Yeah, 'cause if you don't, we'll just make up stories anyway! ~B~ So what are you guys anyway, jealous? Or just appealing to prurient interest? Well, for the record, dwarnold has regretfully declined the invitation, not that a dock/Doc would ever violate confidentiality anyway. That means, no "kiss and tell!"

Is anyone besides docK here going? Okay, yes, I know Thomas is also going. I believe I'd mentioned before about my friend's mother who will be sailing this next July 9th. Kristin, if you happen to run into her--Mary Larson from Owatonna, Minnesota. She's fabulous white/gray hair and intense blue-Swede-blue eyes. I just saw her last week end and she reminded me that the reason she's going on the cruise is because of me. Because I had so much fun on the Canada cruise and couldn't stop talking/writing about it. I hope y'all have a wonderful, relaxing, thrilling, exciting, memorable, safe-safe-safe time!! Bon voyage!

gk, would you say that you go on with your mum rather well? My mom, and I love her, exhausts me. I'd love to spend some quality time with her, but I just don't know that I could take it. Any suggestions on how to take the time with her I'd like, but to walk like a duck while doing so?
walk like a duck=let it roll right off my back

I just noticed that Thomas is signed in here right now! Didn't the cruise begin yesterday? Or is that just when (I think) Dock was leaving Washington? Anyway, where ever you are Thomas, Dock, and the rest, happy sailing! or cruising!

News from the cruise:
Docked in Trondheim, and I'm finally ready to link by with reality by logging on.
We are all having a fabulous time, with action close to 24/7, though I've had a wimpy need for sleep and even a couple of naps.
We dine at the late seating, and I'm at the same table with j* and her mother, who are excellent company, along with a couple from Wisconsin. Lots of music and jokes, choir practice nearly every morning, as well as "Coffee with Garrison" most mornings.
Norway is beautiful - the themes seem to be waterfalls and seafood, complemented by very late sunsets. The cruise bulletins claim that we are not in "the land of the midnight sun," but when I went back to my cabin after midnight, it was still quite bright outside. Official sunset was 11:04 pm.
I have not yet met Thomas, though I know he is here. Tony is doing the broadcast engineering, and he tells me Thomas is doing mostly photography.
I'll post more later, as I am too busy having fun right now ;D

All righty now. I'm at the hotel in Copenhagen, having "disembarked" this morning. I think I am not the only one who spent the afternoon napping, all worn out from the cruise.
A great time was had by all, with an eventful and music-filled day yesterday, a PHC show last night, and a closing party in the Crow's Nest afterward.
I'm going out to dinner with shipboard friends tonight, then flying out tomorrow morning, to Frankfurt, Germany, then non-stop to Denver, where I have a few days of business meetings before heading home.
There were several Scotch tasting sessions on board, and I am hoping I might purchase a nice duty-free bottle of single malt Scotch at either Copenhagen or Frankfurt airports to take home to my husband as a gift (he did not have any need for a Norwegian sweater or a troll). I'm not a Scotch drinker myself, so any suggestions would be welcome.

Doc!
Anything with the name on the label with "Glen" in it, should be a single malt whisky.
But if you can obtain "The Macallen", this is a treasure - but anything more than 8 years old is just a wheeze to extract extra dollars from you. No Scotch whisky more than 3 years old is any different - except for the rarity value.
But please observe the one golden rule. If it doesn't say "Bottled in Scotland" on the label - it is not the genuine product.
I could elaborate at length, but I don't think I can really add anything right now that would add to your selection.

OT, but, Brit, are you feeling the effects of the rain there in Maidenhead? Any significant flooding or troubles with tap water?

