(I started to call this thread "Post from the Host", but .... nahhhh...) Anyway, I'll be using this thread to notify y'all of little changes here (The big ones we can vote on.). One has been the hard-to-read buttons (whether in a blue bar or not ("quote", "modify", "delete", etc.)). I don't know why the default was small outlined lettering (kinda tacky, too), but I have replaced them with easier-to-read buttons. Hope you like them. (Don't tell me if you don't .)

Trusty pasted up a fab-u-lous varying banner at the top of the home page. Whooohoooo!! I love, love, love it. Now I must say that I have been feeling more and more comfortable, supported, and intimate (!!) with y'all than ever before. My heart is really taken by each of you. This place feels good.

Thank you, slb2. There's a story about that (Isn't there a story behind everything?), and I'll get to it when I get a little time.
-----
In my quest to make things more easy to read, I just changed the fonts and spelled both "Verdana" and "Arial" correctly this time. Has it made any difference on anybody's computer???
(Strawberry's computer was showing a "Times" type font (She said it would pick the most common font if it didn't recognize it, and how could it if they're misspelled?), but it didn't change when I corrected the fonts, Maybe a cookie...)
Anyway, let me know if there is any change.

CHECK OUT THE NEW LINKS!
Add links of your own, too. We want to find more streaming stations, weather in your area, and anything you would think helpful to us at this Site. (Please no direct solicitations.)
Thank you! We are growing together.

I just changed the number of posts per page from 15 to the maximum number of 30. Let me know if you have any problems.

Here's something that's difficult for me. This place is just too big. There's so many places to check to see if I missed anything new. I wish it were more consolidated.
So shoot me, I find it overwhelming. ;-)

I found a nice feature at the bottom of the main page which allows you to see the most recent ten (10) posts, notwithstanding the specific thread they were posted to. This may help some!!! ;D

Good going, dw.
slb — I know what you mean, but I think once we get used to the format of the site, it won't be much worse than the former Chatterbox. Over there, I usually did not even look at the parts having to do with comments on the show, guest suggestions, and the like, because I could, and did, go directly to chit-chat. Here, not only do we have all the discussion areas right in front of us, but switching from one to another is easy. We don't see all the threads until we choose one area or another, but that keeps the homepage manageable.
Maybe it would be okay to have every thread displayed on the homepage, but I'm not sure we need it. I just open one area after another, and see where there is activity on a thread I'm interested in (which is most of them).

ProBoards has it... (I still think that sounds like a skateboard company.) Anyway, ProBoards has it set up on these levels (and it's the way most forums are set up): FORUM - (the whole thing) CATEGORY - (THE SHOW, THE CHIT-CHAT, etc.) BOARD - (The Show Thread, The Lives of the Chatterboxers, Links, etc. SUB-BOARD - (We don't have them.) THREAD - (New Stuff, Books, etc.) POST - (what you're reading) We have the capability to get more complicated with Sub Boards if we wanted to, but that doesn't need to happen any time soon. We've already consolidated some Boards (ie: "Miscellaneous" going to "Getting Creative" (and "Computer Discussions" may move to "Forum Discussions" if it doesn't get any more traffic; we'll see.)). Anyway, if you see where a particular board could be absorbed into another without it being too disrupting, please suggest it. This is still a developing Forum for all of us; improvements are always welcome. I don't won't to spread too thin either, but it's nice to know that it will be a long time before our words of wisdom get pushed off to page 2 or 3 and into oblivion - even beyond the "most recent posts".

I think you're on the right track, Trusty, giving us time to get used to the present format before doing anything very drastic. Maybe at some point, some tweaking will be neede, but this is so much easier to use than the Yahoo site (which was an important thing to have instantly available, and which we probably could have eventually got used to), and for me at least easier than the Gather site. New pages load much quicker than the vast majority of message boards I've seen.

