Well the mean old Covid finally caught me and so I have spent the week on and off fighting it off and trying to live as normal. Fortunately the vaccine(s) did the job and I did not have much trouble. But I will be glad when the last residuals leave me and I can resume normal behavior. This week we bring you a 2012 performance of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor from Houston, Texas. Special guests: Texas renaissance man Joe Ely, 21st-century troubadours Johnnyswim, and vocalist Christine DiGiallonardo. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors (Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman) and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Highlights include Christine DiGiallonardo's version of “Crazy,” Rich Dworsky’s composition “The Washington Express,” “'Bonsoir” by Johnnyswim, “Down on the Drag” by Joe Ely, a song or two from our host, plus Guy Noir, the Lives of the Cowboys, and the News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/47817.html

JOE ELY Joe Ely left West Texas as a teenager and "followed Woody Guthrie west and the blues guys down south; was on the West Coast during all the big hippie days." After living in Europe for a while, he returned to Texas. This 1989 Lubbock West Texas Walk of Fame inductee was recently named Texas State Musician for 2016. His many recordings include 2015's Panhandle Rambler (Rack 'Em Records). Multi-instrumentalist Robbie Gjersoe joins Joe Ely for this performance.
JOHNNYSWIM Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano were each pursuing separate music careers when they met some years ago in Nashville. One thing led to another and soon the two were writing songs and singing together. Now husband and wife, they call their duo Johnnyswim - the name comes from a scene in the movie Jawswhere a guy named Johnny is trying to escape the shark as his friend yells from the dock, "Swim Johnny, swim!" Johnnyswim's latest EP is titled Home, Vol. 1.
When singer-actress Christine DiGiallonardo and her two older sisters were kids in Brooklyn, they loved stacking up three-part harmonies and entertaining family and friends. They even put on elaborate backyard shows and charged the neighbors admission. Today, Christine’s credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona (Shakespeare in the Park Festival), My Fair Lady (Lincoln Center), and Monica! The Musical (New York Musical Theatre Festival).

I guess that with this BA 5 variant we're all apt to finally get it, or catch another round. Certainly as someone who spent over two years "on the front lines but Covid-free" I was pretty surprised to test positive on Mother's Day when I wasn't even sick! But I've recovered and I hope the same for you dw. Were you a candidate for treatment for Paxlovid to prevent hospitalization? I had all the risk factors for complications but also contraindications so I did not - recovered anyway.
And I'm a;; tuned in, ready to go.

I wasn't sure I even had it, until I got a notice that someone who was at the same meeting I was at the previous week tested positive and so the wife and I went down to the free test site in town and less than 30 minutes later we had positive results.

I was surprised that they picked a November show for today's classic rebroadcast. But they would have eventually not had any other choice since there were few shows in Late July and early August to pick from!

Yes, for th past "season" they have been shows appropriate to the date. This one is fine, though I have to say that Texas is not the favorite for many of us who happen to like our Constitution, especially if one is a doctor who believes the practice of medicine should be limited to those who are properly licensed to do so.
I was relating some of my adventures practicing Middle Ages style of Medicine when I was in Afghanistan and in the midst of a war going on.
And Joe Ely is mighty fine! and also the DiG's!

Did everyone get the notice from GK about more APHC reunion shows? DC on October and Town Theater in NYC in November.
I'm contemplating a month back east - some concerts, Storytelling, then a reunion show.

We have lots of guest viewers today. I always thought it was just bots but there are lots more during this show time slot.
I did put the website address in the chat room than ran during the Nashville reunion show.
And dw, I was able to join as a new member by using a different ISP and email address (no approval by Trusty required), though I haven't actually posted as the newest member yet, because it is a lot of trouble go back to the different ISP, email, user and passwords, etc.

Hey Doc, did you lose your senses of taste and smell during your episode with the Covid? I have not missed anything so far, but the wife who tested positive on Monday was mysteriously without much smell just yesterday afternoon and not too much taste either. Seemed odd that it took so long to go away when she has regained her strength and has almost stopped coughing.

I have learned never to swear "I will never do that" because that is practically a guarantee that I will find my self doing that very same thing again! So I like country music, it's fine with me, even though I used to think I didn't like it and wouldn't listen to it.

I therefore presumed that none of the true "guests" could ever join us, since none of them have. And as you demonstrated, it is possible to become a member of prairieCHATTER, but no one has in a very long time. Thus I am left wondering why would people log in as a guest, and not wish to do anything to interact.. and I cannot imagine our conversation is so exciting that they would tune in just to watch us gibber!

Seemed odd that it took so long to go away when she has regained her strength and has almost stopped coughing. No my taste and smell were normal and I had no fever or cough either, though I was a little tired (just like always with MS) and had a little runny nose from my usual spring allergies, as I'd had for weeks, and I'm just now noticing are better, as usual in the summer. I didn't notice anything until the night before I was going to go back to work I got short of breath when I brought dry laundry up from the basement. Saw the doctor, had a chest X-ray and turned out I had pneumonia. It cleared up right away with antibiotics like a bacterial pneumonia would, but very suspicious if that just happened to occur right when I was getting better from Covid. Likely a Covid pneumonia, common complication in us older adults with risks. My husband never got sick even though we sleep in the same bed every night. But when my son had Covid the first time, he had the loss of smell and taste for weeks after everything else cleared up, but taste/smell did eventually return to normal; the second time he had it, he didn't have that at all. Now my daughter here in Seattle has Covid, tested positive after known exposure and she is mildly ill with fever, cough and very sore throat. She is better today that yesterday though, hopefully will continue uneventful recovery.

Mystery to me too. In the chat room I emphasized we'd welcome new members, so c'mon in! Offer still stands - y'all come on and join us. dw you watched the numbers closer than I did - is is always more guests during "show time"?

I couldn't meet up last week with my new chat room APHC friends, but we're getting together again next month so I'll mention it again. I had a really good phone conversation with one of the chat room friends earlier today. I know that lots of cool APHC friends are out there.
I also invited friends to join when I was on the cruises, and again in the email chain regarding the reunion show at Red Rocks.

God bless the Cajun Navy!
Kentucky is one state that I am not very familiar with, though I've visited several times. However, I do know about those floods that occur in Appalachia, up and down those hollers that all have one winding road and one or two "layers" of houses along the creek. When that creek rises...
In southwestern Virginia, West Virginia, and western North Carolina we see those too. I've checked and our place in the Blue Ridge is fine, but the SW Virginia affected areas are not far away. Can be a very dicey situation, thank goodness for the Cajun Navy and the US Coast Guard too in some areas. After Katrina, they were the only significant federal govt service rescuing people off the rooftops, the choppers ran 24/7 to get the ones that the Cajun Navy couldn't get to.

So Jay, how is your recovery coming along? Oh, there's no recovery yet. My wife took a fall last week and I had to cancel. We got final X-ray exams yesterday, showed no fractures in the hands or face. So I called and asked to get put back on the OR schedule. We'll see Monday, I imagine, what's going to happen.

I didn't recall the WSJ as a sponsor of APHC, as it didn't really seem like much of a fit.
I've subscribed for nearly 40 years and think their news operation is top notch, a needed counterbalance to NYT and WaPo. So I was really surprised last week when they published an OpEd claiming that there was no 10 year old Ohio girl pregnant as a result of rape, implied the story was made up by the libruls.
They issued an online apology immediately when the truth came out and documentation was provided, information that the Attorney General had available to him but didn't bother to request it. Then the WSJ published the dead trees version of the OpEd the next day. This is what happens when Rupert Murdoch can't draw the line between news and opinion, nor apparently is he aware that opinions should still be based on facts.