Thanks Brit. I figured you'd be the expert!
I think that is just the information I need for my purchase. I'll ask at the check-in counter about carrying my liquid purchase onboard. I know the security forces are very concerned about "explosives" - and then, if they confiscate such a bottle of single malt Scotch, well...there will be a nice party at their home that night.
I hope you are not being washed away Brit. The news reports of flooding look quite dire - shortages of potable water, offices closed. The reports seem to focus on central England, so perhaps the London area is not affected so badly.
At disembarkation this morning, Garrison was at the exit in person beginning at 0715, shaking the hand of every single passenger (over 1,000 people) as they exited the cruise terminal. I was impressed.
He commented several times about his "lack of social skills" and the fact that the cruise was a perfect opportunity to get out, and meet and talk to people. The cruise provided the perfect captive audience! I had thought he was the quintessential private person.
But one day I was walking past his cabin toward a Pat Donohue concert on the Navigation Deck, just as he exited into the hallway. I said "Good afternoon" and continued on, thinking he wanted his privacy. But no, he said "That's a good looking ice cream cone you have. Where did you get it?"

Ahem. Did the term "Dopey" enter into the conversation? I considered a reference to "Dopey," but then decided that I didn't want to go there. In retrospect - if I'd known that he cared enough about his fans to graciously shake hands with each passenger, I might have brought up the subject. And of course I offered to share my rocky road ice cream cone, and gave GK directions to the Lido daily from 1:00 to 5:00pm for the ice cream buffet, should he want his very own. He decided he should pass on the ice cream, perhaps in consideration of his doctors' advice or something. I said nothing along those lines; he is not my patient. And I walked past Garrison's cabin at least once or twice a day - it was between my own cabin and the Navigation Aft Deck, where there were daily musical performances.

Also - Garrison has been invited to perform at the Grammy Awards in December. It is the 50th Anniversary celebration, so the producer would like him to sing his version of "Forever Young," perhaps accompanied by a slide show retrospective of the 50 years of Grammy Award winners.
My next-door-cabin neighbor on the ship, Sam Weiss, is retired from a career with ABC, but apparently he will be helping to produce the Grammy television show. Sam loved Garrison's rendition of Dylan's song as he performed it one night on the ship, so the next morning at "Coffee with GK," he asked Garrison if he would do it. Initially he said no (on the grounds that he would be "terrified"!!??), but Sam told me later that he has reconsidered and will be there.
It sounded rather preliminary to me, but Sam seems to have a knack for getting things done, so tune in come December. I think GK singing Dylan's "Forever Young" over a photo-review of 50 years of Grammy Awards would be a very moving close to the show, don't you?

I hope I am making sense, as I am a bit jet lagged. I got off the Lufthansa flight in Denver (ever so much smoother than the outbound SAS trip), cleared Customs and Immigration in 20 minutes (!!!), got into my rental car and headed for the Rockies. The hotel check-in clerk thought I was nuts when I asked her what time is it (7:15), is that morning or evening (evening), and is it Wednesday yet (no).
Visions of Norway, fjords, waterfalls, the Veendam, the Shoe Band, Little Mermaid, everything, all swirling through my head. Looking out my window on the Beaver Creek "Town Center" I see people ice skating on the rink in shorts. It is 80 degrees out. It is hard to tell if I am in Scandanavia or Colorado. Which day is it? Am I hallucinating?
On the ship I kept saying "I can sleep when I get home, as there is too much to do now." This would be a good time for some rhubarb pie, and then some of that much-promised shut eye.

I hope books won't read this: I prefer GK on that song because I love how he did it on the Oct 26, 2002 show. It's a sentimental thing, really.
I can't hardly believe I'm admitting this so that my dear bookie can hear me. gulp

I'm amazed that liquor holds such an audience and an appreciative one at that!
When I used to drink, I usually had a goal in mind. Bouquet was not it. Now, when I have a glass of wine, it's just a few ounces, downed whilst I prepare supper.

At Brit's suggestion, I bought the bottle of Macallen, and when I get home I'll print out his instructions to go along with the gift.
No problems with confiscation at Frankfurt or in Denver, though when I fly from Denver back to Seattle, I'll have to put the bottle in my checked bag to avoid having my dangerous liquid seized.
I noted the story of the TSA security "success" in detecting packages of cheese and clay in checked baggage that might have been a dry run for explosives. Were people taking gifts home from vacation, or was there really a terrorist plot? Wouldn't it make sense to screen for explosives (that swab test thing) as well as X-ray things that "look like they might be explosives?"
