Well there are 211 days left in this year. I don't recall ever living life with an intimate knowledge of how many days had gone bye or how many days were left in the current year. I never even had a countdown clock running when I knew what day I would retire on. Some kids I have known have asked how many days until their birthday or till Christmas, as if knowing would somehow inspire them or make them happy! When we get together to listen to the Classic Rebroadcast, sometimes I can barely (if at all) remember hearing it the first time around, or at some subsequent replay when the live show was on a break. Tonight's show will be a great one for me, because I distinctly remember when I got my very own copy of GK's movie "A Prairie Home Companion" directed by Robert Altman and co-featuring some amazing performers of the day. That DVD still sits in my collection, and I enjoy it each time I pop it in. To promote the release of the Robert Altman movie based on A Prairie Home Companion, many of the cast members gathered to perform on the LIVE radio show. The program broadcast from the iconic Hollywood Bowl way back on June 3, 2006 where special guest actors Meryl Streep, Virginia Madsen, and John C. Reilly joined the Royal Academy of Radio Acting. The featured musical guests, none other than the incomparable Shelby Lynne, Sally Dworsky, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.
Highlights include Pat Donohue and the Shoe Band with “Goin’ to California,” Garrison and Meryl singing “All Alone,” Shelby Lynne rocking the stage with “Baby” and “One with the Sun,” Doyle Lawson with “Blue Train,” plus more than a few scripts and the latest NEWS. The Robert Altman-directed film A Prairie Home Companion was released in 2006 and was his final movie before he passed away in November of that year. Robert Altman was so revered in the film industry that when he called, actors would drop whatever they were doing in order to work with him.www.prairiehome.org/shows/57173.html

Other featured guests on this week’s show:
Sally Dworsky While always making her own music, Sally Dworsky has steadily sung in a variety of collaborative roles: she co-fronted (with Chris Hickey) the LA alt-rock band Uma and harmonized — on stage and in the studio — with R.E.M., Peter Gabriel, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Shelby Lynne, Teddy Thompson, Jonatha Brooke, Rodney Crowell, and others. Her singing and songs have been featured in numerous TV shows and films, and she provided the defining voices for lead characters in animated films including The Lion King, Prince of Egypt (both won Oscars for the songs she sang), and Shrek.
Shelby Lynne Born in Virginia and raised in Alabama, Shelby Lynne moved to Nashville in her early 20s. There she recorded a few demos and finally landed a spot on TNN's Nashville Now, which led to a recording contract with Epic Records. She had moderate success, made a few albums, and even won the 1991 CMA Horizon Award (for top emerging artist). But it was only after relocating to Palm Springs, California, that things really started to happen for this talented singer/songwriter. She released the album I Am Shelby Lynne (Island Records), and she won a Grammy Award for "Best New Artist” — even though she'd already chalked up five CDs and more than a decade's worth of performing. She has released over 20 albums with the most recent being The Servant on Extreme Records.
Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Doyle Lawson was born in East Tennessee-where he still makes his home-and grew up in a family that sang gospel music. He remembers looking forward to Saturdays when the Grand Ole Opry was on the air and he could hear the likes of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. At age 11, Doyle taught himself to play the mandolin, and when he was still in his teens, he got a job playing banjo with Jimmy Martin. In 1966 he joined J.D. Crowe and five years later went to work with The Country Gentlemen. He started his own band in 1979, calling it Doyle Lawson & Foxfire, before settling on Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Doyle’s recent recording is 2021’s Roundtable.

Partly cloudy and chance of sarcastic. And the first week of Hurricane Season. That's for all of us, of course.

We need to find a blue train headed north... not south! I think you folks got more rain out of the Gulf than we did.

So what exciting things are going on with you? I'm enjoying a slow and steady supply of veggies from the garden. We had a nice little week of cooler than normal weather but seems like we are creeping back into the 90's now. And of course the college students and legislative clowns have all left town!

