This week I am off to the arch rival's town of Gainesville for a pleasant dinner out and a trip to the botanical gardens. Enjoy the show! April 17, 2010 broadcast with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks This week on A Prairie Home Companion, live from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, it's our 10th annual Talent Tee-Off. Five lucky bands will get their shot at national bragging rights and the coveted Silver Water Tower trophy, based purely on listener response both inside the venue and live on the Internet (Remember, if your local public radio station delays our live show, you'll need to listen live and vote here on prairiehome.org to participate). Also with us, sure-fire palate cleansers, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Prairie Home Music Director Richard Dworsky, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors; Tim Russell, Sue Scott, Fred Newman, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Vince Giordano grew up on Long Island playing vintage 78s on his grandmother's Victrola. Maybe that's what fueled his passion for music of the 1920s and '30s. By age 14, he had joined the musicians' union. Later, with Vince on string bass, tuba, and bass sax, he put together his own band, the Nighthawks, now longtime favorites on the New York jazz scene. www.prairiehome.org/shows/56697.html

This is a Big Day for me. My Baby Girl turns 40 today. Congratulations to you both! Does it make you feel old? It will be a while before my "baby" turns 40 but he did just buy himself condo, and he is excited to be moving into his very own place.. I didn't know that Andy Stein was part of VG & the Nighthawks.

Of course, it makes me feel old! Even though I've been to my 50th high school reunion, and am accumulating medical mile markers. We were still in San Fran. Which means it's been more than 40 years since Jonestown and the purple kool-aid, and Dan White assassinating Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone. Those were some lively times.

People also forget that assassination is what put Diane Feinstein on the national stage. She was President of the Board of Supervisors, and it was her responsibility to step up to the Mayor's office.

Ir's also the start of the AIDS epidemic. I remember a sense of sadness, or even doom - Jonestown, the assassination of Harvey Milk, and very beginning of AIDS as "the gay cancer."
Are you making plans for Storytelling Jay? I just checked the website and they are selling tickets and saying "See you in Jonesborough" so I hope that means it will really happen. I was surprised I hadn't received an email announcement or even snail mail.
I did get an official notice about MerleFest, which is Sept 23 - 26. Nothing official for TCM cruise, but the website says it is going to sail.

I'm kind of figuring on Storytelling. I have my own Yarnspinner's ticket. I need to double check again, but I believe I just donated my tickets last Fall, I could be wrong, I might still have them! Some things are up in the air, like my distance driving. All the lodging prices will be back up to usual levels, I understand. They're going up now. I'm really trying to stay focused on PT and rehabbing right now. It would be easy for me to make myself crazy "what if(fing)".

With MS, uncertainty is a fact of life. Buying tickets is insurance against sell-out. I may or may not actually to be able to go.

Well, I'm just awash with choices. I can stay here, or there are a couple of good people playing from the Spring Street Music Room in Jonesboro, or Suzy Boggus and Vince Gill are on the Opry! What a deal.

It's always too many choices or no good choice (on cable at least), even though there are 500 cable TV channels.

I don't imagine that milking cats goes any better than herding them.

I don't imagine that milking cats goes any better than herding them. Probably not. Plus you have to hang on to them while they're all upset!

We are still getting used to our "new cat" that we got last July, and he is getting used to us. He is pretty mellow though, doesn't get upset.
And although we named him "Deuce" we now call him "Fuzzy" instead because he is, well, VERY fuzzy.

At least Fuzzy doesn't have to worry about getting milked. Fuzzy is a Maine Coon Cat. That means he is very big. I would not get in any milk fight with him.
