OK everybody, what do you want Santa to bring you?
Or what do people in your family, friends, neighborhood want?

I'll start. I want our new house to feel more Christmas-y and "ours," so I want all my traditional holiday decorations collected over the years. Nothing fancy, but they are Christmas to me. My long deceased grandmother made a plaster Santa that is a little chipped, but has stood the test of time. And all out tree decorations. So I leave at 6:13 am tomorrow to fly to SEA, then rent a car and drive 100 miles north to get them. Packthem in the U-Haul truck, and with roges' help, we'll drive them 3, 289 iles across country to North Carolina. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

(I'm confused about your location, but that's not unusual.) Several years ago, our paper ran a sort of contest for Christmas gifts. They begged people not to get all schmaltzy and wish for things like World Peace and a chicken-in-every-pot. Readers were supposed to wish for something tangible and selfish; the best wishes would be granted in a big feature to run just before Christmas. Naturally, it was a huge failure. They couldn't do their splashy column because hardly anybody wished for themselves. That's kind of sweet, when you think about it. I kicked myself because I'd considered asking for a set of elegant white china with which I could use all the odds and ends of serving pieces I have from two grandmothers. I bet I would have won! So, though your wish for your keepsakes and decorations is lovely, I'm not sure it's selfish enough. After all, you already own them, so it's just a matter of time and expense and a cross-country trip in December ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) C'mon girl, think! Ugg boots? I'm going to wish for more than one thing and they're all going to be self-indulgent. First: new TV with every hook-up I might possibly need for things I don't even know I might need. This TV must be 32" (our house is too small for the behemoths), have plasma/HD whatever, and work as a computer monitor. Most important, it must be chosen knowledgeably and then hooked up expertly with NO effort on my part. I challenge you all to think with the guilt-free avarice of a 6-yr-old writing to Santa.

I want a working source of fire in my living room, either a gas log for the non-working fireplace that would have to be patched with mortar or a gas-fired fake-wood-burning-stove. I'm trying to decide about this, whether to spend the money or wait until my boys are out of ¢o$$ege, heh heh. Mississippi gets surprising chilly in the winter, and my lukewarm air-blowing heater is just not cozy. My dream house always had a fireplace. Money is money, sure, but dreams are important too!!!
I also want some more electric outlets in the house.

We have a gas log fireplace in the living room, part of a purchased and installed fireplace with mantel. The house has two brick chimneys sticking out of the roof, but I guess the relevant fireplaces must have been covered up during the restoration. We have propane heat anyway, so the installer just ran another line for the fireplace. We also need more electrical outlets, guess it's part and parcel of older homes (eg, built before 1975). I want the Xmas decorations because that is what I miss most right now. I once saw some turquoise Ugg boots in a shoe store window that were pretty cool, and warm too, I'm sure. And I would like one of those Wii consoles with the Wii Fit add-on. I have read they are great for improving one's balance, which I sorely need. So is tai chi, but I think I need more involvement that a tape or DVD; the balance board thingie would do that for me. My location - I'm in Tampa, well really St. Petersburg, today, having flown in yesterday for the concert last night (CLT-EWR-TPA so I get more miles ;D). Tomorrow I go to SEA because that is a much better airfare. Unaccountably, the one way airfare when I bought it was much cheaper CLT-TPA-SEA than CLT-SEA alone. So I saved money by stopping here, and used points for the hotel. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) As long as we are talking Christmas gifts, mind if I ask one more question? I just got my last Secret Santa assignment this morning (just as I mailed off the first two). She is a veterinary student who loves to read and travel (kind of assumed for most on FlyerTalk), and loves puzzle books. Now that last one is easy for me, as I too love crossword puzzles, and I need to shop for one, as I am nearly done with the 150 in my current book. I don't know so much about what kind of books or items a veterinary student might need. Do y'all have any suggestions for her? Price limit is $35 - $50.

