From May through to the end of the season — around the fourth of July— A Prairie Home Companion generally hit the road, performing the show LIVE around the country for host stations and giving longtime listeners of the radio show a chance to see how it’s all put together. This week’s classic show ( May 6, 2000) was performed live from the Sundome Center for the Performing Arts in Sun City West, Arizona, and featured special guests Linda Ronstadt, Butch Thompson, and Lynn Peterson. Highlights include Garrison singing with Lynn on the Marty Robbins tune “At the End of a Long, Lonely Day,” some talk with Linda Ronstadt before she shares “Heart Like a Wheel’ and “Lush Life,” and “Kansas City Blues Man” played by Butch Thompson. And the sketches: Cowboys, Bertha’s, Rhubarb, Catchup, and the latest News. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57915.html

About tonight's guests:
Linda Ronstadt Linda Ronstadt is one of the greatest singers of all time and her distinctive vocals lend themselves to many different genres. Her musical career spans rock, country, opera, easy listening, standards, and Latin. She has won more than a dozen Grammy Awards plus countless other honors, including being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and being saluted with the Kennedy Center Honors in 2019. Though a health condition has ended her singing career, she keeps a busy schedule mentoring other artists. A documentary called Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice was released in 2019 to great acclaim. She also released an archived album called Live from Hollywood.
Lynn Peterson Singer-songwriter-science geek Lynn Peterson is a native Minnesotan whose career took her to New York City, where she spent eight years as a performer, composer, and studio vocalist, before returning to the Twin Cities. And the science geek part? She studied chemistry as an undergrad and now continues work focused on chemistry and sustainability.
Butch Thompson For 12 years of his four-decade career, Butch Thompson was the house pianist on A Prairie Home Companion, dating back to the show’s second broadcast in July 1974. As a soloist, he had earned a worldwide reputation as a master of ragtime, stride, and classic jazz piano. Described by Jazz Journal International as “the premier player in traditional jazz today,” Thompson also performed with his well-known trio, his eight-piece New Orleans Jazz Originals, and with symphony orchestras, including the Hartford Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Cairo (Egypt) Symphony. Sadly, Butch passed away in 2022.

OK, tuned in although the TV is turned on to the Kentucky Derby but is muted until the fast two minutes in sports.
And he already made a mistake - the state of Arizona has only one time zone for the whole state and does not observe twice yearly time changes.*
*Some exceptions may exist

Hiya all, I know it is Derby Day.. and I am sure you all will be dual duty watching who is left to actually run in the race this year! Hat's and drinks ready? My mother always had her annual Derby Day party but I have made no Derby Day preps. People don't socialize much in person anymore, that stuff all happens online now. Of course one must always stand when they play "My Old Kentucky Home." Attending the Kentucky Derby s not currently on My List, but each year it is up for Consideration, perhaps when we are living in a local that borders Kentucky (must check map on that). Point well-taken, 5 horses have died this week at Church Hill Downs, and 4 horses have been scratched from the big race in the last few hours. ETA: I checked my map and see that NC does not actually share a border with KY, but it is pretty close.

So I had a late night side job that started on Friday afternoon and I did not get home until the wee hours this morning. So I decided I would try to rest up and turned on the rebroadcast of the coronation and other festivities from London as the new King and Queen became official. I had no idea that it was so steeped in Medeival traditions... etc. And so I sat on the couch for about 3 hours!! I guess that was also a result of making homemade eggs benedict arnold with ham for my sweet wife who did not nag me for not coming home until the wee hours!! She did make the coffee!

I do not understand all the hoopla about this coronation business. I thought Prince-now-King Charles wanted to "slim down the monarchy" and this big party costing hundred of millions of pounds doesn't seem all that "slim." But I guess they put on a showy show. I watched a few highlights this morning, but it was not worth getting up in the middle of the night like I did for Charles and Diana's wedding and her funeral.
Plus his wife is an unattractive grifter, the king himself has demonstrated low moral character, and IMHO the both of them looked silly sitting there getting those crown thingies put on their heads.

However I thought about the economic benefit of having a monarchy and a coronation, street vendors, souveniers, all the people who worked on the preparations and parties, and of course all the people who take care of the special things like swords and chairs and robes and crowns. They had street interviews and people had come from all over the world, so that meant a big boost in tourism spending. I do agree that the example the two have set for the people is kinda the opposite of what all the church words suggested God should be doing through the King.. but hey our leaders are no better in the morality department!

Oh I agree, the monarchy and all the trappings are likely a net financial plus to the UK, tourists and all, and then the churches of the UK and Europe have preserved a lot of art and music over the years that likely would otherwise have been lost. For genealogy buffs all the state church records are a bonanza as they are the repository for all the birth, marriage and death records going back centuries.

I think they were listed as 16 - 1. I didn't follow all the pre-race hoopla as all the deaths (total was 7 horses as 2 more died this morning) dampened the enthusiasm.

Yes, in two earlier races today, two horses pulled up lame, were loaded into equine ambulances on the track, taken away and euthanized.
I don't understand their physiology but apparently there are leg injuries that just won't heal - you can see looking at the horses that the legs are thin and fragile - no matter how hard and long you try, so they are immediately put down. Two of the dead horses were trained by a trainer who was apparently under suspicion for mistreatment, so he was suspended yesterday and his horse for the Derby - Lord Miles, who was the favorite - was pulled from the race.
Tragic. It's no wonder the horse racing industry is under a lot of criticism.

One is male and one is female. The male was putting no weight at all on his paw while the female was pushing a little on it. My weet wife wants to catch the male and take him in, but he only shows up periodically and I tell her that it would not be a good idea to have to catch him and cage him and wait a long time before a VET office was open.. We both have a tender heart for injured animals, and she has captured and taken about 10 feral cats over a few years and with the aide of her sister had them neutered and then released back. She was putting out nine bows of food every morning when I met her, but the cats living in the wild disappear quickly around here. Not sure if it is increased traffic, coyotes, or just bad luck. Anyway down to about 4.. and two of those are lame at the moment.

We've sung this song so many times at "choir practice" - on the ship and at the live shows.

[/quote] There are some agencies that specialize in trap, neuter & release, and some that concentrate on rehabbing feral cats and getting them adopted to permanent homes if they are suitable. Our two current cats are both rescues and the younger one, Fuzzy the Maine Coon Cat, was a street cat who was rounded up badly injured, underwent a lot of vet care in Spokane, then was brought out to western WA where we adopted him. He is a very fine gentleman, a great addition to the family. He even tolerates being an indoor cat, which is important since our other cat Biggie Smalls is blind and can't go out. Y'all have a great week, dw!
