Actually, my digital camera is fine. However, since I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBook, the software that came with the camera (a Canon PowerShot G9) isn't playing nicely. It won't recognize the camera and I REALLY need to download my photos to my computer. *sigh* After poking about online tonight, it seems that one solution might be to purchase a card reader and download from that rather than directly from the camera. (Other solutions included using iPhoto or Image Capture, however I can't figure out how to do that - I may need to get a newer version of iLife in order to go the iPhoto route and the Image Capture instructions didn't seem to jive with my version of Image Capture). *more sighing* Does anyone have experience with card readers? Suggestions as to which one to buy (and confirmation that this would solve my problem)? Any other suggestions? As roges might say, I am perplexed

I don't know much about this, but when I connect my camera to my computer, it "launches" i-Photo, which eventually indicates it's ready to upload photos from the camera, and I can tell it to do so. (It also offers to delete them from the camera when it has finished uploading — basically you can have it do that, and keep using the same memory stick in the camera indefinitely, or you can leave them in the camera's memory and eventually need a new memory stick. Hope this helps at least a bit.

Lirio The G9 is a nice camera— Magnesium body isn't it?
I have a Macbook pro and a Cannon SX10 is I am running 10.5.8 Image browser (Cannon software) works great with Leopard. I believe the G9 was released before 10.6 and you might have older software First I would goggle search cannon, 10.6 upgrade. That should do the trick since you are not likely to be the first to have the problem. Cannon should have an upgrade for your software in their downloads section

Another thing— I have seen a raw camera update on Apples site. You may need to install that since the G9 shoots in raw format.

No luck. I downloaded that new ImageBrowser on the Canon page you mentioned, roges. I even had to give them the serial number for my camera to do so. At any rate, I'm still not having any luck transferring the photos from my camera to my laptop. It just sits there doing nothing. Well, actually the little light on the camera flashes for a moment, like it's trying to connect, and then nothing. No, wait, that's not quite true. I could see camera window in my dock. I forced it to quit and then reconnected my camera. The program popped up for one brief moment and then I got an error message that the program failed to initialize. Any more suggestions?

O.K. I figured out (FINALLY) how to open Image Capture and pull each photo (One. At. A. Time.) off the camera. They are now sitting as individual jpgs in my Pictures folder. I guess I could put them in a folder based on the date that I took them, but the point is, this used to happen automatically every time I connected my camera!!! I. Am. Not. Happy. Plus, the program knew which photos had not yet been transferred and only transferred those. I did not have to pick and choose each one based on those tiny little thumbnails!
UGH!
I love this camera, but I am very unhappy with the way it interacts with Snow Leopard! The only reason I updated to Snow Leopard is because my 14-year-old got an iTouch for his birthday (his music is on my MacBook in another user account) and the iTouch required Snow Leopard! I was perfectly content with Tiger!
Roges, are you using Leopard or Snow Leopard?

Call me a coward but I'm sticking with leopard until it no longer functions.
Lirio are you connecting the camera with both the camera and the computer on? You should always have both devices on when you connect them.
Did you install the Raw camera update from Apples website

I use a card reader - it's so much faster than downloading from the camera. I'm currently using a SanDisk ImageMate All-in-one. Sorry to hear about your software woes. When you were at the Canon site, did you get the latest updates for everything, or just the Image Browser program? Roges, I doubt she's shooting in Raw - probably just Jpegs... I actually have better luck when attaching my camera to my Mac by connecting first and then switching on the camera. Lirio, do you know how to repair permissions on your hard drive using Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder)? Sounds like something is conflicting with the Camera Window launch. Just found this on the Canon site: 2. ImageBrowser 6.6.0b Updater does not include EOS Utility and CameraWindow, the applications used for connecting cameras. When downloading images, please use a memory card, or install EOS Utility or CameraWindow from the CD-ROM bundled with the product (if you wish to connect your camera using a USB cable). The users of ImageBrowser 6.4 can continue using CameraWindow as is. To update ImageBrowser from ImageBrowser 6.3 or earlier, download ImageBrowser 6.5.3 Updater. I'm assuming you updated to 6.6.0? If it was me, I'd trash your existing Canon Utilities folder and reinstall from the original CD, then update to ImageBrowser 6.5.3 Updater (Mac OS 10.4-10.6) tinyurl.com/4tarazeIt's the seventh item in the list: ibx-upd-6-5-3-18-u01-8l.dmg.gz ImageBrowser 6.5.3 Updater (Mac OS 10.4-10.6) 07/06/2010 66.08MB

Thanks Thomas. I will try that tomorrow. Right now I'm just too tired to deal with it. And thank you, too, roges and joew for your suggestions.

Ah I didn't think about a permissions problem. Strange since I've had to do it almost every time I boot lately
Hmm every camera that I've owned has warned against powering on or off while connected. I don't doubt you Guru Thomas, but what is up with that? Must be something similar to the two pages of safety warnings that accompany a pair of safety glasses.
The G9 will shoot raw images you might want to check that resolution setting just in case. Wouldn't hurt to download the 10.6 Raw image update just in case.

Interesting, I bought a Lacie rugged external HD and wanted to format it to be my startup disk but didn't have my system disks in town so I had the guys at the Apple store use their boot disk tom do the job. Instead of transferring my OS they just installed 10.6.6 After transferring all mt apps With the preferences and permissions intact Cannon Camera Window DC does not open or opens and hangs.

Did they wipe your previous OS off your internal, or can you still boot from it? If so, does the Canon Camera Window still work there?
Sounds like 10.6.x isn't playing nice with the Canon Utilities.
Which version do you have on your computer? Just curious if it's the newer version I mentioned, or the one I suggested to Lirio that's supposed to still work ...

Camera window is 7.2.0.4 created 4/6/08 Image Browser(which I love) is 6.2.0.17
Actually Image browser still works but i have to open Image capture and Download but of course it doesn't put the images into separate folders according to date.
Ive been kind of messing with the opportunity to see if there is a better way deal with my photos but for now I think not. I don't see a big difference in 10.6 but I haven't upgraded all of I life yet.
Thanks Thomas I will get the cannon upgrade
Oh by the way the reason I did the external was that there is a dead sector in the system partition of my internal disk. I need to erase it and reformat but I wanted to make sure everything made it through intact. I have beat this poor MBP the Deck is held on with duct tape the bottom two rows of keys dont work and the trackpad is shot. It still works though, With the apple keyboard and the magik mouse
Thanks for the advice my friend.
