Do pencil sharpener blades need to be sharpened? Is that even possible? Do they simply become dull and less effective? Does one have to replace them every so often, like brake pads? Am I just buying crappy pencils?
I swear, our pencil sharpener takes forever to get a good point on a pencil. I'm talking the electric type, not the sort I remember from elementary school, where you turn the handle. I hate to think that one must chuck them in the garbage every so often and buy a new one, but perhaps that is what must be done.
I'd also like to know why there is never a sharpened pencil around when I need one. UGH!

There is scarcely such a thing as a goodly sharpened pencil when one needs it, which is nearly ever far from my observations, lirio, the blonde in the Thunderbird. Why would she ever need a pencil anyway? Oh. Phone numbers. Smiling at you.
Our pencil sharpener will only sharpen one side of a pencil. Makes my eyebrows look danged stoopid. Yeah, no, yeah, no. Well part of them are there.
And if you get a good enough point on a pencil it is certain that it will break when you put it to paper.
The cheap pens don't work so well around here either.

While we're at stoopid questions, which one of my kittens is not covering their poopies in the cat box, why, and how can I remedy it?

We replace our electric pencil sharpeners frequently at the office. They seem designed to wear out and have to be replaced. A pretty good racket if you ask me. Is there any incentive anymore in making anything that lasts? However, wooden pencils that need sharpening are rather old school. It's like trying to cut steak with a butter knife. My recommendation is the Zebra M 301 .5mm stainless steel refillable mechanical pencil. Click and the lead is refreshed. They perform beautifully and look good. I happened onto them by accident in law school and I've used them ever since. www.expotv.com/videos/Office_Products/Zebra_M-301_Mechanical_Pencil/34,13044/

Speaking of technology, they make litter boxes that flush themselves, anj. They sense when the cat leaves and a rake goes through the litter and picks up the clumps and solid stuff and puts it away in a covered container.

But I've always worried, Star, that they may malfunction just as pencil sharpeners do and start scooping while one of my babies is still vulnerable forever putting them off using the indoor potty.
Otherwise they prefer using my herb garden which doesn't seem to hurt the herbs. Wanna come to dinner someday and have tarragon chicken? Hee.

They have a sensor a time delay -- they don't go off the cat is long gone.

I love pencils and I'm going to check out the one linked by j*. I'd much rather write with pencil than pen. Something about the way it feels to rub graphite on mulched wood product.

Suze, I just have no idea what to say about people who like to use pencils. It seems like a serious fear of making a mistake which can't be erased. I just use a Bic and then make stoopid scratches all over the place. Be brave and go boldly into that error place is my motto. This computer stuff saves face. Well. Maybe. Laughing at myself here.
I've never understood the interest in wanting a good writing tool but I do know that Mom always wants "the best" when she writes. Guess I don't get it.
Maybe when you write well, you desire something befitting that.
Those guys on the beach sure did a good job. Lookit how perfect their letters are. Ah. Good teachers are so overlooked.

So, it's pencils is it? Or, should I say, it's pencils izzit?

Serious fear of making an uneraseable mistake, eh? I'm so not of that mindset, the thought amuses me. It's the mistakes that turn into the masterpieces.
I like how the pencil lead lays down on the paper. I like the way it looks, taking up more space with it's thicker lines than a pen. It smudges, but never gloops.
I like the tactile sensations of using a #2.5 pencil.

I like the tactile sensations of using a #2.5 pencil. Personally, I like a totally round pencil, not the six-sided ones that one usually finds.

New stupid question of the day - why can't I get that mechanical pencil video to play on my computer? Can't help you there. I assume you don't have whatever player loaded on your computer that it requires. The Zebra M 301 is round. It does have some nifty, subtle ridges at the grip point. It is pure function and has a nice, clean aesthetic.

1. You didn't click "play." 2. You blinked and missed it; it was a long blink. (btw, lirio, are you getting enough sleep?) 3. Your saavy boys have added a delete button so that any nerdy-to-them video is unplayable on your computer. 4. The poor kid on the video is tired as bezeezus from re-enacting that video for the past 48 days since he first posted it. (And you thought it was recorded.) 5. Mr. Lirio doesn't want you to watch cute teen boys talk about intelligent stuff--aside from your own cute teen boys--so he blocked it.

So now, about this litter box. I read about it, but it cost $300, which, if it actually worked as stated, would be worth it. But you are supposedly never to put new litter in it; it used plastic stuff that it then washes and returns. I am very curious, since cleaning litter is not my favorite household chore (I have no favorite household chore), and the cost of litter for two large cats is pretty darned expensive. So does anyone have personal experience with these devices? (Well, not person, but, you know what I mean.)

Hey babycakes, you're dissing yourself! So, the play button? When you click on the link you get a picture of a teenage boy holding a mechanical pencil. In the same frame that encapsulates the boy, directly beneath boy, is a small red triangle, pointing to the right. Click that, maybe even double click it.

You should be getting a commission on these pencils, you know.

slb, your instructions worked perfectly. Initially, I didn't see the boy holding the mechanical pencil because I didn't have the active-x whatever installed.
Dang, I've got to buy one of these (or even two!) after all of this trouble. Don't expect me to post a video review of it, though. Shoot, I haven't even managed to procure an avatar.

lirio, when you mentioned about not us not expecting to see you post your own video review that reminded me that I have a deadline for a video I'm suppose to do! HolyHotCakes! I competely forgot about it.
I'm in the worse procrastination state ever.

I'm sittin' here with a 1200 word article due by the end of the day. I have lots of it done but am having trouble getting in all into 1200 words. And a 350 word article that I have yet to begin is due at the same time. La de da.
It's an interview with a dignitary who used all the buzzwords--strategic, leverage, partnership, resources, proactive, operational, needs driven and on and on and on. Maybe I should just list all the words and let it go at that.

OK The following is the most stupid question of the day.
What video are y'all talking about?
And now the most uninteresting post of the day.
I detest ballpoint pens and only use them when absolutely necessary. I either use a fountain pen or a pencil (not the wooden ones that need sharpening, but one that matches my fountain pen). I use .7mm diameter and it never needs sharpening.

If you click on the link in j*'s post #2, you will find a teenager giving his opinion of the mechanical pencil that she recommends. Er, that is, if you know what you are doing. I had a few technical difficulties.
