Village, Van Ronk teaches guitar and tours steadily, playing everywhere from intimate clubs to international festivals.
GILLIAN WELCH In the early 1990s, Gillian Welch met Dave Rawlings at the Berklee College of Music in Boston while the two were students waiting to audition for the country-band class. Over the past two decades, they have carved out a highly successful career, with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association and recordings that include Welch's Grammy-nominated The Harrow & The Harvest and the Dave Rawlings Machine release Nashville Obsolete (Acony Records).
GEOFF MULDAUR "There are only three white blues singers," Richard Thompson once said, "and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them." Once you hear Muldaur's otherworldly voice, you know what he meant. He was a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and Paul Butterfield's Better Days group, and he has collaborated with Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Jerry Garcia and many other notables. An Emmy-winning composer of scores for television and film, Muldaur's solo recordings include Beautiful Isle of Somewhere (HighTone Records).

I should be here, no specific plans for the day. Still recovering from my epic trip to "Seattle" last week; it involved being rear-ended on the interstate. I was not injured and my car had only minimal damage, remains driveable so I completed my assigned tasks for the day - meeting friends for lunch in Lacey, then picking up Dream Dinners on the way home. Cooking dinner is not a challenge for the next few weeks.
Show looks good - I remember Dave van Ronk quite well from those 1960's days in Greenwich Village, and Gillian Welch from numerous appearances at MerleFest. IIRC, she got a big start at MerleFest when she won the Chris Austin Songwriting contest.
Geoff Muldaur and his ex-wife Maria Muldaur were part of that same Village scene. Those were the days weren't they? Or maybe you had to be there, dunno. Bug influence on me that's for sure, followed by a couple-three years in NOLA, also an influential place.

So you just enjoy new experiences so much you had to have a rear end collision on the interstate? Well it wasn't my decision. The traffic was stop-and-go, which it always is in Seattle, so the other driver should have been paying better attention. She was OK but her car appeared badly damaged; I drove off once the formalities were over, she did not. My insurance has determined I am not at fault, my car has minimal damage, and both drivers are OK. So I guess overall we're lucky. So now I'm all tuned in to The Show. But first I had to step out with helping Howard on preparing the Al Pastor Pork Tenderloin Street Tacos Dream Dinner. He decided he had to have dinner (or maybe lunch?) right now at 3 pm, though I had planned to cook dinner after the show. Oh well.

Hey, guys. I'm wore out. Had dulcimer practice this afternoon and I can't spend anymore time in a straight back chair. And next Saturday I'll be in KY for Sizemore-Shaeppard reunion. So everyone take care, try to stay cool.

My favorite Gillian Welch song is from "O Brother Where Art Thou" and is a triple play with EmmyLou Harris and Alison Kraus called "Didn;t Leave Nobody But the Baby". I think perhaps it was the visual scene of the sirens distracting the escaped convicts in the River that just seemed to stick with the lyrics and make the whole scene click in my mind!

Gillian and David sure sounded great on "The Revelator," great tune.
The tacos come with a pineapple salsa and I am not sure what else Howard is fixing with it. I'm wondering if we have any cole slaw left, otherwise I'm undecided yet.
Oh boy, do not believe anything you may hear about brain surgery, from GK or anyone else. Whenever the doctor's office asks about pain on the scale of 1 - 10, I consider brain surgery the worst at level of 10 the worst I ever had, and then work down from there. Natural childbirth comes in at 8.

i have a great time researching these artists and chasing rabbits .... I just found out that Dave Van Ronk was going to record, "The house of the rising sun" way back in 1962 when Bob Dylan came in and broke the news that he had just recorded Dave's version for his new album... of course it was a hit when the Animals released it later in 1964. But according to Wikepedia, the origins may extend way back into the late 1800's and early 1900's. I am convinced that there is hardly ever anything completely new.. just variations on stuff that has already been around..

Hey Doc, in your spare time, take a look at this up and coming artist from Kentucky... natmyers.bandcamp.com/music He is half Korean and half American.. heard his interview on the NPR Show Hear and Now.. this week. Very interesting how so much of our world is becoming so blended.. and yet some politicians are trying to keep the white race pure (in my humble opinion). Ron Desantis and his cronies in the Florida Legislature have confused teachers so much here in Florida and this week the Florida Board of Education approved standards for Black History in Florida where the instructional goals include presenting that many slaves received training in skills that were beneficial to them after they were released. VP Kamala Harris came down here to preach a sermon (speech) about how Florida is trying to brain wash kids and make them think that slavery was OK since some slaves had a skill afterwards.. Life is getting crazy in the South!