Yes, I do use the "last ten posts" button. And I do really like how each thread has a "new" button displayed when there is something new for me. And thanks joeW for acknowleging the importance of having something, namely Yahoo.groups, available before it was too late. (I know, I've already whined about feeling displaced, not so much that I want Trusty's job, which I DON'T, but that I set something up that wasn't sufficient. Poor baby/crybaby--that suz.)
But that's it, absolutely, joeW. I just need to get accustomed to this site. It has a lot of gizmoes that I find way fun.

slb — I diidn't notice you whining; and I'd certainly never say that the Yahoo group was insufficient. It would have srved well enough, which is what sufficient means. I'm sure it is disappointing that your sufficient solution to our immediate need got replaced. I know I'd feel disappointed if I were the one who had set up the Yahoo group, only to have another website take its place. But you did provide the bridge to where we are. You made it possible for us to stay together.
I think I'll exalt you for it once I post this.

I set something up that wasn't sufficient. You have that all wrong. slb. You set up the lifeboat. You saved us from drowning. The fact that some of us just couldn't get comfortable in the lifeboat in no way diminishes your contribution! I am just grateful that you were around at the appropriate time and knew what to do. All I would have been able to offer would have been a hearty, "Farewell," as we all jumped overboard.

slb — assuming you mean a true friend, not the real world, I think the word to use is "treuer" (masculine nominative singular of "treu").
|
|
|
Post by joew on Oct 2, 2006 11:02:33 GMT -5
Not so fast. Maybe it should be "wahrer." I just remembered a song titled "Wahre Freundschaft." Perhaps in this context "wahr" has the connotation of "genuine," while "treu" is more like "faithful."
Where is Siegbrunn when we need her?

Thanks lirio, that really bolsters my tottering ego. I do!! feel so much better hearing those words. I know them to be true. Or is that wahrer? Or maybe vrai? oui. it's vrai in French.

SLB: you appear to be karmaed up the wazoo, so someone obviously loves you!
I wonder if "karma" and "wazoo" have ever been used in the same sentence before. And they say there's nothing new under the sun!

I can't post anything on the help thread, so I'm struggling to find the answer to something. When I log in, there is the option to view the 10 most recent posts. Because of my physical location, there are many more postings than 10 that have been made since I last visited. I asked a question on one of the threads (I can't remember which one there are so many) so short of going through all the threads and all the pages therein, I run out of time to make any responses to those remarks. Or was that your intention Trusty I had asked what the difference between a new member and a junior member was.

Dinah informs me that "Whar" is true and "Wharer" is more true.
It is her second language - being brought up there after World War Two when her father was a senior commanding officer in various cities, including Berlin.

Yes, Brit. That is my problem, too. Sometimes it might help to go to your profile page and check on your own last messages. The profile page will list your last four or so messages.
I think we need to get used to things here for at least a month <gasp> before requesting changes, which I believe trusty can do.
Your question was answered by joew, I think. He noted that once a member has posted over 50 comments, s/he became a junior member. Keep posting newbie, and you, too, can promote yourself to junior.

Nah! I'm sticking to getting karma points. Well, that didn't work did it? Weeps: But I don't want to be an Junior in English, I want to be a Major in English. But I've figured it out that I am not going to get it this way. Sorry, but it is getting late here, so goodnight America as I know it.

Just got home after being out of town, so I can't spend too much time in one area. I had a feeling about the number of "most recent posts", and glad to see more have been concerned. I just raised the number to 25. Please let me know if that will work. There is also a foreign language converter link in the "Tools" section with other dictionaries that we can use. There will be more "tools" coming when I get the time. The "promotions" to junior member are given by computer, which plays favorites to people who post the most . It's done on a VERY progressive scale (something like 50 - 100 - 1000 - 5000, etc.). It may be explained in the help tutorials.

Dear Mr. Ad-min-is-trat-or,
In the future at the beginning of The Show Thread, please may we have an intro of the stars appearing on APHC Show that week?
