Well it is Kentucky Derby Day, and I am sure folks are happy about that.. never saw the point of it myself. I'll post the show info and hope someone hangs out for a chat this week! Our featured show takes us back to May 7, 2011 where we performed at a palatial 1928 movie house, the Fox Theater in Detroit, Michigan. With special guests, fiery old-time string band Old Crow Medicine Show, fourth generation farmhouse fiddler Joel Mabus, and singer Andra Suchy. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting; Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon. www.prairiehome.org/shows/56583.htmlWhile singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Joel Mabus, who will be featured on tomorrow’s classic show, was growing up in Belleville, Illinois, his school pals were grooving to the Beach Boys; he was drawn to the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, and Jimmie Rodgers. Something in his lineage perhaps: His great-grandfather was a farmhouse fiddler, and during the Great Depression, his parents took their old-time music on the road throughout the Midwest. Now based in Michigan, Joel has spent the last four-plus decades keeping up the family tradition — playing clubs and festivals across North America. With a little luck and a whole lot of talent, Old Crow Medicine Show went from playing their slash-and-burn brand of old-time music on the streets of Boone, North Carolina, to bringing down the house at the Grand Ole Opry. Now based in Nashville, the band has wowed audiences coast to coast with their distinctive take on pre-World War II blues, rags, hollers, fiddle tunes and jug band numbers. The lineup for this show: Willie Watson (guitar), Ketch Secor (fiddle), Gill Landry (banjo, guitar), Kevin Hayes (guitjo), Cory Younts (mandolin), and Morgan Jahnig (bass). Old Crow’s latest recordings include the 2022 release Paint This Town.” Old Crow will be featured on Saturday's classic A Prairie Home Companion show. Long before Darius Rucker had a hit with “Wagon Wheel,” fans of A Prairie Home Companion instantly recognized the tune. Ketch Secor and the Old Crow gang sang the song on APHC on a few occasions, including during the show’s 40th Anniversary Festival and on the cinecast, where Prairie Home was beamed into 500-plus theaters across the country. “Wagon Wheel” was initially a chorus that Bob Dylan wrote, and Ketch somehow found it and took it upon himself to finish the song. The result was this incredibly catchy tune. Years later, Dylan heard the song and must have been impressed since he sent another unfinished tune for Ketch to finish, and the resulting tune popped up on APHC as “Sweet Amarillo.” Andra Suchy spent her childhood on a farm near Mandan, North Dakota, the daughter of two talented singers. By the time she was in grade school, she was performing in concerts and festivals with her family. These days she sings with several groups in the Twin Cities area, including the all-girl trio The Dollys. She also works as a back-up singer and as a jingle singer on commercials for White Castle, Target, and others.

This is how JAY described this show!
May 7, 2011 at 9:38am QuotelikePost OptionsPost by jspnrvr on May 7, 2011 at 9:38am Oooh! Oooh! Howdy Do! This will be quick 'cuz I have errands to run.
If there is life and breath in your body, and you can raise one feeble, trembling hand for the very last time, you'd better tune in tonight. Coming live from the Fox Theater in DEEtroit, Michigan, (Yo! Jane!), it's Old Crow Medicine show and another new (to me, anyway) act. You know, thirty years to become an "overnight" sensation? Well this guy has been around for years and I'll have an overnight discovery. Joel Mabus, folksinger and storyteller, acoustic wizard, from a long line of downstate Illinois farmhouse fiddlers. This is how the traditions stay alive. I'm so excited about this guy I'm 'bout to have an incontinent episode, right down my leg.
We'll have Rich and the GASS, we'll have RA!RA! (It's Mother's Day Weekend! We can't help but hear from Mom!) The News! If you're still too cold this show will warm you up; if you're overheated this show will chill you out. We're all going to wind up like Baby Bear's Soup: Juuust Right! See you on the Radio!

Hi y'all. Right now I got the split screen 'cause I gotta watch the Kentucky Derby - it's a family tradition.
I saw Old Crow Medicine Show last Friday at MerleFest and was disappointed - they've gone all Hollywood and scripted, not at all sincere, even though they had some great new tunes from their latest album "Paint That Town." I didn't even have to leave early to avoid the traffic because I had scored that Green Lot parking decal from the guy in the Burger King parking lot. OCMS have forgotten their roots, and how Doc Watson found them busking in Boone and got them onto the national stage.
Much different than the first time I saw them at MerleFest, which was probably around 2011, same time frame as this show, when thy were TERRIFIC! I left early, didn't stick around for "Wagon Wheel" if they did it.

Hey, doc. That's too bad about OCMS. I think Nitty Gritty is still doing pretty well. They have a new album out, and had the Larkin Poe singing backup on part of it.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was wonderful on Sunday afternoon - set the perfect tone. They only got through about three-fourths of their show when it was temporarily suspended due to thunderstorm with lightning. Due to the delay, when the show re-started they went straight to the closing act which was Emmy Lou Harris, also great as always - we saw her last summer also when she did a show with Brandi Carlile at The Gorge.

Yeah, it's been 11 years. Lots of ups and down. EVERYTIME I want to complain about something about Tallahassee or Florida, I have to take a breathe and remember that other folks have had it much worse!! Including those poor folks in the Ukraine..

Hey Doc, what does it mean that they went "scripted" ??
The lead singer was reciting an annoying patter by rote with several mispronunciations ("Wilkesberry" instead of "Wilkesborough" and silly jokes about people "rolling down the mountain" from Hickory or some other town into Wilkesborough, when they are already foothills towns.

OMG!! Huge upset as Rich Strike wins against 80 - 1 odds. He wasn't even in the race until yesterday, He was the 21 horse, and the 20 horse was scratched so 21 got in. Incredible.

Well, good. I always enjoy it when things don't go according to expectations at the big races.

Yes, a real rags to riches story, as far as the horse racing equivalent. First Derby win for the trainer and the jockey. Plus everything at the Derby looked "back to normal" - full crowd, the traditional crowd, the singing of the state song "My Old Kentucky Home."
And those who put a few bucks on the long shot cleaned up.

Well, good. I always enjoy it when things don't go according to expectations at the big races. Does sort of remind you that on any given day, any horse (or team) can win a race (or a game).

Any professional athlete - human or horse - is already elite, so yup "Any given day."
I watched the re-run with all the arrows and of course #21 started way out on the outside and was way in the back at the start, then worked his way to the inside rail and just ran right on past the favorites who were in the lead. That jockey rode an amazing race. Very impressive.