I need to see that film again. It's been a while since my last viewing and I find that I usually seeing old movies again is better than most new movies. Here's a snip from the LA Times about Gillian's performance during the film; the reviewer agrees with you about the high quality performance: //Welch sang two songs and served as the associate producer for the Burnett-produced soundtrack to the 2000 film of the same name.[25] She shared vocals with Alison Krauss on a rendition of the gospel song "I'll Fly Away." Dave McKenna of The Washington Post praised their version: the singers "soar together."[26] Burnett and Welch wrote additional lyrics for the song "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby," sung by Welch, Emmylou Harris, and Krauss. The song is an elaboration of an old Mississippi tune discovered by Alan Lomax, and was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals.[27] The platinum album won the 2002 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The surprise success of the soundtrack gave Welch a career boost.[28][29] Welch also made a cameo appearance in the film.[30]//

Life is getting crazy in the South! Nat Myers looks talented and promising so I'll look forward to seeing him at MerleFest soon. It's a great starting place for "new kids" in all types of music, though they are using the label "Americana" and "roots" a lot - clearly right down Nat's alley. I hear lots about DeSantis and speculation about where he is at in his presidential campaign. Some speculate he has peaked. Can't tell anything since all the oxygen is being directed to TFG's literal trials and figurative tribulations (I for one do not accept he is a poor victim, unfairly persecuted), but I don't see how DeSantis thinks running to the right of Trump is a good "lane." What do I know - nothing. However, it doesn't make much sense to me to fight against Disney and Mickey Mouse as one of the largest businesses & employers in the state. Still, there are plenty of sensible people in the south, but they don't get much of the publicity. I hope they can constitute a majority in the electorate for the general election, becuase right now all focus is on the primaries.

That concert was reportedly terrific - sure looked that way from the TV show about it. I think it was a special piece with Anderson Cooper, maybe on "60 Minutes." Last nigh on AC 360 it was Anderson's day off but he put appeared anyway to fondly honor (and with an emotional catch in his voice) Tony Bennett and reminisce about his time with Tony and his wife Susan, and with Lady GaGa, working on that amazing concert. It seemed to come off without a hitch despite Tony's fairly advanced dementia. When it comes to performing "the American book" of music, Tony remained ever the very talented professional.

My son-in-law is playing with some friends in a band locally. Somehow they got recommended to play for an event.. at the Governor's Mansion! So now I have pics of all of my grands with the Governer and first lady, and the Governor and my daughter and son-in-law.. I'm not sure how they wound up being "republicans" but I guess I have only myself to blame for not educating my daughter well enough in the early years! I couldn't imagine having a very civil conversaton with Ronnie these days.. just too much of my life I have spent trying to save things and now trying to help the homeless, and he stands only for those things which match up with his personal agenda to put everyone who doesn't agree with him away. Floridians are facing double digit increases in home and auto insurance and he is off making speeches in other states and refusing to answer public record requests about who is paying for all of his travel.. and who is illegally taking assylum seekers and dropping them off in other states, etc. And he seems just to be a puppet in some ways.. don't know who the guy really is. Sigh

He is a politician - he says he believes in whatever he thinks will get him the votes he needs to be elected/re-elected. What he really believes is unknown to the electorate. He was born in Jax, went to Catholic schools until public high school, then Yale and Harvard for college and law school, though he and his crowd denounce "those Ivy league liberals."
I had the impression that many Floridians were pleased with his effectiveness as governor - practical things like hurricane clean-up. But now he is running for president so he doesn't really care about Florida any more, though he will engage in clearly political stunts to gain national attention. Who knows what he "really believes"? Maybe he isn't sure himself, or has no convictions other than getting elected.

As far as the band and the family members - I don't know if one's political affiliations have any effect on the likelihood of being asked to perform at the governor's mansion. The invite may have been extended by a single employee's remark, kind of a one-off situation.

I have no travel plans involving substantial travel in the next week or more.
Have a great week!
