This week’s classic show comes from St. Louis, Missouri — a broadcast from the fabulous Fox Theatre on June 18. 2016. Iris DeMent visits to sing a few songs from the heartland, by way of Russia; our country-singing friends The Cactus Blossoms travel down the Mississippi from Minneapolis; and Missouri native Joe Newberry joins us straight from his adopted home in North Carolina with his banjo and guitar. Plus: our Royal Academy of Radio Actors, Sue Scott, Tim Russell, and Fred Newman; our magnificent radio orchestra — Jonathan Dresel on drums, bassist Larry Kohut, Richard Kriehn on mandolin and fiddle, and guitarist Chris Siebold, under the steadfast direction of pianist Richard Dworsky; and an update on the very latest from Lake Wobegon, the little town that time forgot, and the decades cannot improve. Highlights include a wonderful Guy Noir sketch, the return of a few favorites with updates on Bob, Father’s Day, and Catchup, a wonderful sad song about being “Unfriended," Joe Newberry being “Reminiscent,” “Change Your Ways or Die” from The Cactus Blossoms, plus "Listening to Singing" and “Reject the Burden" from Iris DeMent. www.prairiehome.org/shows/51964.html

More about this week’s guests
Iris DeMent was born on the Arkansas Delta and grew up in California the youngest of 14 children. Her dad played fiddle; her mother dreamed of singing on the Grand Ole Opry. For a family that saw its share of hard times, music was a necessity of life, not just a pastime. Since launching her career in the early 1990s, Iris has become one of the most celebrated artists of her generation.
Raised in Minneapolis, brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum have been blending their voices as The Cactus Blossoms since 2010. Their hypnotic harmonies and unforgettable songs have made them favorites on the Twin Cities music scene and beyond. Wrote one reviewer: “Hearing their music is like traveling back in time to when country music started crackling on the radio for the first time.”
Missouri native and North Carolina transplant Joe Newberry has made music most of his life. He grew up in a family full of singers and dancers, took up the guitar and banjo as a teenager, and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. He has joined forces with Bruce Molsky and Rafe Stefanini as the Jumpsteady Boys, played in a duo with mandolinist Mike Compton, and in a quartet with old-time music legends Bill Hicks, Mike Craver, and Jim Watson.
Robin and Linda Williams For decades, Robin and Linda Williams were frequent guests on A Prairie Home Companion starting in 1976. They just completed a great West Coast trek with Garrison as The Hopefuls. They have made numerous television appearances on the Nashville Network’s Fire on the Mountain, Nashville Now, and Music City Tonight. The duo has also been heard on other nationwide radio programs, including the Grand Ole Opry, Mountain Stage, and NPR’s All Things Considered. With more than two dozen recordings and three musicals to their credit, they are considered to be among the finest songwriters in the folk-country tradition. That tradition continues with their latest CD, A Better Day A-Coming.

Hi Jay & DW!
Thanks for the rundown DW (should that be CAPS or small?), so I can at least tell what is in the immediate future! A good start.
I can relate to those "car knob" challenges, having rented numerous rental cars recently. Much more knobs that I don't know what to do with.

Welcome back Jay... I was worried the Central Florida mobs had taken you captive We don't have mobs; it's too hot. (But thanks for the welcome!) Well the Internet chatter says that Disney is full of mobs... more people than ever in spite of quotas per day... lots of complaints about the happiest place on earth these days. My grandkids and their parents spent a week down there... didn't get much play by play but they said it was hot and crowded.

I try to avoid St. Louis because every time I pass through there, I make a least at least 3 trips around that silly arch before I can figure out how to cross the Mississippi River.
I am contemplating a trip to Nashville to see both the APHC reunion show and a Brandi Carlile concerts, but a major deterrent is that I-64 and I-40 and I-65 are almost as bad. Maybe if I go I will just stick with Uber, as lots of musical stuff is located close together.

I had the same thought, as I haven't been to DisneyWorld in quite a few years for just this reason. One year I went there for a meeting in early December and learned that is supposedly the Best Time to visit - kids are still in school and that is after Thanksgiving but before Christmas-New Years. When it first opened, my brother and I used to go pretty often. It was only about 90 minutes from our house on the St. John's River, and we were young and could go from opening time until they closed at midnight! Those were the days.

I haven't been to Disney in over 30 years; the last time our daughter's high school dance troupe performed. There has been so much added since then I wouldn't know where to start. Same with Universal.

Same with Universal. I took my youngest daughter down there a few years ago, before she headed off to Korea to teach.. it was more crowded than I prefer.. and at the time in order to get much done you had to book ahead of time for the popular rides on a fast pass system, which they have replaced with some other fancy app..

Airfares are high (however I have a credit with American IAirlines that should cover most of that) but I can get tickets through Bramily (the fan club) at face value or less, and than APHC still has plenty of tickets through the Ryman website. No scalping secondary market necessary. Brandi is on July 8 & 9, while APHC is on the 10th.

When is that AHPC reunion at the Ryman? Sunday, July 10. Say, you guys cook more than I do but I've got a 2&1/4 pound "grass fed beef shoulder roast" from ButcherBox and I am trying to figure out the best way to cook it. Any ideas?

Crock pot or Instant Pot (I do not have one of those but am told they are handy). Place in pot with veggies of choice and a little seasoning to your liking, set and forget for the appropriate amount of time per your cooking device. Slow cooking breaks down the meat better than a hotter roasting in the oven would.

Yeah I went ahead and looked it up. I see the tickets are anywhere from $59 to $125. I looked at the sections but they didn't show the availability, just the section numbers. As for the meat, you could dig a hole and do it Dutch oven style, or put it on a spit over a slow fire. Of course someone would have to sit and keep the critters off. Do it overnight along with some adult beverages and some storytelling.

I have an Insta-Pot but it has so many buttons and knobs that I am confused and just stick with my Dutch Oven.
I saw Joe Newberry in concert in Charlotte, NC a couple years ago when I got together with some cruise friends. It was an old church converted into an entertainment venue, kind of like that place in Ashville where Jay and I saw Maria Muldaur. Joe was familiar with Sparta, commented favorably on a new music place in Sparta, where my house is. He said people even drive up the mountain to see shows there.
When I was there in Sparta couple months ago, the place was still open but the schedule was still limited as everyone recovers from Covid.

If under "select your own seats" you click on the section you want, the actual seats available will show up.
And BTW, I cook in the kitchen, only my own critters, no wildlife.

I am amused when I think about all of the devices that the youngsters can purchase today to do simple things that us old timers never needed help to do. I make lots of one pan meals... on the stove. But a crock pot is a lovely lower heat way to cook a Sunday roast with veggies and not have to sweat because of the oven heating the house!

Yeah, I found available seats on the floor, middle sections 4&5, granted, they're at the back. I'm trying it on my phone and having trouble actually selecting the seating. I might give it a try later on my desktop. Where are you?

I do have a crock pot but it is in North Carolina and I am in Washington the State. I think the Insta-Pot can serve as crock pot if I bothered to figure it out, and using a crock pot in the Florida heat definitely has advantages. It almost never gets really hot here in western Washington, though last summer was an exception that broke all records.
We'll see what this summer brings.
