This week: We flee the biting winds of the northern plains for the sunshine of the Golden State and our first live broadcast of 2016, at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, California. A splendid opera house indeed, but even more so when soprano Ellie Dehn fills the air with song and elegance. Making their debut on our show is the acoustic sister trio Joseph and their majestic sibling harmony. And fave Heather Masse crosses the country to perform duets with the host and add a "Nor'east" presence to a script or two. Rounding out the roster is our Royal Academy of Radio Actors, Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman with their cache of characters and sound effects; pianist and music director Rich Dworsky leads the band of Richard Kriehn (mandolin and fiddle), Chris Siebold (guitar, both lead and rhythm), Bernie Dresel (drums), and Larry Kohut (bass). The host has the latest News from Lake Wobegon, where it's finally cold enough to drive your car onto the lake for ice fishing, schnapps, and solace. Slide your computer to the address below and pretend it is on the public radio end of the dial and we'll see you on Saturday evening! www.prairiehome.org/shows/50829.html

I never went to the Opera House while we were there, but I did hear Opera, including Luciano Paveratti and Montserrat Caballe, out in Golden Gate Park.

While I remember less each day, I am fairly certain I have never gone to an opera performance anywhere. I have heard opera type songs at musical performances done one at a time but never set down for a whole show in another language ...

Don't know many opera singers, much less one born in Minnesota! Wonder if singing opera is a way to stay warm in the winters up there?

While I remember less each day, I am fairly certain I have never gone to an opera performance anywhere. I have heard opera type songs at musical performances done one at a time but never set down for a whole show in another language ... Opera in the Park was sort of a present to the town. It was a tradition that the performer(s) who opened the Season always came out and put on a free concert in Golden Gate Park. It was Labor Day weekend, so a good crowd. People on blankets with their baskets and coolers. There was a competition for Best Picnic. I got dropped off early with all the stuff to secure a good spot. I was right next to a group from the District Attorney's office who had their Coleman stove and were doing eggs Benedict and Bloody Marys for a breakfast. It was also the season opener for the 49'ers, the first one after their Super Bowl win the previous season. So a lot of portable TV's, watching football, listening to opera, lots of adult beverages. It was a good day.

Hi y'all.
I think I remember that Super Bowl if it was the one where the 49ers beat the Broncos 55 - 10, biggest margin in Super Bowl history. We went to that one, in New Orleans. I was so sure the Broncos would win. because we were there.

Our younger grand daughter has a birthday coming up this week, so very important. When I lived in Germany with my aunt and uncle we went to the opera often - my uncle was an opera singer. However, everyone in my class at school also went to the opera for each premiere. It was an expected part of the curriculum and we would discuss it the next day in school. There was a panel above the stage with all the lyrics translated - from Italian into German so we could understand.

Well, have to admit that the 49ers were good sports. Our seats happened to be in a section of the Super Dome occupied mainly by 49ers fans and we were of course attired at The Edge of Orange, but we survived.
Chef Paul Prudhomme sat right behind us.
NOLA on my mind, as I am ordering a King Cake for my granddaughter's birthday.

According to Google, two of the three sisters are twins. I wonder if that makes the harmony easier or harder?

It's February 16 this year, but significantly limited - parades are cancelled. I don't know what restrictions, if any, there are on parties, restaurants, all the other festivities. The grand balls held by the Krewes have always been a big deal but I don't think they can have those.

NOLA on my mind, as I am ordering a King Cake for my granddaughter's birthday. Apparently sales of King Cake are going well this year, considering for many it may be the only celebration possible... but take a look at this quote: A king cake in Louisiana used to be a simple dessert: a ring of brioche topped with purple, green and gold, the colors of Carnival. In recent years, it has mutated into ever dizzying variations, such as cakes filled with cream cheese, stuffed with berries or smeared with praline goo. The King Cake Hub sells more than 60 varieties. It's madness. It's through the roof," she said. "Thank God for king cake season." For the first time, Conrad is shipping her king cakes, which come in flavors like apple, cheesecake and even crawfish. On Monday, she shipped out 200 cakes and sold more than 300 from the store. Last year, she averaged 250 to 300 cakes per day. "People can't travel to New Orleans. This is the one thing people can do for carnival," Conrad said. Now what would a crawfish flavor king cake even be like??

I was in NOLA for the first Mardi Gras after Katrina. It was the nicest I'd ever been to. There were very few tourists, crowds were small, and many people obviously hadn't seen each other since August 2005.
New Orleanians tend to view the parades from the same place each year, gathering with family, friends and neighbors, usually along St. Charles. They were all so glad to be safe and together again.
One of my high school classmates has a big home on the parade route and we all have standing invitations for parade viewing...

I don't know about crawfish king cake.
I'm ordering a traditional one with a "Happy Birthday" banner along with beads, doubloons, feather boas and masks. I order from Gambino's Bakery most every year, usually have them delivered to my work place so my colleagues can have a little taste of New Orleans.
You do have to warn everyone about the baby though, since they aren't from Louisiana, they don't know any better.

This show really did feature lots of connections to the Opera House... I think the Opera House is on the National Historic Register. It's exceptional, and not that many US cities heave Opera Houses. Though I must point out that Prescott, Arizona sure does! The historic Elks Opera House, where I saw a number of great performers when we lived in AZ - Ian Tyson, John McCutcheon...
