I won't be joining live tonight but believe the show will be this one from back on January 23, 1999: This week we travel all the way back to 1999 for a show where everything old seems new again. This show from the Fitzgerald Theater features Maria Jette and Geoff Muldaur plus a few words on the state of the union and impeachment, words from Murphy’s Plumbing and Rhubarb. Tom Keith gets his own radio show, Maria sings “Prairie Lullaby,” Geoff sings “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.” And, of course, Guy Noir and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Versatile soprano Maria Jette can sing dozens of operatic roles. She also performs pop songs, chamber music, oratorio, and show tunes. She has appeared with orchestras nationwide, including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, New York Chamber Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra. Geoff Muldaur, the great folk and blues singer, whose high and reedy voice sounds like a voice from the earliest days of recordings, joined forces with The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band for a few tunes. Geoff is also a scholar and preserver of jug band music. Enjoy and leave me some interesting comments to see when I can listen. www.prairiehome.org/shows/58063.html

Hey, dw. Thanks for the set-up. We'll see if I'm holding this hill by myself, or if I'll be reinforced.

This is from long enough ago that GK sings solo, not limited to duets.

So, how are things going? Made any decisions about employment yet?

I've gotten the paperwork/offers in writing but I haven't thoroughly read them yet, much less decided. I just got the 10900 for my 2020 work, have to study the tax implications.
I remember seeing the Jim Kweskin Jug Band in the Village in the mid-1960's with Maria and Geoff Muldaur!

That is a pretty good sound from that collection of instruments.

Bob Dylan and Joan Baez were already Big Time by 1965 but so many others were very talented but readily available up-an-comers and the dozen or so little folk music cafes. Doc Watson, Rev. Gary Davis, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, I an & Sylvia, so many others. It was a lot of fun.

Are you familiar with The Rev. Payton and His Big Damn Band? They're a country blues outfit from Southern Indiana my brother introduced me to several years ago. They're doing a livestream at 7pm and have a Big Announcement. I might want to switch over to that at 7. I'll see.

Cosi Fan Tutti is one of the operas I saw in Germany - my uncle was singing in it!

I had a few back and forth e-mails with the Western gift shop in Elko today. A nice guy named "bob" with a small B. He said they were filming a number of videos today for the Virtual Cowboy Poetry Festival next weekend, and they looked like they were going to be fun. It's also right in the middle of the Fl Storytelling Festival which is 28th-31st. I'll have to see how all that shakes out. I'm a member in good standing with both outfits so I'm sure I'll have video available after both events. Too bad I can't be at either one!

I don't know the Rev Payton. I think there is an Arlo Guthrie concert today or tomorrow, and also probably John McCutcheon. One loses track of all of them, plus the storytellers

Yes, next Saturday I'll be "at Elko" even if it is virtual.
The Florida festival isn't doing any live performances? Several of my Florida colleagues report that life is proceeding as usual there - concerts, dinner parties, etc. Maybe they are smaller "house events."

I think you're right. I know Arlo moved back a week, and McCutcheon is on the Festival web-site for one of their study programs.
I was in touch with the Storytelling office about applying for their Storytelling as Medicine program. I had e-mailed Kirah between Christmas and New Year's but never got an answer. So I called, and got put through to his assistant! She checked it all out and got back to me the next day. Short version is that they're very limited in the use of the program right now, mainly for front-line, at risk personnel. Heal the healer. I guess I'm not front-line enough these days. But she said to keep track, they hope/plan to expand it. It could have been worse! We talked a couple of times, she was real nice. So that was kind of fun.

Not so much "back stage" but rather going to the parties to celebrate the opening of a new performance. Plus the performers were our local crowd and friends, parents of my classmates, friends we partied with, people we saw all the time. In Germany and much/most of Europe, the arts are an important part of daily life, and are subsidized by the government accordingly. All the large cities (I lived in Kassel, Germany) had their own opera, ballet, symphony, art and history museums. The performers and artists were our neighbors, although there was special respect for "our artistes." The performances were reasonable cost so that most people would attend regularly if they had any interest at all. That is why my aunt and uncle were in Germany to begin with - many talented artists and performers earned a good living that way. Not like here in the US where most have to have a "day job" to pay the bills, and only a very few can earn their living with their art.
At least that was how things were back then; it's been years since I lived in Europe. I think there is still more respect and support for the arts there.

The Florida Storytelling Festival will be doing live Teller video, as well as some workshops. But there are no tents going up in Mt Dorah. Next year, we hope.

I'm feeling kind of tired yesterday and today - maybe it is a side effect of that second Pfizer immunization. Hard to tell because there was a lot going on the past week, and I didn't always get 8 hours sleep since I start my clinic hours at 0800.

This show does have a lot of good music.
And it's interesting that even though this show was 20 years ago, some things don't change much.

But in 1999 everyone worried about Y-2-K and now we worry about the global pandemic. And politics are always are problem. Wonder what Maria Jette has to say about being a professional opera singer?
