Hah - it is a sneak contest Minnesota in January free trip! These contestants thought they were just donating to MPR but instead, if they "win" they have to go to Minnesota in winter.

Dreary here as well. Since we can't all (14 of us) gather for the usual festivities, tomorrow, my daughter, her husband and sons are meeting OUTSIDE IN MICHIGAN for us to give them their presents. Monday, we are meeting OUTSIDE at my other daughter's house for Christmas games and hot cocoa. Then on the 23rd, Elisabeth and her family (husband, four kids) are getting tested then coming over to our house for their presents (if positive, who knows!) Then Bill and I are driving to an AirBnB for a few days to celebrate alone. Christmas is icky this year.
Scott is getting his first vaccine on Tuesday.
We didn't get a Thanksgiving spike. Curve is flattening. Schools can reopen on January 15.

Does anyone really go to a 3 hour performance of Handel's Messiah? I think it is usually limited to the Hallelujah Chorus.

At least those folks would be equipped for it. I had to out and buy a new jacket for the Elko trip, but then it was so warm I didn't need it. And I'm sure I can't fit in the last suit I bought. I'd be in rough shape if a funeral came up, mine or anyone else's.

I looked at Andre Watts bio on wiki - he did NOT retire after this 1998 show. In fact it appears he is still teaching and performing, though he had to rework Ravel's concerto for the Left Hand so he could use his right hand, having sustained nerve damage to the left hand.

It might be taking some wriggling and arranging but at least no one has to fly or really travel to get together. It's the same with us here, less than a mile from our daughter and her family.

Jane, your Christmas festivities sound quite moderated but at least you are still gathering!
I think we will have nothing special for Christmas - maybe FaceTime visits with the kids. Or maybe Gen will gather us in her Zoom room, but I dunno, FaceTime suffices. We have managed to get 3 groups (us, Amber's family, and Spencer) but not 4 groups on FaceTime.

Early warning, I am not likely to be present next week or on the first Saturday in January 2021~. I am going to be crazy and drive from mild Florida up to a chilly central Pennsylvania for the holidays.

I spent the whole day calling positive covid cases . Fun times! However, since I have been working for the health department, I was able to spend vast sums on christmas presents for my grandchildren and even send money to my favorite politicians.

I did read your post, but you said you didn't know what he was doing now. According to Wiki he still has his teaching post, presumably still performing, but who knows, as that was of 2019 and 2020 is a big empty cipher for many.

DW do you have family in Central PA? I mean, having lived sort of nearby in western PA, I think it's pretty nice but really not a typical Christmas destination!
Jane, I'm reading GK's autobiography too. It's better than I thought it would be.
I also bought his novel about the virus but I seem to have misplaced it, but it must be around here somewhere.

He talked a lot about his insecurities and faults, but I still get the feeling he has a pretty good ego!

I have no family... just a romantic interest!! I visited a portion or two of Pennsylvania over the years... seen some covered bridges, been to Philadelphia, walked the grounds of Gettysbury. I'm looking forward to something new!

Pittsburgh is the nicest city I ever lived in, but that is western PA. I don't care for Philly, though it gets credit for its history, museums, and terrific restaurants.
When you went to GK's Christmas show, did y'all have sing-along Christmas carols?

The sing-alongs were always one of the best parts of the live shows.
I wonder if GK will consider doing Christmas reunion shows next year?

My niece lives in Philly. She's teaching literature and theatre through AmeriCorps. Unfortunately online. She graduated from UC Berkley last year. Then COVID, and the job market dried up.

And Jane, doc, have a wonderful, merry and blessed Christmas. Everyone stay safe and well, and we'll be here next week!

Y'all have a wonderful Christmas despite the peculiarities. The religious significance remains, and if that is not your inclination, then check out that old news story "Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus."
