Tonight we go back to December 18, 1999. Spread the Christmas cheer — this classic PHC is full of tinsel and ornaments you will fondly recall for years to come. This week, we revisit a show from 1999 featuring Tom Brokaw, the Klezmatics, Chee-Yun, and the full acting company plus our house band. The show will put you in a festive place and get you ready to face the season! ”The 12 Days of Christmas,” complete with sound effects, is the stunning centerpiece and one sketch that you will want to revisit year after year. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57957.html?Early in his career, Tom Brokaw worked Iowa and Nebraska, before moving in 1965 to Atlanta, where he anchored the news on WSB-TV. He joined NBC News the following year. An acclaimed political reporter, he served as NBC’s White House correspondent from 1973 to 1976. He anchored NBC’s Today from 1976 to 1981, and was the anchor of the weekday NBC Nightly News as well as The Brokaw Report (1992–93), a series of primetime specials that examined critical issues facing the nation. In addition to his career in broadcasting, Brokaw has written articles, essays, and commentary for publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. He is the author of a number of books, including The Greatest Generation and, more recently, The Fall of Richard Nixon: A Reporter Remembers Watergate. In addition to many other honors, Tom Brokaw is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, three Peabody Awards, and seven Emmys. Time Out New York wrote: “The Klezmatics aren’t just the best band in the klezmer vanguard; on a good night, they can rank among the greatest bands on the planet.” The Grammy-winning group began playing Jewish roots music in 1986, concocting klezmer in arrangements and compositions that combine Jewish identity and mysticism with a contemporary zeitgeist and a post-modern aesthetic. Since their first recording, 1989’s Shvagyn = Toyt (Yiddish for “Silence = Death”), they have released a stack of their own albums in addition to collaborating with a wide range of other artists, including Itzhak Perlman, Ben Folds Five, Israeli singer Chava Alberstein, choreographer Twyla Tharp, and members of the Flying Karamazov Brothers. For this Prairie Home performance, the Klezmatics are: Alicia Svigals (violin), Lorin Sklamberg (accordion/vocals), Paul Morrissett (bass/tsimbl), Frank London (trumpet/keyboards), David Licht (drums), and Matt Darriau (clarinet/saxophone). Chee-Yun made her first performance at the age of eight, after winning the grand prize in the Korean Times Competition in Seoul. At 13, she moved to the United States to study under renowned teacher Dorothy DeLay at The Juilliard School of Music. Within the year, she had made her Lincoln Center debut in a New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concert, and in 1985, she appeared as a soloist at The Kennedy Center for the Arts and at Carnegie Hall with the New York String Orchestra under Alexander Schneider. In 1993, she returned to Korea to receive the “Nan Pa” award, that country’s highest musical honor. Later that year, she was invited by President Clinton to perform at the White House for a National Medal for the Arts ceremony honoring Arthur Miller and Cab Calloway. She continues to perform with some of the world’s foremost conductors and orchestras, as well as in recitals in major cities worldwide. Recent recordings include Chee-Yun's Sentimental Memories.

OK I'm ready, but my favorite is the Hawaiian version of "12 Days of Christmas":
Twelve Days of Christmas Pidgin lyrics by Eaton Bob Magoon, Jr., Edward Kenny, Gordon N. Phelps Numbah one day of Christmas My tutu gave to me One mynah bird in one papaya tree 2 coconuts 3 dried squid 4 flower leis Five Big Fat Pigs!! 6 hula lessons 7 shrimps a swimming 8 ukuleles 9 pounds of poi 10 cans of beer 11 missionaries Numbah twelve day of Christmas My tutu gave to me 12 televisions (continue 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2) One mynah bird in one papaya tree
The song was written by three local guys, one of whom attended the same school I did (Punahou) so we all loved it. I lived in Honolulu 1962 - 1965 which was right when the song became popular - many fond memories.

The different versions are newer and more personal, hence more popular.

I haven't bought them either, though I have thought about it. But we have too many books already so I'd just check it out from the library if I develop a desire to read it.

You don't have to read/buy his books to appreciate all the work he has done in his decades of work.

You don't have to read/buy his books to appreciate all the work he has done in his decades of work. I was quite surprised when I went to our main library recentyly... significant reduction in book shelves... no librarian aides to check out the books... a few reference folks at desks... lots of computers with people playing games and watching videos on headsets.. it is a refuge for many of my homeless clients.. I guess folks read online now ..

You can also check out ebooks from many libraries, and then there is the Covid pandemic that encourages many to avoid indoor public activities - movies and concerts and plays, but also libraries, shopping malls, restaurants...

dw, do you subscribe to GK's "Back Room" publication on substack? He just sent out an email today about the "mini tour" they did at Christmas 2 years ago. It offers a video of half of the show at Town Hall in NYC. I'm not sure why he broadcasts only half the show, but I haven't watched it yet. Maybe he will explain. Or charge us $20 if we want to watch the second half.

This contest/drawing is to select lucky winners who will win a strip to St. Paul, MN in January! Even though it includes an APHC show, it still sounds suspect as a prize, joke-fodder.
I did fly to MSP once to see a show but it was the opening season show with meat loaf dinner and street dance - in September with nice weather.

I didn't notice, but figured I would watch later, maybe even tomorrow. After all, on Saturday night I need to watch Noir Alley with Eddie Muller on TCM. Priorities!

I PM'd him a couple weeks ago and he said he was OK though still dealing with some health issues, but he decided to spend less time "on FaceBook." I think maybe he meant all the social media on computer/tablet/cell etc but I don't really know. I am technically on Facebook but spend virtually no time there.
Jay hasn't posted much lately, if at all, but if he doesn't want to communicate or participate, I guess that's his choice.

I checked and Jay last logged on Nov 29. We've been ghosted. Well, my daughter has let folks know that as of Jan 1 she is off of Facebook.. I said I need the pics of the grandkids.. to which she responded she would still use instagram... not sure I understand why people will toss out the baby with the bathwater so to speak. You can unfriend folks, block folks, not respond, etc.. why let others ruin your experience I say

Christmas letters - I can't remember the last time I received one, and certainly haven't written one since the kids left home. Thinking about this, they are typically updates on all that one's kids achieved in the past year. Once the kids are on their own, the Christmas letters stop.
A couple months ago I received an actual letter from a friend who lives in Israel. That was very exciting and prompted me to consider resuming written communications by snailmail. I haven't done so yet. Brenda (the friend in Israel) and I usually communicate by email.

But I just did not want to remember that much! LOL

Facebook makes a whole lot of personal information available to the entire globe. I resent that, which is why I minimize participation. I signed up for Instagram two weeks ago when I was visiting my daughter in northern Virginia, though that was specifically for info about the Brandi Carlile concert.

Merry Christmas dw! My son called about 20 minutes before the show was over, and since he is going to Argentina for Christmas, I needed to talk with him.