Books.
There are some I have asked for EVERY year for years, and still haven't got. (And it's not that I won't buy books for myself, I do, but these are sets that cost more than what I feel I 'should' spend on myself--not outrageous by any means, just...you know how it is.)
If I was really as good as I tell Santa, I'd ask for a laptop. It would be so nice to have one again since I'm writing so much each day, anywhere from 3-5,000 words.
A different winter coat, since I'm tired of the one I've worn for the last eight winters.
But none of these are things I NEED, and they ain't gonna happen; my family's idea on giving gifts is radically different from mine.

Gracie, do you live anywhere near a consignment shop? You might find a great "new" coat. As for books, the price wars on Amazon and Walmart might be worth watching, as they change very quickly. I bought the last 2 Harry Potter DVDs (my planned Christmas Day viewing while Jerry watches football ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ) and was going to round it out with Dylan's Christmas album for $6.25. But the price changed to $12 overnight - so I got to my free shipping total with "Once," which I missed when it was in town. With specials and getting over $25 (free s/h) I somehow ended up getting 3 DVDs for $22. I'm sure the same deals for book sets pop up and expire with similar rapidity. Boy, vet's books. An aunt and I shared a love for books on animals, and I inherited a raft of Gerald Durrell books about travel and animals. (See here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Durrell ) Also my all-time favorite animal book, "Ring of Bright Water," about a man who sort of accidentally lives for awhile with otters. Absolutely delightful.

Dahhlink's family has always done Christmas lists, and I fought it for years. I figured if you wanted to get a present for me, you should know me well enough to get something I'd like. It's Supposed to be a surprise, right? Well, I have finally given in. I'm not Good at it, but I make a list.
My Real Christmas List
lapel pins for suits (think Madline Albright) scarves stationery thank you cards colored jewelry (necklace+earrings glittery hair clips (no plastic) North Star slippers an autoharp case
Duncan's list includes empty TP rolls for his art projects, no doubt!

THIS was what I wanted. We decided, at work this year, to skip the big party and donate all its cost to the Beaman home, which is a local shelter/safehouse for battered women and children. In addition to the party costs, we also contributed toys, food, toiletries and other needs, and raised our own cash envelope as well....today they came to pick it all up, and took this picture for the paper. We were all so happy to do this. You know...there was no place like this when I needed one, so it's very dear to my heart. www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2046668&id=1442349645&l=2577dc487b (this is a public link so you should be able to see it.) For those of you who haven't seen me...guess which one is me!

So, I can wish for anything??? Tiny gold hoops (earrings) that I can sleep in - I had a pair once and I never took them out (until the "gold" started flaking off, that is). A new Liztech pin. I have several and I love them. An aluminum iced tea pitcher. My mom had one when we were growing up. My sister ended up with it. I'd like one, too. A new blender. The one I have is probably 30 years old and it doesn't really do smoothies (unless you like your smoothies more like chunkies). A yogurt maker. Maybe. This is one of those things that sounds really interesting, but would I really use it enough to justify the space it would take up in my cabinets? A new battery for my laptop. Mine works just fine, but I understand that you can get them so they last for more than a couple of hours. That would be fantastic. A new purse. I can't justify this, though, since I still have a perfectly decent one from last winter. Maybe next year. Gosh, that was easy. Maybe Santa will throw in a pony for good measure.

I want to move. Yes, I know I moved less than three years ago, but I'm ready again. I want to stay in GR, but I want an interesting urban condo downtown. Cheap.
I want a trip to NYC. I can be ready to leave in two hours.
I need (but it's not very interesting) new pots and pans. Mine are all scratched and dinged and icky.
Nothing wrong with emeralds.
A massive gift certificate to a local bookstore.
That's it. I'll send you my address when you get it all packaged.

Maybe if you chug some of Mike's wine, you'll like the yogurt.
I had a yogurt maker when they were the rage - maybe late 70s?The product was not something any person short of starvation would willingly put in her mouth. They may have improved the process considerably, but why take the chance? There are so many varieties of yogurt, even super cool Greek yogurt, which one can buy anywhere. (Personally, I like low-fat, loaded with fruit, kind of shamelessly self-indulgent yogurt.)

Is yogurt related to sourdough bread in some biological germ warfare sort of way?
All I want for Christmas is my own home Yogurt/Sourdough/Penicillin starter kit.
