Many special moments in A Prairie Home Companion’s history were created on the Grandstand stage at the Minnesota State Fair. This week, we revisit one of the 14 State Fair shows — a classic from August 30, 2014. Special guests: transcendent vocalist Aoife O’Donovan and the North Star State’s singing sisters Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Actors: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman. Pianist and musical director Richard Dworsky leads the band — Richard Kriehn on mandolin and fiddle; our horn section, Kenni Holmen, Michael B. Nelson, and Steve Strand; drummer JT Bates; bassist Jeff Carney; and guitarist Armand Hirsch. All that, plus Pronto Pups, prize-winning pies, the Mighty Midway, butter sculptures, fireworks, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. Join us now via this link or via social pages on Saturday night for a special show and discover Garrison’s love of one of the greatest rituals of summer, the State Fair! www.prairiehome.org/shows/40227.html

Aoife O’Donovan Appearing on A Prairie Home Companion over a dozen times, Grammy Award winner Aoife O’Donovan remains one of Garrison’s favorite duet partners. She is cofounder of the bands I’m With Her (with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz) and Crooked Still, and a featured vocalist on the recording The Goat Rodeo Sessions (Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile). Aoife’s latest album, The Age of Apathy, was nominated for a 2023 Grammy.
Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele Growing up in Indiana, Jearlyn Steele sang with her siblings as The Steele Children. One by one, they moved to Minnesota and started singing together again. Now music is the family business. Jearlyn also hosts Steele Talkin’, a Sunday-night radio show that originates on WCCO in Minneapolis. In the 1980s, Jevetta Steele — along with her family group, The Steeles — toured the world in the musical The Gospel at Colonus. The show had another successful run at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in 2010. And many remember Jevetta’s Academy Award-nominated performance of “Calling You,” from the film Baghdad Café.

I'm around this weekend and plan to be here, though our son is visiting so I'm not sure. He just got here so we haven't set the specifics yet.

Hi y'all. Welcome back!
How was the vacation DW? I know I always appreciate the cooler mountain air at least when it is hot in the flatlands.

We had a number of nice hikes to waterfalls, took a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway and looked out from the highest point (Richland Balsam). We went swimming in the resort pool a few times. We also took a trip to the Translvania Heritage Museum for a display they had about life in the Apalachians.

I haven't had a heat break yet. Made it up to KY for the Sizemore-Sheppard reunion last weekend of July, but it didn't help. It was still hot, and more rain than down here.

We also took a trip to the Translvania Heritage Museum for a display they had about life in the Apalachians. That sounds like a wonderful time. there's so many beautiful walks, hikes, views, streams/rivers/waterfalls/lakes in the Blue Ridge, and yes even swimming pools. It's why I loved going to summer camp there, and probably a major factor in why I think we will move back there.

We were going to swim in our favorite waterfall pool but this time of year it is crowded with families... so we decided to go to the pool which around 5 pm is devoid of kids!

And besides, there's plenty to do around here; I've not been this far behind in my hurricane prep before.

I briefly considered trying to find a little place to relocate to in Western NC, but decided I could not affort the income tax!

That is practically flatlands, under 1,000 feet, so not high enough to effect a lower temperature. Most places I've been, it can even be just a little too high to catch the breezes off the ocean/sea/bay.
The high areas of the Blue Ridge run to 5,000 - 6,000 feet and Mount Mitchell is nearly 6,700. Even at our house at 3,000 feet, I notice 10 - 15 degrees lower temp on a hot day than down by Winston-Salem.

The bulk of "real" Hurricane season is still before us. Supposedly the Atlantic and the Gulf are way above average temp which helps to support storm formation, but the African dust is helping keep that down, along with a lot of high pressure areas. So, who knows? But the last minute is too late to try getting it together.

//I briefly considered trying to find a little place to relocate to in Western NC, but decided I could not affort the income tax! //
NC doesn't tax Social Security income or inheritances and it does have a homestead exemption for those over 65 for property taxes for up to the first $25,000 of the valuation. Property taxes are low to begin with in NC, at least compared to WA, PA and WV, the last 3 states where we've owned homes. No state tax on groceries in NC either. Income other than SS and inheritance (IRA, 401k, pensions, savings and investments, etc) is subject to tax. I've been told that NC also follows the federal law regarding capital gains on sale of your primary home. We plan to sell our house before we or promptly after we move away from Washington State so we will pay no federal, WA or NC income tax on capital gains proceeds from the sale of our old house.
Federal income taxes on Social Security and other income are the same whatever state you live - income tax-free FL or WA, high tax like CA, or moderate tax states like NC.
For us, the NC income tax is well worth the trade-off because we will be closer to family and will have a much lower cost-of-living. WA has very high gas and utility bills; property and sales taxes are high too.

Jay have you been getting notices about GK's solo appearances and other current shows? He is doing an APHC 50th Anniversary Show Dec 9 in Town Hall in NYC. I doubt we'll be moved back to NC by then, but I'm thinking of attending a medical meeting in NC in early December then maybe taking the train to NYC afterward to see the show. "Since I'm back east anyway."
