Just because he is playing the banjo does NOT mean that Steve Martin is not also a comedian!
The concert was terrific - we laughed until we cried. And those front row seats - well our feet were right up against the stage and we were about 5 feet from Steve Martin.
Steve said that he was visiting his wife's family in North Carolina and they attended a party where there was a "local band" playing - which apparently turned out to be the Steep Canyon Rangers. Steve liked them, and the rest is history...
The Rangers did a great a capella version of "Oh Won't You Sit Down" (Lord I can't sit down). Then Steve came back on stage, handed out a sheet with the words to "Atheists Ain't Got No Songs" and they all sang that a capella too.
I think J ane would have loved it! We all did too.
Their third and final encore was "King Tut." That was astounding, like a time warp, zapping back to SNL's first season back in 1975-1976. And when it came to the lyrics "Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia" - well there was quite an enthusiastic audience response.
Fort Tuthill Amphitheater is such a marvelous venue too - as you all saw when Thomas posted some photos from his walk around the neighborhood at the June 4 APHC there. "Imagine you are sitting out on a warm summer night, clear skies, beautiful stars, the scent of Ponderosa pines fills the air...oh wait...."
Howard says it was the greatest concert he'd ever been to. Good birthday present, huh?
