I guess we would have the North American Roges Center.

Kirby could do the sound effects.
Right now Jewel appears to be sleeping, but there's a new (to me) sound, much like a woodpecker. Some unusual snoring? It really is a distinct rat-a-tat-tat.

I guess we would have the North American Roges Center. A study in intellectual cynicism? Essays on historically prominent cynics, and the Importance of cynicism in experimental society. The Cynics rights and preservation society. It would be about as popular as saving wolves. Just to reinforce my point I must say. I don't think N America is ready for that. After all we still have half a continent to destroy and that will take a lot of positive energy.

Kirby is great with the "Paranoid Bird Sounds of the Australian Bush" The comforting sounds of hibernation? Not so much.

Yes, I've heard a woodpecker during the day. That and lots of airplanes, maybe snowmobiles as one was so loud and so close.

Poor Jewel. Those are the noisiest babies in all of the Animal Kingdom.

Yes, I'll bet Kirby is not at all impressed with those little screamers.

I get mesmerized by that site and the videos. Youtube has a number of the whole clan - I loved watching them put down a ladder for June's half-grown cubs when they got stuck in a construction site.
And yes - two months! No wonder they're so little when they're born.

Well, I couldn't take that constant squalling. She's a better mother than I am; I'd drop them off at the convent with a basket and a note and trundle back to the cave.

Well, bummer. What do you bet this generates a lot of donations so they can get a less restrictive grant? Who would make such a rule for Lynn Rogers? It's not as if he's some wildly irresponsible grad student trying to make a name for himself - he already IS the name.
Plenty of other bears in the clan though. We'll just have to space out our viewing of the other vids. I wonder how big the babies will be when we see them after a week.

Apparently they got some sort of dispensation and were able to fix Jewel's camera. She's back online, still being pestered by those noisy cubs and still scratching. Has anyone seen mention of her itchiness? I worry about her. Maybe she has fleas or needs a good moisturizer. www.bear.org/livecams/jewel-den-cam.php

That's great to hear!
I've got company, so haven't been able to keep track like I usually do.
Good Job, guys!

I went to the den for the first time last evening. I hadn't visited before because I was close to my data limit last month. Jewels stretched out and there were two little bears groveling and whining and looking like a couple of sparsely haired 90 year olds in a rest home.

You click on and download Jewel's den camera, right, doc? Yeah, then there is an ad, and then a round black shadowy thing with some occasional squeaks and squawks, maybe some snoring. The shadows sometimes move a bit.

You're looking at Jewel, trying valiantly to catch some Zzzz's. It really is just a matter of luck whether you see something happening, although the sound effects are pretty frequent. I've seen Jewel do a lot of scratching and sometimes she thrusts her head out of the den with the most forlorn and weary expression, as if she's begging for a babysitter. (Of course, I could be anthropomorphizing here a bit. That's sure how I would feel in her place.) My favorite candid moment was when one of the cubs had been squawking and she was rooting around under herself, probably trying to aim him toward the milk. He kept squawking and suddenly she raised her head with the cub in her mouth. I swear she was seriously considering hurling him right out of the den, but maternal instinct prevailed.
On that same page you'll see 'research notes' that will take you to more pics and youtube videos. That's where they've done some film editing for you and more action is compressed into a shorter period of time.

I think I can make them out in the last minute or so, but it's still tough sorting out babies and Jewel's paws. Have you ever been able to enlarge the screen? I just get colored lines. Too many pixels? I hate missing anything. Sometimes I see what appear to be two little eyes looking right at the camera, but maybe that's just snow or straw on Jewel's coat.

I just got colored lines when I tried to enlarge the screen, too. When my son was here, he just tapped the mouse screen and got it to enlarge only a little. I can't tell you how he did that, or how to do it if you aren't on a laptop and have a real mouse.
The detritus on Jewel's coat is the rotten log she used for bedding. Sometimes she does a dog shake, and it all falls off. I, too, have seen what I think are little glowing eyes, but I don't think their eyes are open yet?
I don't know. I like to watch the synopsis films, because lots of times there is nothing happening on the live screen, and I don't have a lot of time to watch. Even this morning, I heard baby screams but Jewel was not moving.

If I'm going to be around a while, I leave Jewel's window live and do other things till I hear something that might mean activity. But often it's just screaming and squawking from under Jewel, who is getting pretty imperturbable. I'm probably anthropomorpizing shamelessly, but it seems to me she's gotten more used to the motherhood schtick and just sleeps through their drama. I also like chceking in on the other dens. The story of Honey and Lucky is so mysterious - what is their mutual attraction/antipathy? Is Honey a cougar?

I had stopped watching this live feed, so it's really cool to come back in and seen how much the cubs have grown.
The Screamer seems to have settled down to The Whiner.

It's been a while since I checked in on Jewel and her babies, Fern and Herbie. Here they are: [/img] If you start about in the middle you can see Jewel's upturned snout. Below that are two blobs of reddish brown fur - the cubs enjoying their lunch.
