Maria Muldaur's current tour is to promote her new album, "Don't You Feel My Leg - the Naughty Bawdy Blues of Blue Lu Parker." It is on the front page at this website: www.mariamuldaur.com/Jay bought a copy of the new album and I hope he will soon review it, and give a concert review too. I bought a couple other albums, and will order this one soon. I will give you a heads up; one of the best tunes is called "Loan Me Your Husband." Yeah, those 1930's and 1940's tunes were quite bawdy but ever so much more artful than today's rap language.

My laptop is on the fritz and I'm having to scratch out everything on my phone. So, please, you'll have to wait until I can sit down to a proper keyboard. There's plenty to be said about Maria, the music, the venue and the crowd! I'll bring it, I promise!

Yeah, those 1930's and 1940's tunes were quite bawdy but ever so much more artful than today's rap language. So, finally, here I am. It was quite an evening; I hadn't really known what to expect. About Maria, or Ambrose West or any of it. The last "club" I'd been in was with my brother and sister a few years ago. We'd been to a wedding in West Virginia, and my brother had gotten wind of another concert; Pokey Lafarge was opening for the Carolina Chocolate Drops in Asheville. It was a dive! I had no idea what the place had been originally. Some kind of theater I guess, lots of standing room and only a few seats, though we found places to sit in the balcony. We got lucky; it turned out to be the last public performance before the Chocolate Drops breakup. We got lucky again with Maria. Ambrose West turned out to be an old, repurposed church! We entered the vestry, showed our tickets and got banded. For those feeling the joy of community, there was a bar in the basement for fellow-shipping and adult sacramental beverages. The main sanctuary was the performance site. I doubt it held 75 people, sitting on folding chairs. I'd ordered the better tickets, guaranteeing seats in the first three rows. Doc and I wound up on the middle aisle, front row! It was about the crowd you'd expect, old hippy activists and some burnt out rockers. No hipsters here, by golly, not a man bun in sight! These guys wore proper ponytails pulled together from whatever hair they had left. The ladies were showing fringe and purple headbands. I had to admire these cultural revolutionary warriors, still willing to let the freak flag fly! Maria had a rough time of it; the place was close and hot. She alternated between begging the sound-man for a fan, and giving him neck-slicing motions as he was screwing up her mikes. One of the ladies in the crowd came to her rescue with a small, portable , battery powered personal fan. I think she had run out and purchased it. Just let me say these picture you've seen of Maria on her website are not up to date. She's been traveling the same, hard road a lot longer than any of us, and it showed. Things were kind of wrinkled, a little loose and floppy. But when she'd get a rimshot from her drummer, slap her butt with the tambourine and give you a "look" you knew the fire still burned! And there were no other guys in my immediate vicinity, so I know she was all mine. Oh Mamma. The little samples of tunes she put on her website don't come close; they are a small part of the tribute she's paying to Blue Lu Barker, one of the greatest influences on Maria's musical life. Make no mistake, this is grown-up fare, you won't hear it at any school program or playing for the shoppers over the speakers at Publix. But it's fun! It's not aggressive or threateing, it's not blue and in your face, it's just good, get down music that will have you up and boogieing. It's bluesy and jazzy and she's backed up by a great group of New Orleans musicians who know just what is needed to make the music real and contemporary. As opposed to the formulaic, heartless drivel that passes for pop music today. Give it a try.

Jay nails it pretty good. I loved the show! I wasn't so surprised by the re-purposed church as I recently had the same thing in Charlotte when we (me and some APHC cruise friends up for a reunion) went to see some of our favorites from the cruise.
When Maria first came on stage I thought we had made a mistake and showed up at a nursing home where some old lady had kindly agreed to put on a show for the old folks. But once she got going, it was the same old Maria as always, just with a few wrinkles. Well I've got a few wrinkles myself, to be honest, so who am I to talk? Maria is, after all, 75 years old and I thought her show was as good, or even better (because of the Blu Lu Parker tunes), than any other time I'd seen her. She used to play in Greenwich Village with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band fairly often back in the day when I lived in NYC, and I've also seen her in the Bay area a few times.
Jay, one thing. I too thought they were a great NOLA band, very authentic. So I inquired of the guitar player and he said they all live in the Bay area, but he said he'd lived in New Orleans in the past. Well they sure seemed Bluesiana to me!
BTW for you folks in the Twin Cities, she will be performing at The Vieux Carre in St. Paul on October 30!

Happy Mother's Day to all of us from Brandi Carlile, and especially to those of us who have Mothers who are out of cell phone range. Our Mothers felt this way, too.

I fear I might be burying this link by putting it here, but here is the appropriate space. I ran across Bob Dylan by Kids and it's not bad. I especially wanted Books to have a listen.

More online concerts!Covid-19 may have caused the cancellation of MerleFest 2020, but many of the artists have agreed to honor Doc Watson by contributing some songs and memories. Also note that if you are so inclined, you can purchase your tickets for MerleFest 2021 now at their website, even though they don't yet have the line-up. The event will close out with Doc's final performance on the Creekside Stage in 2012. To view the event, you can tune into MerleFest's Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram accounts during the week. My personal hints and highlights:
The Doc Watson performance (which must have been inserted from 2012) is historic, as he died just a few weeks later, on May 29.
Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest guitar player you never heard of; he and Pat Donohue are friends or at least "birds of a feather." He's playing with Jason Isbell, also very good. Last December, Gen and I went to a concert Tommy did with Jerry Douglas - all the way to Seattle on "a school night" and well worth the effort.
Sam Bush is a terrific mandolin player, one that everyone has herd of, and he is even better than Chris Thile IMHO.
Steep Canyon Rangers are great and I always go see them if they are playing locally; they sometimes tour with Steve Martin (comedian, movie star, banjo player).
Scythian is a great dance band (along with Donna the Buffalo, have you herd of them?) also a frequent performer at MerleFest), but I don't recall sitting in a seat and listening to them. However, if either group is playing in the dance tent, I cannot pass it by. NB - that alone is a good reason for you to come to MerleFest next year.
Wayne Henderson is a world-famous luthier who crafts instruments for many of the world's greatest musicians, $$5 figures and up, and he's a darn good player too. He would have been my neighbor and patient if I were living and practicing medicine in NC/VA as originally planned.
Happy Traum (and his late brother Artie) were an important part of the New York City great folk revival back in the 1960's, when I was fortunate to be living there, so Happy is someone I have know and followed since I was a teenager. Therefore I have a personal attachment, especially to his stories of "back in the day" in Greenwich Village with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Ian & Sylvia, etc. He is also a great finger-picking style guitarist.
T Michael Coleman is usually a session musician and the historian of Doc & Merle's days of traveling the folk scene and I have loved his talks about those days. I don't think I have seen him do a solo gig, but I have heard he is very good.
Jay really likes Bill & the Belles, but I don't think I have heard them.
Peter Rowan, Jim Lauderdale, and Jerry Douglas usually have multiple sets at varied venues during the 4 days of MerleFest, and I always make sure to catch at least one or two of those sets.
