I watched a documentary film last night on Sundance about the adverse environmental impact of the coal industry on West Virginia. It's called "Burning the Future: Coal in America." It was very well done. Coal mining has always been the main industry in WV, and with the recent national emphasis on clean coal and less reliance on foreign oil, the coal industry is rapidly expanding. This is often accomplished via strip mining, and since WV is all mountains (the only state 100% within Appalachia), the common coal company practice is to knock the top off a mountain to do open strip mining. Then environmental catastrophe ensues. I lived in WV for 10 years and was somewhat aware of the problem, but still this film really opened my eyes. I highly recommend seeing it and visiting the website www.burningthefuture.org/show.asp?content_id=14089
