I was surprised to see that when I typed in the URL for prairiechatter.proboards83.com in the Yahoo search, I was given a list of possible sites, all prairiechatter.proboards sites such as joew's profile page, a page where Gracie talked about being worried about Grizzy's health, etc. I didn't realize that stuff would show up in a regular search.

Ooooh. Maybe by googling we can find out Thomas' real identity, as we discussed a few days ago.

I've always thought this board was relatively open, something Trusty has implied when he's said it's open to anyone who wants to register and he won't be responsible for monitoring. But I don't know how someone finds the site without knowing the name or the proboards number. Is it linked by key words in some way, maybe from Gather? I googled my name and found all kinds of things I wish weren't out there, but I didn't see anything from this forum. (now don't everybody go hunting, please, there's nothing juicy ) So I think someone would have to know your handle and which boards to search. Now I'm curious about whether it's possible to erase a post or profile page from google. The profile pages are my chief concern because I don't even remember some of them. Is there a proboards index?

gk, what do you mean by a proboards index? What information would you find on such an index?

The names of the boards. If one were looking for Prairie Home fans, maybe Prairiechatter would look promising. I did go to the home page and didn't see anything like that, so I doubt it exists. If you have to sign up to create a board before finding a list of them, that would be awfully clunky.

(BTW, I haven't found a list, either.) (Wikipedia says that as of June 26, 2008, ProBoards had five (5) paid staff members! I find that extremely interesting.) Excuse me...I need to go outside for a satellite photograph...

Make sure you're wearing your Speedo or, at least, a thong; we don't want to see you on Youtube. "Boys Gone Wild!"

this has nothing to do with privacy here on this site, but I just tried to sign up for a newsletter on writing markets and suddenly my e-mail address book was accessed. I think they nabbed most of the e-dresses before I could close the window.

Wow, I didn't know that was possible. How could you tell? One more thing to make me feel computer-challenged.
The worst that can happen is we'll be inundated by mad writer promos, right?

A bit too cryptic, Thomas. Macs are more secure? Yes. For the most part, there are NO current viruses that affect Macs. Virus protection is virtually not needed. That's not to say someone couldn't write a virus for a Mac, it's just that there's such a limited user base with respect to PCs that it wouldn't have the sort of far-reaching effect most virus writers are after. I know a few years ago the Dept. of Defense switched to Macs - don't know if that's still the case. Tougher to hack, no spyware/malware issues, no Microsoft "holes" that constantly need fixing. To be fair, Apple comes out with security patches every now and then, but to nowhere near the extent that MS does. And for people who know very little about computers, Macs are FAR and away easier to use and configure than PCs. All of my friends and family who come to me for computer advice have ultimately switched to Macs. For the basic user, in my opinion, it's really silly not to. Meanwhile, we Mac users can surf the net without fear, and even if we receive an e-mail attachment that we inadvertently open, 99.99% of the time nothing will happen.

I had one window open with my downloaded e-mail (juno.com) and one window open to that writer site. When I clicked on to sign up for the newsletter, I suddenly heard a clicking sound, like a stick was dragging along a corrigated metal fence. I sat stumped for a second, switched over to look at my e-mail window and saw my address book scrolling down although I wasn't scrolling.
Scary.

The new macs are on Intel processors and can easily run windoze (two computers in one), which somewhat justifies the price. So you can run your favorite windoze games and programs and still run your email & web surfing in the mac mode to prevent viruses. Sweet. I had that "scrolling" happen to me once - on my mac! It amazingly stopped when I lifter my finger off the "return" key.
