I was distraught to see that I'd missed an important topic on "For Members Only" and am wondering how you all see things that I miss. I just look at the upper right hand corner for the NEW box, click on it, and see what threads have been active. Apparently that entirely omits For Members Only - so that occasional passers-by don't see it? But wouldn't they just be told they can't read the category unless they register? We've chuckled for years about my klutziness and I've thought I got better at Scrolling Down, but I think maybe I just don't get the mechanics of checking the whole board. Do you all start at the bottom of the page?

Personally I always go to the first page where all the different sections are listed, and check into the ones that have NEW posts. Since sometimes there are two threads with new posts, I check the top two or three until I see one that does NOT have NEW posts. Then I know I didn't miss one.
Don't despair gk. Despite that detailed strategy sometimes I miss posts too and I know I am not the only one. It's like how anyone over 40 worries they are developing dementia if they forget something. But if a teenager forgets something they just say "I forgot." And they are so self-absorbed I bet they forget more stuff than older adults.

I never even knew there was a NEW box. Boy, am I unobservant. I just go to the main page, scroll down, and look at the times since the last post. I then figure out if someone has posted something since I last was here and click and read (if I have time right then to do so). I then go to each section where I've noticed that someone has posted something recently and see if there are other threads in that section in which someone has also posted. Not very efficient, I suppose, and I'm sure I still miss a lot of stuff because I don't always have the time to peek at everything that has been posted (this is probably easier to do if you check in more often).

Thanks, ladies. I think I need to go to the bottom of the page, because the NEW box doesn't reflect our members' only posts. I've missed months of some very hard times in BB's life (turns out more than one thread) and apologize for what must have seemed callous silence. I know we all miss things now and again, but our private posts are always important, so those need to be checked no matter what.

First, let's smudge out the phrase "callous silence." And the feeling that goes with it. It is certainly not warranted.
Second, I miss stuff all the time. I start on the top right button called "Participated." It lists the threads I've already posted on that have new posts. Unless it has been a long time since I posted on that particular thread and the button forgets that I ever "Participated." If someone starts a new thread, it doesn't tell me that. Then, like Doc, I go to the home page and check for "New" boxes and new posts. I frequently miss the second thread with a new post because after I've read the first thread, the "new" box goes away on the home page, like Doc said.
Now the deal is, gk, in your personal profile you have chosen to be invisible. That means that your name is not listed on the bottom of the home page as being here nor having been here in the last 24 hours. I don't know with that setting if you can still see the "Participated" and "new" boxes. I would hope so.
Third, please accept my apologies for not being here very often lately. The Good News is, This Too Shall Pass.

Interesting about the New Participated box. I hadn't known what it meant until now. I clicked it and found the post about gull dinners on the dock.

Isn't it interesting how that goes?

I never really thought about what the "participated" meant - didn't realize it had anything to do with my own participation. I just focused on NEW and so missed things I hadn't participated in. I've made myself visible again, so maybe that will make some difference, though I don't understand it. The reason for going invisible was because I was logged in all the time, which made it look as if I were always there. Since I wasn't always keeping up, I thought that was misleading. Plus, there was all that talk about bots and random trolls, so I felt less open to attack. For now, I'll start at the bottom and also work harder at remembering to Scroll Down.

I am often logged in for long periods, and that usually means I fell asleep while logged in.
So far I haven't noted deleterious adverse effects of bots etc. That may be because I have numerous different antivirus and security packages operating. This is because I signed up for one a few computers ago and every time I buy a new computer, I buy the latest & greatest recommended by the salesperson but forget to cancel the old ones.

My method for checking posts/threads: I go straight to the "last 25 posts" and review them and comment when so moved. Then I check the "New" posts and scroll back to when I last made a comment, if I ever did, and read forward.
I miss plenty--missed plenty over the years--but life goes on. We do our best. Taking a swig from a bottle of ketchup never hurts, either.
