We've been so stunned by this event, and maybe so overwhelmed by news stories and live TV, that we haven't mentioned Boston. I'm not sure how much we'll want to say, but this Oliphant cartoon speaks for us all. We're a nation of immigrants with open arms.

That's the sadness of it, and the near-incomprehensibility.
I hadn't seen it, and it has brought tears to my eyes.
Thanks for sharing.

Golly, Joe, I kinda forgot you were in Boston! Were you near the epicenter? Did you get stuck at home? What's the main emotion in Boston right now? I would have a hard time not being very, very angry.

Thanks for asking, Jane. I'm actually out in the suburbs, over 15 miles from the scene of the explosions and the gunfight. I think President Obama said it very well at the service on Thursday: "We don't cower in fear. We carry on." There is great admiration for all who took part in the rescue efforts — police, fire, emt's hospital workers, and above all the civilians who ran toward the scene to help the injured, instead of fleeing.
Modified to add: I had tickets for a play on Wednesday and the symphony on Thursday. I went to both. Everything seemed completely normal at the theater. At Symphony Hall, they were examining all bags. On the subway, there were no unusual measures in effect. Of course, Friday was a different story, but things seemed completely back to normal when I went to Boston this evening.

Glad to hear that news from you, Joe. I'm sure it was very different for you when it affected your home, compared to us following it on the news.

Yes, Joe, and it will be much harder to recover from. I don't think any of us will forget it, but every tragedy seems to fade a little for those not directly affected, just as New Town has. I hesitated even to bring it up, not knowing what you might be feeling. I'm glad you're feeling a return to sanity, but your church family and friends must be badly shaken.
