I watched the video of the "last show" that GK performed when he was leaving for Denmark (June 13, 1987). It was very interesting to see the difference between that show and the last one that I attended in St. Paul at the Fitz in 2016. Some parts were so familiar, and others were simply more spry! Chet Atkins and Leo Kottke did some amazing guitar work duing that show. And the Lake Wobegon characters all lined up to say good bye so to speak. Where did you find that first Last Show video, DW?

DW, even in 1987 GK had been at that PHC business for 13 years. Too bad they didn't give Chris Thile more of a chance but I guess Covid put an end to live radio for family entertainment.

How's not working, Doc, in that out-of-house way? I like some time off but I'd rather be employed if I could find the right spot. Meanwhile since I need to take my board re0certification exam in November, I've been prepping for that. Do they expect you to know everything new?

I remember how GK was always huffing and puffing and out of breath, then finally went in for the heart surgery. It made quite a difference when he came back to the show.

I read somewhere online that CT wanted a guaranteed contract for a certain amount of money.. and while Covid was an issue.. the show just wasn't producing enough revenue to cover what he wanted. Since he was already taking time off to do his own gigs, and his various group gigs, seems a bit greedy to give up on a show because of money...

/Do they expect you to know everything new?/
Yes they do. We all knew at the beginning that the half life of medical knowledge is about 3 years, and we are required to have a minimum of 50 hours of CME (continuing medical education) every year. And of course, pay thousands of $$$, which is no doubt the most important thing for the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Emily Lou played with Brandi Carlile at the 2019 show at the Gorge - a truly GREAT show. I admit bias - every Brandi Carlile show that I have seen was great.

Did Jay fall asleep after his grass adventures? Good question, DW. He did say he was killed, in the virtual way one would surmise.

//Well at least now I can appreciate why my urologist charges so much for an office visit that takes 5 minutes//
Urology is a nice specialty, good mix of OR and office with patients of all ages, but far from the highest paying. And it requires the usual 4 years of college pre-med (bio, chem, physics, calculus, etc) + 4 years medical school + 2 years of general surgery residency + 3 or 4 years of residency, and it's a very competitive tough residency to get into.
The two years of general surgery was the killer in my book. I think working 80 hours a week is a light schedule, but surgical training requires up 120 - 130 hours/week for the first 2 or 3 years.
I was offered a "free pass" to an excellent surgery residency program but decided I wanted to have a life outside the hospital so I declined, stuck with FP training which was only 60 - 100 hours/week and for only 3 years after college + medical school.

You have the advantage of hindsight... you can see how your choices played out in your life with family, career, life, etc. How do young medical students today make the choices ?

I haven't seen as many shows as you, Doc, but I agree! Her performances are amazing - she is so talented and she puts everything she's got into every performance. Not just her voice, which is remarkable, but also her songwriting and musical instrument skills. And she is such a genuine person, opens up and talks about her life and her feelings. Always having a great time on stage with the band, the family, the guest performers, and always so appreciative of her fans who have always believed in her. She has a wife and two kids and makes it so clear to even most of the bigots that her family is much like anyone else's.

They are smart enough to get into medical school so they are smart enough to stay away from medicine, especially in primary care where they can barely repay their $200,000+ educational loans, let alone do anything extravagant like buy a house or have kids.
If students ask doctors outside of academic medicine, most will tell those students not to go into medicine, especially now that it is just a corporate business run by suits with no health care expertise. It used to be a good career and a rewarding profession but now, even at $400K - $500K/year for a many specialties, it's not worth it. And half of those masquerading as doctors are not physicians at all, they are NP's, PA's, DPN, and even pharmacists and PT's are required to have "doctoral degrees."

BoatBabe, Brandi has an online fan club ("Bramily") you can join and they have regularly offered special performances there. I hope they keep it up even though they are back on the road now.
