Back in 1997 when I was touring as lighting designer for A Prairie Home Companion, we did a show in Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park (Not to be confused with Jellystone Park where the Flintstones would vacation). The home of "Old Faithful" the Geyser, not the Host of PHC. We stayed at their beautiful lodge where they had a room big enough to have a nice size audience. Now in those days to get the broadcast to Public Radio Stations all over the country, so well over 4 Million listeners could tune in every Saturday Night to hear the the show, we used a Huge Uplink Satellite Dish to send the radio waves up into the ether so it could be beamed down to stations across the country. Now for those of you who have not had the pleasure of visiting Yellowstone National Park, Buffalo have right of passage to freely roam through the Park. Many using the Hot Geysers to keep warm in the winter. Well right before we were ready to go "On the Air," Brian Killian, our Technical Engineer, came inside the theater to inform us that a huge Buffalo had walked over to where the Satellite Dish was parked and laid down right next to the dish. We assumed he was a big fan of the show, but more likely he was just looking for a place in the shade to relax. Of course we had concern that he might accidentally damage the Satellite Dish and take us completely off the air...but as it turned out, he just wanted to hear the show. The interesting part of this story was when Garrison finished "The News" from his hometown, the Buffalo got up and did what Buffalo do in Yellowstone...he went Roaming. ---Alan Frechtman Live from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, with Skip Gorman, Kate MacKenzie, Robin and Linda Williams, and Pat Williams. www.prairiehome.org/shows/58241.html

Tonight's classic Prairie Home show comes to you from . . . Fred Farrell, the name to trust for all your animal call needs. (JUNGLE MONKEYS, BIRDS) TR: This is Fred Farrell. Yellowstone Park is a wonderful place to visit and bring the kiddoes and stay in a hotel and eat decent food and not have to sleep in a sleeping bag on top of a tree root and live on burnt wieners, but even so, you have to be careful about things like elk. (ELK) Elk weigh about four hundred pounds and they have a brain the size of a Jujube and (ELK) very poor eyesight, and this is a very lonely animal (ELK), so during the summer the male elk can get in a romantic mood. (ELK) And this is a guy who believes in going all the way on the first date. There are two ways to defend against elk --- and the first one is time-consuming and requires you to drink a lot of liquids. The best way is to get one of my Fred Farrell Elk Calls ---- this call can be heard for miles (ELK CALL), and it says: My name is Big Al and I got here first and anybody who messes with me is dog food. You get up and blow this (ELK CALL) a few times during the night and you'll never have a problem with elk. Then, there's bison. A bison looks like it's slow unless it gets upset (SNORT, PAWING) and then it gets fast very quick, and so you need a bison call to put the big guy at rest. This one says, "O Great Bison, Truly You Are The Master of Creation" (SNORTS) and this one says, "Like your hair that way ---- did you put bison on it, or did you use moose?" (SNORTS) It's an old bison joke. Gets em everytime. (BISON CHUCKLE) GK: Order now and get absolutely free, our Eight In One Animal Calls, eight calls for the price of one, including cricket (SFX), crocodile (SFX), Clydesdale (SFX), cockatoo (SFX), cougar (SFX), corgi (SFX), Cornish game hen (SFX), and crow (SFX). Fred Farrell, the name to trust when it comes to animal calls. (JUNGLE MEDLEY)

Interesting how "camp songs" have different lyrics depening on the region or the time...

My mother maybe had a CB, I never did.
You can tell this is 1997 by the mention of "Princess of Wales." This was July 1997, she died in late August or early September. We were in Paris on the one-year anniversary and the kids were interviewed for French radio when we happened to walk past the site of her accident.

I've been multi-tasking because I just saw my pre-employment "immunity panel" and ti says I'm positive for Hepatitis A, which is the infectious kind - usually food related - but I've been right here at home for the past 3 months, no contact with patients, and I haven't been sick. Furthermore, I had my annual physical exam and my "regular lab tests" done the same day and I do not have hepatitis or any other surprise ailments. My liver is fine!
Weird, I wonder if I will not start work after all.

I went to see Old Faithful as a youth... don't recall much about it... may need to make a return trip. I understand many National Parks are overrun this Summer and are requiring reservations just to get in. Glad so many Americans are finally paying attention to our national natural treasures, but wondering if it will lead to increased funding and appropriate protective measures being taken.

I would think it has to be. The test does not usually become positive until several days into the illness, so it's not like I am incubating a case from recent exposure (which I haven't had) And just an aside, most docs wouldn't check Hep A immunity unless a person was ill or known to be exposed. It's not usually asymptomatic, and it resolves without treatment.

He always does this "America the Beautiful" at his sing-alongs, but he never includes my favorite verse - "Oh beautiful for pilgrims' feet, whose stern impassioned stress..."

I wonder what happened to Jay? Maybe he dropped out for one of his dulcimer shows? I get emotional when I hear this now, because I think are are on our way to a failed state. A republic, but we can't keep it.