Nothing much. Finally got my truck cleaned up. That was last weekend and one of the reasons I was so beat.
I'm still going to rehab, privately, working on this knee. October will be a year. When I was a year post-op from my shoulder, January '22, and finally getting in better spirits, that's when the R knee went out and it was 9 months before I could get it fixed, so I'm not expecting any miracles, or to be really feeling better till next Fall. There better not be anything else for a while. I've just about had it.

One good thing, we picked up Netflix, since they picked up Manifest for it's last season. I didn't realize they would load all the episodes at once, so I'm bingeing, man. I am awash in a sea of Flight 87. It's cool!

Too much entertainment and enjoyment when we're younger, I guess.

I have my music group, and Storytelling, but I'm having trouble getting back in the practice, memorization groove. I have time, for sure, and time for the yard work, but I generally wind up zoning out in front of the 'puter. Or stay up too late and get up too late. A little organization and motivation would help.

This weekend hasn't been too bad; it's our twice yearly on-line Dulcimer Quarantune Festival. So we get to do a few workshops, and there are 5 total concerts by the instructors. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, then two on Sunday. So that's all kind of fun, for sure. That's why I'll be checking out early after the first half.

Getting into a routine is very helpfull, back when we had to go to work, we managed to get up and just do it .. since i am out 4 mornings a week picking up food and delivering it to the homeless.. I find I can get other things done after I finish since I am already up and out.. set up some goals for yourself and some out of the house stuff.. you will get back to where you want to be!!

This is a great set of posts to read through after the fact. Let me say that I think from both my perspectives - as a family doc and more importantly as a friend - I think that you are both doing great. It's my medical practice habit that when I see my patients are working hard and doing it quite well, I tell them so and it's especially important to hear it from their doctor because if they have a doc who really cares about them (not one of those 9 - 5 "rent-a-docs" who are just doing their job and then go home), then it can be especially impactful. I try to remember that with My Friends too.
It can be difficult "adulting", parenting, and especially aging. In the Third World I see people who are very happy living a subsistence existence - in the tropics where there is a water supply, plenty of food swimming in the water or growing from the land spontaneously around them. They "work" thatching the roof, fishing or hunting (bows and arrows), food gathering and meal creating, raising the kids (their own and the others around them in the village) for 4 hours a day of "work." The other 20 hours/day is being with friends and family, having fun and getting enough rest.
Here is "the developed world" life is much harder in many ways. In others such as health care, maybe not so much. However my view is that of a very interventionist Western MD because that is what we do here, though much of any real healing comes from the caring part. DW you know that from your work. Jay so do you from your own perspective.
Jay and DW - You are doing real good.
I didn't have much trouble recovering from my knee surgery as you have Jay. Although the knee was very painful and caused trouble, in toto I have had much more trouble with ambulation and heavy work due to MS so the knee was de minimus and I have no upper extremity or back problems. But the BTB (brain tumor business) was really difficult and that recovery took me a full 15 months, and the last month was a full 4 weeks in Big Sur at Esalen to make sure I was polished and finished! Major rehab step, seemed to sme perhaps grstuitous but that finishing up was essential.
The 50th reunion weekend was amazing. In many ways it was Just Like The Old Days. Only better! After the formality & ceremonies, hours were spent gathering In Someone's Dorm Room listening to the Grateful Dead and vaping. Most of the people there I had not seen in 50 years! But those 4 seminal years from 1969 - 1973 in a small private liberal arts school were of critical importance. We share incredibly strong bonds ever 50 years later, even if we "didn't even know each other" back then.
I strongly agree with the approach to Establishing A Routine. I have lots of stuff to do 1) tending to active medical issues, 2) dealing with Howard's issues especially with attention to cognition which can cause friction, and 3) planning and executing strategies for selling this house and its contents and Moving Back East. Howard cannot help much with the last one - too many steps and long-term strategics involved. It's hard to get stuff done if you sleep to noon and spend too much time on TV, computer etc.
But I'm doing well and that's OK because I get a lot of Help From My Friends - like you, youse guys, y'all, youens, etc!
