This week on A Prairie Home Companion, we’ll travel back to January 13, 2007 to bring you a broadcast from the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. With this week’s special guests: a champion of American roots music and brilliant performer, Maria Muldaur; San Francisco’s female urban old-time teardown, The Stairwell Sisters; and joining the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band, the rainy-day man, Andy Stein. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, the News from Lake Wobegon, and much more. www.prairiehome.org/shows/57087.htmlIt's been a busy week in Tallahassee with the legislative session getting underway on Tuesday, which also was a day for a major storm event which caused tornado outbreak up here in the Panhandle and even down in Ft. Lauderdale. The political circus held forth its opening day in spite of the closure of all schools, local offices, and state agencies (except I suppose poor employees who had to show up to manage the circus. The Governor / Presidential Candidate was poised to march into the hallowed sanctum of Republican domination when all of the assembled members suddenly had to reach down to their phones as a mass "Tornado Warning" emergency alert rang out and the anxious guest speaker had to hold his position outside until it could be determined that it was not necessary to rush everyone into the bunker, or I suppose in this case to the downstairs cafeteria since it is below ground level. The storm pruned lots of limbs and pine cones and the top of a dead pine tree, which was fine considering the winds. But it also twisted and snapped a perfectly healthy tree which fell neatly amidst the other trees of our wooded side yard and well away from all fences and the house of course. God is good and also sometimes reminds us of his sense of humor.

About the guests:
It has been 50 years since Maria Muldaur released the classic “Midnight at the Oasis,” and she has toured the world extensively and released over 43 albums covering anything from jug band music and jazz to blues, roots, and gospel.
Violinist and saxophonist Andy Stein was a regular member of Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band on A Prairie Home Companion from 1989 to 2001. He collaborated with Garrison Keillor to create the opera Mr. and Mrs. Olson. He has appeared on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman, and has performed with such artists as Itzhak Perlman, Eric Clapton, Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, and many others.
The Stairwell Sisters: Evie Ladin, banjo and clogging; Lisa Berman, dobro, guitar and banjo; Stephanie Prausnitz, fiddle; Sue Sandlin, guitar, tiple and accordion; and Keith Terry, bass. San Francisco’s all-gal old-time teardown, THE STAIRWELL SISTERS, play a deep and rowdy repertoire of timeless tunes plus a solid standing of smart, original material that is winning praise on a national level. The Stairwell Sisters lay down concerts and square dances for counter-culturalists everywhere, infusing the old music with intoxicating energy and soul. The stairwell has never sounded better.

I’m glad you are OK despite the weather and the falling trees. A reminder to me that I should have an arborist come check all the trees in our back yard. They could be dangerous if they are blown over onto our house.
Looks like a good show, and I like Maria Muldaur. Jay and I saw her in North Carolina just a few years ago when she did a show in Asheville that was right after Storytelling. She was still great, really into “Bluesiana.”

Hi BoatBabe and DW!
Yup, real winter. We are not used to single digit temperatures, but it is warmer today. And noticeably lighter mornings and evenings, even if by only a few minutes. Things will get better!

Hmmm, Nancy Pelosi has a goal of negotiating drug prices with drug companies. I’ve heard this story before.

So does anyone out there have a favorite recipe for making lemon bars??? the kind where you have a custard type lemon filling over a shortbread style crust?

So does anyone out there have a favorite recipe for making lemon bars??? the kind where you have a custard type lemon filling over a shortbread style crust? I remember that I found a recipe like that on Taste of Home and downloaded it to my online Taste of Home recipe box. I’ll go disturb a bunch of electrons, see if I can find it on the PC. I think it would be a hopeless task here on the iPad. Oh - I think our temps today/tonight will be mid-30’s/mid-20’s, big improvement on those single digits temps.

OK, from Taste of Home its “Classic Lemon Bars” - uses 8” X 8” square baking dish at 350
Ingredients
Crust: 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup sugar 1 cup all-purpose flour
Filling: 3/4 cup sugar 2 large eggs 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tsp grated lemon zest 1/4 tsp baking powder confectioners’ sugar
Directions: 1. Preheat over to 350. In a small bowl, cream butter and sugar until light & fluffy, 5 - 7 minutes; gradually beat in flour until blended. 2. Press into an unversed 8-inch square baking dish. Bake for 15 - 20 minutes until edges are lightly browned. 3. For filling, in a small bowl, beat the sugar, eggs, lemon juice, flour, lemon zest and baking powder until frothy. Pour over crust. 4. Bake 10 - 15 minutes longer or until set and lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. Cut into squares.
I haven’t actually used this recipe but the pictures look really good and it seems simple. Plus I love lemon bars and always buy them when Dream Dinners has them on the menu ready-made. However they are expensive so I saw this recipe and saved it. I’ve overall had good luck with Taste of Home recipes and the user reviews were very favorable, emphasizing it’s important to use fresh lemon juice (well you need the zest anyway, right) and that they freeze well.
Freezing them would be irrelevant in our house - they’d be gone in a day or two.

Cooking at your house sounds much better than mine, except that I don’t eat fish or seafood of course. I’m not much of a cook and my husband is worse.

I’d say not so much gourmet but still very good and definitely much easier, especially when I had long days (and too often, nights). Now I have more time but still haven’t quite back into a kitchen routine.
Maria Muldaur sounds very good here. She was still well worth the admission when Jay and I saw her just a few years ago - probably shortly before the Big Shutdown.

A teaser for the upcoming Rhubarb skit:
Garrison Keillor: So you're in San Francisco in January. Not peak season, so you save some money, and you get an ocean view room at the Sheraton Stinson Beach (SURF, SEAGULLS) and the waiter brings the Honeymoon Lunch for Two ( FN: Shall I open the wine, sir? (CORKSCREW) -- and opens a bottle of wine, even though there's only one of you. (QUIET SOBBING) Jackie left you. This morning. On California Street. You rented a car at the airport and you came into the city (TRAFFIC) and you thought you knew a shortcut to the Golden Gate Bridge --

Pat sounded really good on “San Francisco Bay Blues.”
I haven’t been to SFO in ages - too long. When I was last in the area, I flew into San Jose and missed the rest of the Bay Area. I did get to Esalen in Big , so it was still a go, really worthwhile.
I’m ready for rhubarb.

I love hearing Pat sing again!
I had to go back to 2007 - 8 pages, and I wasn't there. Unusual. I can't compare what I had for dinner with what I'm making tonight: Gramma's special spaghetti sauce. Granddaughter has never eaten spaghetti sauce unless it was named Gramma's Special Sauce. She loves that.

I think Pat still performs, but mostly in the MSP area. Occasionally I’ll see him on a line-up somewhere, but never anywhere near me, or where I might be.

We won't get fresh rhubarb until spring here. Dang it! I was able to find places to buy rhubarb in our county, but not this time of year. It’s OK I’m not fond of rhubarb except for GK’s Rhubarb episodes. And thank goodness, no it is not the longest night of the year, that was 3 weeks ago!! Thank goodness. I have survived.
