This week on A Prairie Home Companion, we revisit the first complete live broadcast performance from 2012, with special guests, country star Brad Paisley and men’s vocal ensemble Cantus. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors, Tim Russell and Sue Scott; the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band; vocalist Andra Suchy; and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/56507.htmlMore about this week’s featured guests When Brad Paisley was about eight, his grandfather gave him a guitar and a piece of advice: “Anything that’s going wrong in your life, you can pick this guitar up and it’ll go away.” Seems grandpa was right. At 12, Paisley wrote his first song. He was invited to perform it at a Rotary Club meeting, and that’s when a radio program director asked Brad to appear on WWVA’s Jamboree USA. Brad was a hit, and he hasn’t stopped wowing music moguls and fans alike. He is a multiple Grammy winner and inductee into the Grand Ole Opry, among many other accolades. Based in the Twin Cities, Cantus is recognized as one of America’s finest professional male vocal ensembles. The artist-led group is known for adventurous programming spanning many periods and genres — chant to spirituals, art song to folk song, Bach to the Beatles. The Washington Post described their sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power.” Andra Suchy spent her childhood on a farm near Mandan, North Dakota, the daughter of two talented singers. By the time she was in grade school, she was traveling around, doing concerts and festivals with her family. She has performed with several groups in the Twin Cities area, and you might have recognized her voice on commercials for White Castle, Target, and more.

Both Jay and I had to miss this show in the first airing, so perhaps we can catch up tonight!

As a bonus, this week we provide the lyrics to the sketch “Mouthwash,” which tells the story of our favorite morning ritual and why it’s so important to singers, plus a classical music moment on the show!
If you would like to sing in the choir There’s just one thing that we require One rule: we use a mouthwash every day. Use a rinse or a spray So when you sing and make a forceful sound You don’t knock someone down.
We sing Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach If we sing loud, we use mouthwash. People sitting in the mezzanine Know that our breath is clean And from our point of view We say to you: You ought to use it too.

Is that IceMelt a real product? If so, I should investigate it for use on our driveway (aka "The Steepest Driveway in Bellingham") when it snows. But it might not be environmentally friendly.

GK's singing on this show does NOT sound good. As I think about it, I recall that probably around that time, he singing was noticeably deteriorating - not a surprise for someone in his late 60's. Then for a while he got much better. Have not heard him lately, but maybe 3 or 4 years ago when he came to Bellingham on one of his solo tours he sounded very good.

Do you think this "Diggin in My Potatoes" is some kind of euphemism or double-entendre? Oh - you're probably not there yet!

After endless electronic paperwork, phone interviews, texts and demands for documents to account for every minute of my life since high school graduation (which is tricky because I dropped out, didn't make it to graduation), I am finally starting a new (temp) job next week! I am looking forward to it, as I am sick of being mostly house-bound and I miss seeing patients.

Hey, dw. Thanks for the show prep. I guess I'm missing the show this time, as well. It's Florida Storytelling Festival weekend. I'm having to catch this on line, since I did something to my R knee at the gym on Wednesday. Best I can tell I think I overstretched a ligament or something. I had my ticket paid for the whole weekend, was going to get in on a workshop or two. But noooo, I'm stumping around with a brace, taking Ibuprophen, smearing on Aspercreme, using my icepacek. At least since I was paid up I can watch all the tellers on line. This thing is out in Mt Dora, about 30 miles west of here. I started out yesterday, made about 5 miles down the 417 and had to turn around. So here I sit. You guys enjoy, everyone stay warm.

I was hoping we would capture Jay tonight Yeah, remember I said we've been ghosted? I should have said "near-ghosted," as he has dropped in a time or two this month, but not on Saturday during the show. I think he said he has been busy with fixing his ailments, and also working on his dulcimer stuff.

Too bad you can't be at the Storytelling event, but at least you can catch it virtually. After this show, I'm gonna watch a John McCutcheon livestream concert, and then after that, catch the Cowboy Poetry Gathering , also virtual.

I've been trying to reduce carbs too.
I think that high fructose corn syrup is EVIL, and bears considerable responsibility for the huge increase in obesity over the past 40 - 50 years. I remember when I was in high school and obesity was very rare. I was very offended when a "friend" set me up with a blind date and the guy was fat! I told her distinctly, don't ever do that again. Now two-thirds of adult Americans are obese or over weight.

Me too, usually. I mean sometimes there is Cowboy Poetry or MerleFest or Storytelling, and "in the old days" I might be traveling to visit the grands.
I dunno - life on the road has its positives and negatives.

I will tell you that when I was a road warrior, on the road 4 out of 5 days, weekly transcontinental customer visits, hitting 100,000 miles BIS (Butt-in-Seat) it was quite arduous. OTOH, after I quit that job, it was two years before I bought another paid airfare, as it took me that long to use up the miles and points.

So are you any closer to deciding if the move to the Eastern Time Zone is possible?

I will see how I like the job in Anacortes, where I will be temporarily filling in for a retiring physician. If we mutually agree, I might stay on "permanently", perhaps 3 or 4 years. In which case we might stay here.
If I don't like the job well enough to stay on, or if they want to hire someone else, I'll be looking back east. The Anacortes gig is a 5 month deal, which will give me some time to wrap up the details of another cross-country move and selling this house, though realistically people rarely move away from western Washington in the beautiful summer weather.
WA has no state income tax, so if I am working full-time, it is financially sensible to maintain a permanent address here, most likely by living here. NC does exempt Social Security from state income tax I think, though I'd have to pay it on pension and earnings.
So, bottom line, still uncertain.

One other important point. Housing costs have sky-rocketed here and our house is worth at least triple what we paid for it, and those capital gains on our primary home are federal tax-free. None of our prior homes have sold with any appreciable gain.

Looking back at "last year's" list of those who passed isn't as painful when it was 10 years ago. The New Year's Eve passing of Betty White was very sad. Yes, she was nearly 100, but I thought somehow that she would live forever.
